As I tell people trying to learn the language. The English Language is something that jumps other Languages in back alleys and then rifles through their pockets for loose grammar and spare vocabulary.

Maybe "frowned upon" is clearer? I think this is considered passive voice, and that the target of the preposition here is the subject of the sentence, which is the verb phrase "to split".

I wanted to complete "To barbarously split an infinitive is ... not well thought of." I was trying to end the sentence on a preposition. Unfortunately, I'm not sure "of" is functioning as a preposition there, or something else (particle? part of an adverb phrase? Does anyone know? I'm dying to know how clever I'm not and in what way I'm not clever.
