Of course there were many great records and albums made post 1996, but just a few months into 1997 you can see how much the quality of music changed, and not for the better. Many of the songs played on this show were good to great, but just in general terms, things changed rapidly. Even starting in 96 there were signs of the impending downward trend. 95 was the last great year. I would say that by 89 I was fully in love with Hip Hop. Having an older brother helped because even as young as 8 or 9 years old in 87/88 I was already listening to anything he was playing, but by 89 I was listening on my own tapes and selecting the songs I thought were the best. I mention that to say that by 1997 when I was in college, I couldn't believe even then in real time how Hip Hop had transformed. Especially considering the quickness with which it did. 97 was that dividing line for me and this set here represents that feeling to me perfectly. I listened to it on the train this morning and it really made me feel uneasy lol. Music has a powerful grip on our emotions.

I never listened much to the Hot 97 shows, but I would never have believed if someone told me Agent Orange was played there. Sounded like I thought. Every other word blanked out.
