Tbh, I think Michael Trevino was ready to move on from the show, especially as it was the last season and Tyler had no legit storyline, and they couldn't really think of a plausible reason for him to not be there till the end (I guess Jeremy had a good reason for not being there so that he could go hunt vampires and Elena wasn't there either so it was easy to just write off Jeremy as alive somewhere else), but with Tyler, he really had nothing else going on and Liv was dead, so the only logical thing to do was to kill him off. But it sucks because he's one of the main characters of the show that's been there from S1, and Damon got off easily for that.
