My dad asked (and gently pushed) for me to get teeth whitening. I not so gently told him to stop. My dentist said healthy teeth are not naturally white BUT the procedure is free. "It's free so take it" has been a bigger internal issue in my life than most others. Also, I'm black living in japan, meaning I will always be Other, always outside the Standard. I take solace in the fact I don't have to run that race. But, I'm running other races.

i actually prefer when people don't have perfect teeth (if it doesn't affect their oral health). i have a "gummy smile" and thought about getting a surgery in my early 20's to "correct" it - but i came to the realization that my current smile is literally part of who i am and i really just wanted to embrace it. it took a bit of time, but now i have no problem smiling in photos... even if my gums are showing!
