QSound! (CPS1.5 beta 2)
🕑 Added 2020-11-20 16:31:00 +0000 UTCIt's taken about 6 weeks of development but the DSP16A chip is now part of our FPGA family. This is the heart of QSound. Yes, we now have QSound, the sound system of CPS2, ready.
So here it is the second beta release of CPS 1.5, introducing QSound. There is still work to do but the experience is way better with the awesome sound effects of these games. Some notes:
1. You need the file qsound.zip to get the sound to play. Place it with the rest of your MAME roms if you use MiSTer.
2. QSound output is triggering artefacts in the digital-to-analogue converters of both MiST and MiSTer. The artefacts are much worse in MiST and can be heard when music stops. In MiSTer it seems to be a noise here and there. This may not occur in the HDMI sound output of MiSTer. I have not tried it yet.
3. NVRAM contents don't get saved so DIP settings do not persist after power down or swapping games. DIP settings are changed via OSD menu by selecting "test" after the game has started.
4. FPGA timings are not clean yet so for a small number of people, games may crash or show strange behaviour.
5. The pause screen is just a place holder for now. It will be ready for next update.
6. All CPS 1.5 original games should work correctly with music.

I am sorry you are having troubles. This setup isn't different from a general arcade core setup in MiST(er). Please join our Discord server if you need help at a step of the process. Normally other users can help you more quickly than I can.

I had the same issue and adding the dl-1425.bin file to my qsound.zip fixed it. I have a bit of "static" via HDMI sound but I expect it since this is beta. Thanks all!

I am sorry the setup can be frustrating. MiSTer isn’t great at telling you why it cannot find a ROM and where it is looking for it. Try this: Move the zips to games/mame. That worked for me and reportedly for other users too.

I had the same problem. Am using HDMI output. Turns out my qsound.zip was the older variant that contained qsound.bin instead of dl-1425.bin. What I did was find a qsound_hle.zip file for mame which does contain dl-1425.bin with the right checksum. Renamed that to qsound.zip, put it in my mame roms folder on the mister and now it works!

I figured out what I was doing wrong, it was simply down to the file location. I was copying the qsound.zip to \_Arcade\mame instead of \games\mame. It has been a while since I've updated the MiSTer and I'd forgotten about this change in directory structure. Thank you GeorgeSpinner for your assistance.

Does your qsound.zip contain dl-1425.bin and does it have a CRC32 value of d6cf5ef5? Is the qsound.zip in the same folder as your CPS roms? Are you using HDMI sound output or the audio jack?

I am using qsound.zip from the .226 MAME set and have a matching CRC of D6CF5EF5. The only file in the qsound archive is dl-1245.bin, based on the comments above this should work... Unfortunately for me it doesn't, no idea why, this isn't a complaint, but if anyone has ideas please let me know.

Dear Santa Jotego, I have been a very good boy this year and obeyed COVID-19 regulations in my country. Working hard to feed my wife and children and ensure that my friends and wider family are safe and well throughout 2020. This is an FGPA recreation, not high-level emulation. Regular qsound.zip from the most recent MAME set (0.226) works just fine. Actually, for many versions of MAME, both qsound.zip and qsound_hle.zip have only one file inside (dl-1425.bin, CRC=D6CF5EF5).

You have to get qsound_hle.zip (https://edgeemu.net/down.php?id=190664) which contains dl-1425.bin. You might be able to just rename qsound_hle.zip to qsound.zip, but I extracted dl-1425.bin from qsound_hle.zip and added it to the qsound.zip archive. I got sound after I did that.

I'm a little confused too. I have qsound.zip in the mame directory, but I don't get any sound. I've tried qsound.zip from multiple sources. I feel like I'm probably doing something obviously wrong.

I have tried 2 slammast.zip and both fail after 1 match (win or lose). They are 2 Kbytes different in size. both of them fail after 1 match. the smaller says "Illegal Instruction" and a bunch of sets of numbers appear on the screen. the larger just hangs. Anyone else having trouble with Slammasters?

Can I put qsound.zip and dl-1425.bin together in the Games/Mame folder? Or do I have to unzip qsound.zip, merge it into the same folder as the dl-1425.bin file, and then compress it with qsound.zip again?
