I was a Realtor during the time of Beverly Carter’s murder in 2014, and it really shook the industry’s sense of safety. Many Realtors were assaulted or murdered, and her story highlighted the risks we face simply doing our jobs. Beverly had taken steps like coded check-ins and not showing homes alone—but those precautions only work if followed every time. When brokerages began requiring pre-screening, driver’s license copies, or working in pairs, there was significant pushback—not just from clients but from some Realtors themselves. Many worried these practices would slow down deals or cost them business, while others believed “gut instinct” was enough protection. I worked in the industry from 2002–2017, and safety was always top of mind. I personally turned away clients who refused to meet at the office first or provide ID—no commission was worth jeopardizing my safety. During that time, in my local area there were serial predators specifically targeted Realtors for the very reasons mentioned: we’re often alone, in unfamiliar locations, and perceived as easy targets.
