I don't think it's that inaccurate to say that Korra had effectively died from the poison. By the end it was purely the Avatar State keeping her going.

I am just going to interject that there can be more than one earthly tether, what Zaheer mastered was what one release of an earthly tether gave him. The earthly tether that was released, that gave him the ability to fly, is his fear of dying. What is so hard about this tether is only losing the thing that you love most. For Tenzin to lose his earthly tether where he could fly, he would have to lose his family. The other earthly tethers are more nebulous. Zaheer lost to his earthly tether to Korra, the cyclone had nearly nothing to do with him escaping. The cyclone was bringing Korra back, if Zaheer had just let Korra fall, he would have fled no problem. That he had to lift Korra out of the cyclone was the weight that brought him back down to earth. The symbolism of his earthly tether returning was the chain coming up from nowhere to grab his ankle is indicating that even if he can fly he is still imprisoned by his earthly tether which is now Korra.

It’s interesting that Seasons 1-3 villains intended to challenge Korra’s identity as the avatar: taking away her bending, destroying her past lives, and attempting to stop the avatar cycle.

The poison is not designed specifically to induce the avatar state, it’s just meant to kill her. The avatar state kicks in as a defense mechanism to fight the poison. I thinks it’s just mercury, but not too sure

I actually think this is the perfect kids show. For me a kids show introduces adult themes with a real edge but still manages to keep the child in a safe environment. Think about original fairy tales. They were dark, cruel, and mean. The world at the time was dark, cruel, and mean. Kids needed to have a safe place to learn and process that emotional realization. If you wait till 18 to introduce political problems, bad motives, and death, then you would be unequipped to deal with life.

Oh god this finale is always so hard for me to watch. It just beats Korra down and breaks her and that tear at the end marks her realization that she’s basically being replaced by the new air nation.

I love that despite how many times I've watched this show, or how many reactions I've seen I still manage to be surprised by new interpretations and the different views I hadn't even thought of. I loved the breakdown you guys did for the first question, it redoubles my excitement to watch the next season and if I view any moments in a new light thanks to this new input. And thank you, so many people don't appreciate the fact that all of Korras enemies have to be at the peak of their given bending abilities and they have to blindside Korra with a premeditated plan so they can catch her off guard and have the advantage.

I feel like LOK can only be really appreciated if you actually take the time to think about it as you guys do. There are so many complex hidden&obvious themes going on and they are often overlooked or painted as bad and it's not the fairest assessment lol

I think it’s good to note how it’s not a kids show but I think it’s sooooo important to take note of the trauma she’s experienced this season and then more importantly what she is going to have going forward to just exist in the world. Not even as the avatar, but as a person with family and friends. I think this was put more in the 14-17 Nick kids show area, and I think it’s super important for kids to see the struggle and see the road forward, whatever that may be. Definitely puts a light on mental health which is not discussed nearly enough, especially in the US. Such a great analysis Montana, thank you for that. And thanks y’all for all the likes on my question, didn’t realize how much love that got ❤️❤️❤️

If room temperature then yes, but given that water benders can change water temp (ice and steam bending) it’s possible it’s another metal as there are a few that are liquid just above room temp and all the metal benders would have to do is heat the metal a bit to melt it

The metal poison is mercury right? If so, then Korra is going to not only suffering from situation-induced posttraumatic stress but also devastating neurological and muscular system damage. Clinical depression and other mental health conditions are also exacerbated by mercury in the system. Season 4 is gonna be nuts!
