0095 — Voting Day, by Philippe!
🕑 Added 2024-11-08 18:00:11 +0000 UTCTwo pages of unused panels and scripts from this strip post in Tiers 2 & 3 at noon, as does a new Roast Beef + Philippe interview on Saturday at 10am Pacific!
I will admit to writing this several days before the 2024 American Presidential election, so it is easy and accurate for me to claim this has nothing to do with those figures. This strip was originally going to be about a big game hunter (again, see the In-Universe Tier for those drafts at noon), but all the politics headline saturation suddenly sprang a leak in my head and it leaked upon the page. How does a child struggle to bend reality to this falsely diametric framing of his world? What is the path of his reasoning, and does his verdict on the matter resemble ours, or the opposite of ours?
I think the only thing that stayed from the original was the shooter named Jack. Also, I wanted to show the joy a little child feels when they realize they have the power to use end notes, just like textbooks do.
When did you first fall prey to the delicious power of academic citation markup styling? Sound off, F. Crews Crew!
Actually, don't answer that. Ending a media feed post with a phony-feeling call for interaction is so demeaning to us all.
(I mean, I really do enjoy interacting with you in the comments, as previous threads will attest, but please, let us speak organically, and not of real-world politics or joyless citation markup systems. I like to think of Achewood as an escape from both.)

6th grade age 11-12 1998-1999, learning that I would no longer be able to get away with just writing stream of consciousness style reaction essays as "homework" and that research/citations were in my future was such a bummer.

same here!

Someday I hope Phillipe will realize there doesn't need to always be buttholes in everyone's faces. Like we could arrange all the dogs in a circle so they get to see a whole bunch of other dogs instead of just butthole... He's got a good heart I think he'll get there eventually

"That's more of a me problem" seems to be the auto-reply in my brain these days.<1> 1. In grad school (mid-90s) my labmates and me all became erect upon discovering Endnote software. <2> 2. Wait, is this how footnotes work?
Chris Onstad
Doug: Yes, this is precisely where I got my taste for them.
Chris Onstad
Yes, I suppose the moral of the story is that if you aren’t the lead dog, the view never changes. And you don’t want to be behind a Shiba Inu, because they have bizarre purple buttholes
Chris Onstad
In truth, skeleton digressions are actually more of a me thing. Meta!
Chris Onstad
Love that footnote immediate access, end notes are all just “op cit ad ibid,” dry as a baked turkey dick
Sedric And Charlie
I will keep those in mind, thank you. Jonathan Strange has been in consideration for a while, because I did like Clarke's second novel 'Piranesi' a lot
@misterjayem
I'm more of a footnotes rather than endnotes kind of guy, but I'm not willing to argue about it.

Thanks for sharing! A couple good ones for more footnote fuckery: -Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell -Zona (ya gotta watch the movie Stalker first for this one)
Douglas Wykstra
First comedic novel that I read that used footnotes in this way was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think some Dave Barry collections had pieces that used them too.
Amit Katz
Philip pausing to realize he made a mistake inserting his own fears into the characters already qualifies him more than most writers in Hollywood
Ruxine
As Cornelius will soon divulge, it is in fact a fable, the main difference being the presence of a distinct moral. In this case, the moral was that Jack Canyon wasn't in charge of shit, and didn't know if he'd get to keep his steak or the climate.
Chris Onstad
That’s because dogs don’t argue (they just yell without goals, which explains a lot)
Chris Onstad
Teeth are the only part of the skeleton that tells people if it is safe to have you around the jewelry
Chris Onstad
A lovely post, but would have benefitted from end-notes, of course
GruntyGinMan
Watching a TV show about a family of serial killers is not my favorite thing for the little shaver
Julie (HiDeeHoGal)
Terry Pratchett did gratuitous footnotes too but, as was his wont, it was in parody of those who do them in earnest. And he was very rad, may he rest in peace.
Sedric And Charlie
The first time I ever seriously used footnotes was when I was thirteen, and I and a friend wrote a comedy novel that would frequently use fourth wall-breaking footnotes to expand upon or wholly derive its humour. I am certain I stole the idea from somewhere but I don't remember the source. Also when I say "and a friend" what I really mean is we said we'd do this, but I wrote for both of us. At the time I was secretly angry at him for not pulling his weight, but with hindsight I would more charitably suggest I was unable to tell when someone wasn't genuinely into the idea and was humouring me. He was still a dick though. Motherfucker stole all my Gameboy games. Much later I found out clever artistic novels like House Of Leaves and Infinite Jest also gratuitously abused footnotes and I've been insufferable ever since I appreciate the end of Philippe's minor opus, sort of his version of the 'Jupiter and Beyond' section of 2001

as a brain scientist, I can't argue with that

Not being in charge is simultaneously the worst but also the best.

Teeth are a special kind of bone. They are LUXURY bones.
Chris Onstad
Dogs are our brains
Chris Onstad
Teeth are what the skeleton starts from, they form first after the zygote

Hair is just long skin

Teeth may not be bones but he said it was part of his skeleton poking out and now I can't unsee it.
Chris Onstad
Ps teeth are bones they have marrow and everything
Chris Onstad
Sorry, this webcomic was never known for understanding the fourth wall (or urine)
Chris Onstad
He is sorry he mentioned steak but isn’t good at Content Warnings yet.
Cecilia Westbrook
I can't believe an esteemed webcomic is talking to me like this
Jeff Holt
I am vegetarian and I am glad Philippe loves me. Also, I always felt all forms of citation style are a waste of time. Just write that you got it somewhere, who cares
Aaron J. Rushton
My grandmother was THRILLED I wasn't president. Apparently her two biggest concerns before dying were that I would go into politics or that I might be gay, and I'm sure she's in heaven right now, enjoying that i am not in politics and deeply ashamed of some other stuff, or probably just dead.
Chris Onstad
Mostly because he touched a rusty nail and thinks he has Tetris. Thanks, Lie Bot.
Chris Onstad
You can't have it any more. The wrong person is in the biggest desk. Check back in four years. Right now it has a lot of pipes in it.
Chris Onstad
He hates hubris! And lemon jam.
Chris Onstad
Maybe I'll start aging him so he can be 35 one day and actually run.
Chris Onstad
I'm not sure what the comic says overall, but at least it got a few people considering the hobbies of skeletons.

This nation needs a gummy and a good show.

Even David Foster Wallace's name is too long, I only ever finish the first part of it

I think we'd be alright if we could just steak about it when things befuddle.

Next you'll tell us piss isn't stored in the balls, CC

That's when I knew the strip was wrapped

Philippe caught the episode of Yellowstone where they explain wheatgrass to a hippie and now he's all Mr Ag

It was a harder time, made of harder people, whose only identifiable quality was failure to lead all others. Unsustainable, if you ask some, but damn those kids had grit

My grandma never forgave me for not being president, too

Perfect Wisdom From Living On A Farm includes: letting your cattle free range on public land then shoot BLM range agents for trying to make you pay $2 a head to strip bare the American West.

I am having the worst week and the election was just a part of it. This was just a great week to bring lil' Phillipe off the bench.
Bungus Bronbo
And for the record, I at least became intrigued in the use of citations to add a great deal to a work when I read Shipping Out by David Foster Wallace, and also Mr Strange and Dr Norrel by Suzanne Clarke, the latter is pretty much peak fiction citations.
Bungus Bronbo
This is pretty timely. My mood lately has been pretty much Phillipe's reaction to Lie Bot saying there's a skeleton in the closet.

Jesus, Onstad.

Don't blame me, I voted for Philippe. He is five.

Rough couple of weeks for the little shaver.
