The "inspirational teacher" was a big 90s trope, probably all inspired by Dead Poets Society. From Mr. Turner on Boy Meets World, to a very similar substitute teacher who lets the main character down on My So-Called Life.

it's funny how that happens; sometimes even in just subtle things. like you can think a teacher is really awesome and cool and wanna be "just like them!!" but then all it takes is one thing and you realize "oh." it's exactly that, she was a good teacher until she wasn't and when i first watched this episode that bugged me, because it felt random. but then in rewatching and remembering my own school days i'm realizing sometimes that randomness is the reality of it

yeah you guys were pretty much on the ball, we do drink from a very young age here but it's absolutely not a thing to go to your teacher's house to drink with them, that would be incredibly illegal lol. i think it's exactly like zuff said, she was a good teacher until she wasn't.
