0100 — By the Hand of a Whiskey Mix-Up
🕑 Added 2024-12-13 18:00:13 +0000 UTCThe second image is a preview of what the usual noontime "making-of-this-strip" drawing board looks like — always available to tiers 2 & 3!
Thank you for being here, for helping Achewood get to this milestone — one-hundred straight comics. Two years ago this wasn't even an idea, and in the wake of The Netflix disappointment I didn't know if these characters would ever speak again. Now, because you are directly supporting the art you enjoy, all of Achewood and its limitless (ill-defined?) universe is back in play, for all that you used to like about it, plus hopefully new dimensions as well.
Every week that I write these strips and their attendant extracurriculars, I discover new possibilities for storytelling in this medium. This is thanks both to a now-clear head, and the reward of an audience who could always do with a little Ray and Beef. Here's to self-publishing as a great way forward for content too damn good to make it big.
I'll be writing with your happiness and laughter at heart as we here begin the path to Achewood's second hundred.

This is beautiful.
Chris Onstad
Yeah, I’ve written the story up in the author’s tier, in multiple installments (I still owe one or two). Thanks!
Amit Katz
I didn't even know you were in talks with Netflix. Seeing Achewood animated and voiced would be something
Chris Onstad
Thanks Migrel, it's still a hoot every week. Appreciate you hanging around for all of it!
Chris Onstad
Wasn't obvious to me either, but when it started to happen, it didn't stop happening...and I guess that's the most specific I can get about my writing technique
Chris Onstad
It surprises me every time it happens, but it also seems to make sense. Now that Darlene's dead (30 years? 40?) it's starting to look like he'll never have a boy of his own.
Migrel
I am not really a “laughing out loud” dude but that first panel caught me by surprise and I was cackling. Thanks for a cool hundo of strips and here’s to as many more as you have fun making.
Lionstooth
Lyle becoming the uncle/mentor figure is both something I never would have predicted back in the day and somehow obvious in hindsight
Chris Onstad
Dude, you need a care package from a state where legalization equals a barn burner of a full-strength products market. I never looked back to booze.
Professor Hazard
and since the Golden Tabloid storyline happened some years before that it was definitely part of my surrendering process to say "well, it worked for Beef", so thank you for that
Professor Hazard
Every time I try to explain it it sounds even crazier: delta 8 is the marijuana crystals that they can gather together from the dust from the hemp harvesting process and, because it is so tiny, it becomes legal to sell, despite mashing it together into big size. ?????? anyways it basically saved my life over COVID, when they started selling it in TN i was at my lowest and my wife left the house immediately to procure them as i sat there like a computer cat with wet bread in his sad mouth
Chris Onstad
The bev co was definitely another rocky marriage
Chris Onstad
Isn’t delta 8 the kinda sorta maybe not really but legal stuff you can bring to Europe? Anyhow, I’m a lightweight, 2mg of 1:1 gets me in the Place. (Admittedly, I enjoy being functional in the Place)
Professor Hazard
I was counting the soda fountain as a marriage. She is a cruel mistress, no? [french mickey mouse smoking cigarette]
Professor Hazard
As someone who started with Koi Delta 8 gummies I am always curious if there is a "pure" Highman's Experience I'm missing
Ben Wilinofsky
Lyle's sincere tenderness for the little shaver has always been my favorite piece of character depth. Everyone who's childhood was full of Circumstances just wants Phillipe to have the chances they didn't, and I think that's how we should all be with each other
Jeff Holt
Congratulations on the milestone! Every Corgi I’ve met has been a somewhat brain-dead freak.
Chris Onstad
I welcomed our edibles overlords and never looked back
John Krane
I am deeply touched by this as a dude reevaluating his relationship with alcohol. (Please also imagine that I also made a pithy joke here that everyone enjoyed.)
Chris Onstad
Let’s get a list together, and we can count petunia
GruntyGinMan
Yeah but there's been like...I want to say three in the comic?
Chris Onstad
There was a tent with bar-type people playing weird old card games, and the snack foods were sublime
Chris Onstad
I’m only on my second marriage, pal
Jason Scott
Ah, whoops! Milwaukee, WI, I meant. Couldn't see through the weepy-weep tears! And yes, the oldest category of dogs are the carry-me and half-wheelchair doggies. There's one old chap who's always so excited to have his dad carry him down the field.
Professor Hazard
It only took two publications, several marriages, and a patron-only feed, but somebody finally told Philippe they'd be his uncle.
Mustafa Beg
*nods sagely* ah, yes, Uncle Magic
Chris Onstad
Very good shi-tzu description
Chris Onstad
You say that, until he lives behind your couch for a quarter century.
J Hardy Carroll
Corgis are a gateway breed. Next thing you know it's dachshunds, chihuahuas, and shi-tzus. You see a lot of that shit in downtown SFO., dude sitting there with a fucking shi-tzu, eyes like a pair of open graves.
Chris Onstad
Samoyed in the mix is explosive indeed, a masterful move
Chris Onstad
Now get out there and fuck up that weekend!
Meadow Green
Lyle is lowkey the most wholesome character.
Chris Onstad
I have been to that exact event, but in Milwaukee WI. The last category was dogs so old or infirm they had to be carried down the track. A priest was there, and also I think a beloved weatherman
balbert
Wow. "If a corgi was a button I would hit it with a hammer" and "You'll enjoy waking up someone who can drive" are both some primo shit. (Two on Fridays!) Thank you for my weekly fix, Uncle Chris
Jason Scott
"Uncle Lyle". Goddamn you, Onstad, I have too much to do today to sit here and weep. As a thank you for Christmas-type feels, and to continue the adorable small dog vibe, please allow me to make you and everyone else aware of the annual Dachshund Derby held in Milwaukee, MI every year on my birthday. (Unrelated, but it's a swell annual present for me.) Every year I go visit one of my very favorite knuckleheads from back in the day, consume tons of German food and beer, and watch dachshunds run. There are several categories organized by age, with each group named after a different type of sausage (the puppy category is named "Lil Smokies", for example). Some dogs run to win, some dogs run to lose, and some dogs are just there for the pets. It is followed by a costume contest. Video evidence: https://germanfest.com/entertainment/dachshund-derby/

They got back together! You could go see them live again; they just wrapped up a reunion tour but just announced another (smaller) one for 2025!!
Traedran
Hubby once had to grab me by the collar of my shirt to keep me from running across moving traffic to go play with a samoyed/corgi mix on the other side of the street. Lyle, teach this child well. Don't let him turn out like you or me.
Jason Scott
Goddamn I miss that band. "Oso" was fine but "Ruby Vroom" was hands down the best imho.
Josh Burton
Yup, I'm definitely going to have to start saying "Haven't you heard of health?" to people. And probably to myself.
Chris Onstad
I just listened to super Bon Bon. Not all of it. Just enough to picture Tower Records and an empty bank account.
Chris Onstad
That made me sit back and think pretty hard. Just about everything. Soul coughing. Just, wow.
Tim from New Hampshire
I'm so old when I hear "Oso" I think of a 1998 album by Soul Coughing
Pubdoggy
You mean. The smell of success? You do.
Chris Onstad
The bus may smell like fish lunches and the multifaceted digestion of beer at times, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Pubdoggy
Jesus, Chris. Just thanks a huge lot for getting back on the bus man. From ‘the world’.
Chris Onstad
The cocked angle of his neckwear would indeed suggest this, but he seemed to be on more of a kibble caper.
Dan W
Did Oso have... whiskey mix-ups?
Chris Onstad
Cake recipe at seven!
Chris Onstad
This realization came to me the other day when I walked out of my house onto the sidewalk and a small Pembroke named Oso ran up to me. I also saw him later that day, and he had a crooked bow tie on.
Jacquelyn R Walters
Haha, amazing! But, uh, Dracula don't got much money this week, so I shan't be ordering one. Rats.
Chris Onstad
Stolen valor, if you ask me.
Chris Onstad
"Queen Elizabeth II owned more than 30 Pembroke Welsh Corgis and dorgis (corgi-dachshund mixes) during her 70-year reign." The key word here is dorgi. Am searching for images now, and also wondering why it's not spelled "adore-gi"
Ismini Roller
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you, and for us! ❤️
Ben Wissett
Corgis are the perfect dogs for Philippe to like.
Chris Onstad
This reminds me of my plan to offer a boiled wool beanie impregnated with all kinds of Lyle-type aromas. I have long wanted to create jobs for the unwashed.
Julie (HiDeeHoGal)
I hope Uncle Lyle can prevent Philippe from becoming a corgi hoarder. Like that couple who hoarded chinchillas and ended up presumably burning their house down because Teodor did a doodie on their lawn. (Proof that I am neck deep in the lore, here's some hagiographic nonsense for you Mr Onstad)
Jenn
Uncle Lyle 😭
Chris Onstad
The time he got locked in a girl's school in Scotland and was forced to become sober starts here: https://lyle151.blogspot.com/2004/11/
Jacquelyn R Walters
UNCLE LYLE. Lyle has long been my probable fave character, and he's been consistently compelling in the Patreon reboot. Thank you, Chris, for giving us the privilege of supporting the art we love. (And "Haven't you heard of health?" is immediately added to my lexicon.)
Chris Onstad
I originally had him ask to be called Lyle G, all AA style, bringing Philippe into the family, but that didn't quite fit.
Chris Onstad
Sometimes, addiction brings the family Together. But don't try it as your first recourse in solving any interpersonal problems.
Chris Onstad
There is room for both here, brother. Start with the corgi thing. I think everybody's jonesing for some stubdog time.
Christopher Malone
The evolution of Lyle has taken a remarkable leap forward...
Josh Egbert
Uncle Lyle. I nearly wept.
Aaron J. Rushton
Holy shit man, it's been a Time since the feelings I'm feeling from the final panel came to me from any piece of fiction. That's some prime Dad Emotions you've supplied me with your silly talking animal webcomic strip, my guy. Thank you for the warm fuzzies.
EndgamerAzari
Torn between expressing the sincere emotions this comic made me feel and making a joke about my lifelong corgi addiction. Poster's dilemma.
