I researched some prices on basic dried food, and found a 2.2 pound #10 can of the dried onions at the Mormon (provident pantry) food outlet for $7.50. Most people don't know about this but they will sell to whomever would like to shop there. They don't have a large variety, just basics, but the quality is very good and the prices can't be beat. Excellent discussion of some of these "imported" basics that we will not have access to if things get tough.
I've stashed about a 5 gallon bucket worth of whole peppercorns. All of my preps are considered an investment in my future and my family should the need arise for any of them.
