You flick a cigarette to the ground, and step, exhaling the last wisps of smoke in a long breath.
Why did it have to be this town, this school. Literally any other place would be better.
Jackie and Case, the other two hunters on your team, are up ahead a bit. Case is looking at the abandoned school through a small pair of binoculars.
“Done yet Morgan? Gonna have time to help out, or you too busy moping?”
“Oh shut up Jackie. If we had an incursion in your mom’s old house you’d be kinda bummed about it to.”
She grins.
“I dunno I like to think I’d relish the chance to smash the place up a little. You’re so fuckin grim all the time bud, cut lose a little.”
You light another cigarette.
“Yeah, well.”
Case lowers the binoculars.
“Don’t push him Jackie. I trust him to do his job.”
Jackie frowns and takes off her sunglasses, finally. It’s 2 am.
“I know he’ll do his job. Just trying to lighten the mood a little, jeez.”
“I’m sure the mood will be much improved when and if we all live through the night.”
You walk over to them, eyes on the school’s back entrance.
“Let’s just get this over with.”
Jackie slaps your shoulder and runs ahead.
“You got it boss!”
Case watches her and sighs.
“We better go before something bites back.”
You look over at her, long hair pinned up carefully. Why does she keep it so long if she never lets it down, anyway. You squint.
“Better hurry then.”
There’s a demon in this building. A (C-) rated existential threat, so nothing special. Still, demons are good at what they do, which is staying alive until they become a bigger problem. Like how a couple bugs become an infestation.
Once you get the door open, the three of you split up. Case is off to the cafeteria and staff offices, Jackie to the library and courtyard, you to the second floor classrooms. The classrooms are a bit confusing to navigate, so your past experience gives you a leg up.
You pass the trophy case, and catch your dim reflection off a old plaque. You haven’t shaved today. You let out an annoyed noise and stamp away.
The school’s been shut down for, what, eight years? Ten? The year after you dropped out, this school district and another tiny one voted to merge, consolidate students, and sell off the extra properties. The area population had been shrinking for a while, and they figured they could at least make a little money off it. Turns out businesses don’t jump to make big land purchases in crumbling towns that people can’t wait to leave. No one bought the high school, and now it’s just rotting.
Leave land fallow long enough, and something will grow.
The emergency lights are on. They definitely shouldn’t be. It bathes the hallways in an eerie sort of half-light, shadows cast by lockers curving off dropped ceiling tiles. You move carefully, trying not to make much noise. Your earpiece buzzes.
“Hey y’all. I got movement over in the reference section.”
You talk low.
“Should we rendezvous?”
“Naw, I got eyes on it. It’s no demon- some low level familiar. Looks like it’s eating a book about the grecco-roman statuary tradition.”
“How bland,” Case muses.
“A C minus with a familiar? Looks like it was about to earn a promotion,” you respond.
“Careful with it Jackie. Once you engage, the demon will know we’re here, so try to wait for more information.”
“Shit, fuck, it saw me. I’m going for it.”
“Careful!” you spit into the receiver. Something about her carefree attitude irks you sometimes.
You keep down the hallway, watching for any movement. You push open an unlocked room, and sweep it carefully. Nothing.
It’s not her fault. Jackie’s an expert. You’ve worked together for years, and you care about her a lot. You’re just in a foul mood because of the scenery.
Stupid fuckin science room. You look over the long counters with their worn black tops, trying to push down a bad fuckin day from a lotta years ago.
Stopping, you rest your hand on the counter you used to sit at. Frowning.
“Morgan!”
You jerk out of your reverie, scanning the room again.
“What’s up Jackie?”
“I killed it, but something’s weird here, man.”
You catch movement on the the window. Just branches in the breeze.
“What’s weird?”
“There’s a couple more. They haven’t attacked me yet. Just kinda watching.”
You knit your brows together.
“More familiars? That’s. Unusual.”
“Yeah, I dunno. The first one wasn’t tough at all, but the cavalry is throwing off my groove.”
“There shouldn’t be one familiar with a C minus, let alone three. Case, let’s meet back up and get to the library.”
“Afraid I can’t, Morgan,” he says calmly.
“Why not?”
“I’m in the principal’s office.”
“That a joke?”
“There are four additional familiars watching the door. I’m not sure where they came from.”
“What the fuck,” you mutter.
“The hell’s with our intel? You sure they said this is a C and not like, a B? They sound pretty close when you say them out loud fast,” Jackie announces.
“They don’t send one team to deal with a B. This is a trash tier mob that’s getting uppity. I don’t care how many low quality shades it can spit out, it dies here. Hole up in the office, Case. I’m gonna get Jackie and we’ll head over.”
“Rodger that, I’ll just keep staring at them menacingly till you get here boss.”
“Ditto.”
You grit your teeth. Seems there will be no time for reminiscing. What a shame.
“Goddamn C minus.”
“C minus yourself. Honestly.”
Behind you.
You close your eyes for a second and mouth ‘fuck’ silently. Then you turn around.
It’s sitting on the front desk, kicking it’s feet playfully. Dressed in a half unbuttoned dress shirt and black pants. It’s horns gleam in the moonlight.
You hit the receiver.
“Contact, I have it in the classrooms, take out the trash yourselves and get here asap.”
Just static.
“Tch.”
“Hello to you too.” It’s voice is warm, and shifts in tone and cadence slowly as it speaks.
You pull out your box of cigarettes and tap out another. If it’s feeling cocky, you’ll take advantage.
“Yeah, right, hi. How about we play a game. It’s called, if you had to grade yourself on the official Department of Unusual Occurrences chart of Existential Threat Potential, what would you give yourself.”
It leans forward, it’s smooth chest curving into cleavage as it moves. Your gaze flickers, and it smirks.
“I don’t like labels. C, B, A, it’s all human hangups. Like morality, or gender.”
It tilts it’s chin up, highlighting it’s sharp, androgynous cheekbones. Then turns it’s face to the side, round faced and dewy eyed. It only changes while in motion, creating the perpetual illusion that maybe whatever you saw a moment ago was a trick of the light.
“Sure, yeah, down with labels. But for the game, you know. Fun. Gimmie a ballpark.”
It touches it’s lip thoughtfully with long slender fingers, it’s nails manicured and sharp. No, actually, it’s pointer and middle nails are trimmed.
“Afraid I’m more than you bargained for, Morgan?”
Being around a demon always feels strange. Like you’re skin’s on inside out. Not painful, just, sensitive side exposed. Feeling vulnerable is annoying. You take a bit of joy in ashing your cigarette on the counter.
“I’ll be fine. I just want to get a feel for how many seals to unlock.”
You pull your coat aside, letting it see the shortblade you brought with you, marked with three keeps. It’s eyes narrow appreciatively.
“Not an ordinary demon killing blade. What made you think you’d need something like that for a little thing like me?”
You scowl at it.
“I didn’t. I still don’t, honestly. Though if you give me a good enough reason I’ll give you the honor of being killed with one keep open.”
It smirks, leaning back on the desk, it’s eyes changing color every time you look away from them.
“Oh no thank you, dying doesn’t really suit me at the moment. I’ll be busy picking up my things and moving. This place is nice, but it’s already got a little too much foot traffic, you know?”
You brush the hilt of your blade with your thumb.
“Oh now you want to play games huh.”
“Not particularly. I’m just not in the mood for a fight. I could give you a little present if you’ll look the other way, how’s that sound.”
I don’t make deals with demons. I’m not stupid.”
“No? Oh, my mistake. Just your partner then.”
The comment cuts through your focus just the tiniest bit. It’s smile is ever so slightly sharp.
“Fuck you.”
“Did you not know? What’s her name again? Jackie?”
“Jackie is a merciless demon hunter.”
“Mercy has nothing to do with it. It’s all about desire.”
“I desire to go home and take a nice bath.”
But you’re a little tilted. You don’t like this feeling, like it knows something you don’t
“No. No, you want something she has.”
“Jackie’s my partner and my friend. What could I possibly want from her.”
It pulls back it’s shirt a little, showing off a glimpse of it’s full chest.
“Like I said, humans are obsessed with things that don’t matter, like gender. She wanted a new one terribly.”
Something like stones being piled in your stomach.
“That the best you got? Sniveling nonsense?”
“You’re jealous of her, because you can tell that she’s free in a way you feel you can never be.”
It taps it’s cheek.
“This place, it’s reminding you how unhappy you are, how unhappy you’ve always been. I can taste it on the air. The rot in your soul. Dissatisfaction.”
It leans forward, tracing the curve of it’s jawline with a sultry flourish.
“But, you can be happy. Little Jackie got what she wanted, after all. Who knows what it cost her. You though, you’d just have to look the other way for a few moments.”
The back of your neck feels prickly. It’s spouting lies of course, just. Something. It’s bothering you. Demons do have to keep up their end of the bargain, they just usually have all the leverage..
Wait, what the fuck are you thinking.
“You got any proof that my friend and ally for the last 5 years has been covering up a demon deal?”
The monster pulls up it’s shirt a little, exposing the soft curve of it’s stomach, then as it turns slightly, the toned muscles of it’s abdomen.
“She wouldn’t show you, of course, but she’s got a tattoo, right.. here.”
It traces a delicate curving pattern with it’s fingers, across the pale flesh.
“It’s unmistakable, when you see it. Gives humans the shivers to see a wish granted.”
You’re staring, and it’s messing with your head. There’s this conflagration of emotions. You can’t tell if it’s trying to seduce you, or just advertising what it thinks you want. Probably both.
“How do you know then? That she made a deal?”
It lets the shirt fall back to cover it’s stomach.
“The demon she dealt and I, we’re from the same leyline. We’re on good terms. If your bosses had gotten the intel right she likely would have declined this mission. She can’t hurt me, part of her deal. Whole leyline’s off limits.”
When did it get that close to you? You don’t even remember seeing it stand up. You scramble back, drawing your blade, but hesitating on the seals. The demon puts it’s hands up innocently, looking up at you with wide eyes.
“I’m surprised the poor girl’s managed to stay human as long as she has. Once you make a deal, there’s a sort of, gentle tug.”
“You’re not making a good case for me to take a deal from you.”
“So you’re considering it then?”
You swear in your head.
“Though I suppose there is a big downside. Your allies will kill her when they find out. No take backsies and all.”
It pisses you off, how much it seems to be enjoying itself. Even worse that you can’t make yourself shut it up.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I’m nice enough to explain what’s behind them before you pick a door.”
A wicked grin, a low chuckle.
“I suppose you could fight me, maybe win, then go back and expose poor Jackie. They’d probably not make you kill her yourself. You’d just look the other way.”
They bite their lip playfully, looking down their nose at you.
“Or you could get that secret thing that you’ve always wanted, granted in ways the human world could never offer. And you and her could stick up for each other. Maybe convince your other friend too. Run away together. A little family.”
“That’s stupid. This is stupid. You really think I’m gonna fall for this? That I wanna be a girl so bad I’ll sell out the whole fuckin human race?”
It just shrugs, eyes twinkling a rainbow of colors.

The door to the science lab slams open.
“Morgan! Please tell me you survived you dumbass!”
You turn to look at Jackie, with Case trailing close behind.
“Yeah, I’m fine. What took you so long.”
Jackie frowns at you, then looks around the trashed room. The benches are smashed and scorched, chairs thrown about.
“You told us to stay put then stopped answering calls! I ended up cutting my way through a dozen more of those creepy familiars.”
“Ten for me,” Case chimes in.
“Well, you handled it fine. Aside from the unusual number of familiars, this was pretty open and shut.”
“You killed the demon,” Case says.
“Yeah, not too bad. Got me pretty good on the arm.” You gesture to a slash on your bicep.
Case nods. “Where are the remains?”
You point over to a spot on the other side of the room, where a pile of ash forms a humanoid silhouette. You go back to attempting a makeshift bandage over the cut.
“Lemmie help with that,” Jackie insists.
“You sure everything went okay boss?”
She looks at you with concern. You look her in the eye, and blink.
“Yeah, yeah. Everything’s fine. Didn’t even release a seal.”
Her eyes narrow. Now that she’s this close, you feel a weird sensation around the lower curve of your stomach.
“Well, it all appears to be in order,” Case announces. You pull away from Jackie with a slightly strained smile.
“It’s late, let’s get back to the motel.”
Case nods, Jackie stays silent. They both walk out ahead of you.
For one second, you hesitate, and look back.
There’s a shadow on the window.
Black.
Shaped like a person but certainly not.
It tilts it’s head slightly, and you turn your back.

It’s a 4:30 am, when she finds you sitting alone at a picnic table, waiting for the sun to come up.
“Can’t sleep?” she asks quietly. You nod, and she slaps the back of your head.
“Hey, what was that for?”
“What did you do you little fuck,” she hisses at you.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“I mean I know you didn’t kill that demon.”
“Oh? Really? And how do you know that?”
Jackie hesitates.
“You’re underplaying how strong it was. You’re good, but that many familiars? They were all holding back too. That was a B, B plus grade demon. Maybe stronger.
You don’t look at her.
“Doesn’t matter how strong it was. It was playing games, holding back like you said, and I got the upper hand. Finished it before it knew it I was a threat.”
She gets closer, looks you in the eye. That sensation tingles across your belly again.
“Tell me you didn’t make a deal.”
“I didn’t make a deal.”
She hits the top of the picnic table and makes a frustrated noise before walking a tight circle and coming back.
“You realize how bad you fucked up?”
Your nerves finally snap.
“Oh like you’re one to talk!”
She’s speechless for a second, then pink creeps into her cheeks.
“Don’t try and distract me with random accusations!”
You roll your eyes. There’s a weird feeling rumbling up into your chest. Not really anger, just. Energy.
“Come on, I can feel it too. That’s how you knew, right? That feeling?”
Her eyes narrow.
“Don’t play dumb with me Jackie. Besides, the demon told me to tell you Ninth Canto Third Refrain says hello,” you growl.
She jumps backwards like you stung her. Then she bares her teeth at you.
“That’s my business. Nothing to do with you.”
“Nothing, really? You’ve been lying to me as long as I’ve known you, and it’s none of my business?”
She’s breathing heavier, and holding her hand on the lower part of her belly. You feel fire in your veins.
“I’ve kept it under control. I haven’t transformed. And I’m not going to.”
You light your last cigarette.
“I’m sure a lot of demons have said that in a past life.”
She snarls.
“What could you *possibly* have wanted that was worth this!?”
You shrug and gesture loosely at her with the cigarette before taking a drag. She looks confused.
“Me? What about-”
Her eyes widen.
“Shit fuck.”
“We’re both in the same boat now, Jackie, in more ways than one.”
She sits down heavily next to you. You still feel some kind of energy sparking between you and around you, a supernatural pull made stronger by proximity. Your skin prickles.
“I got a real dark feeling that this boat’s going down, Morgan. What the fuck are we supposed to do when it sinks?”
You pass her the cigarette. She looks at you, and a look you’ve seen before, but stronger. Hungrier. You match her gaze.
“Dunno. Guess we better learn how to swim.”
A long silence.
You don’t make it to the sunrise.
