I think Alaric no longer being an original so Elena remains compelled is lazy writing. When in Season 2 they showed us that when an original dies or is daggered the compulsion is lifted. If anything the compulsion should have been lifted. I think that the actors did not want to work together much anymore so this is their way of making sure they didn't have too

If Alaric could have survived then so should have elena. She shouldn't have started drowning imo. It could have been an interesting storyline of her being human again.
