I've always appreciated JJ's character and never made the Lip connection but that's a really solid parallel!! I like the element of JJ's character that, like Lip, he's driven by survival mostly, but JJ also does make solid attempts/choices that steer towards benefiting his found family with the Pogues (even if they don't see it that way initially). Even his chaotic choices are coming from a place of wanting to protect or provide for John B, Pope and Kie.

I think JJ habitually fucking up is pretty normal for someone who comes from a background like him. It's like Lip from Shameless (US), he's super smart but his circumstances of growing up in poverty has led him to self-sabotage a lot. JJ has everything working against him, people pretty much decided he's a waste which is how society looks at poor people.
