The fact that this is all a true story is what really fucks me up about this show. So well done, but so upsetting. I'm glad the real-life woman Alex is based on (Stephanie Land) is safe now and can share her story with others. It's also so nuanced- people think about abuse & poverty and only think of one streamlined story. Abuse can look many different ways. Also, this episode makes me really understand why women go back. Sean is pleading to her about how much he says he loves her whilst nobody else will catch her a break besides the person who is giving sustainability to her and her child. Which feels too delicate to touch. People wonder why women go back to abusive partners, and here you are sympathizing for Sean in no time. People aren't just good and evil. People are complex, and they feel complicated about the abusive partners they go back to. Then it gets bad and worse and worse in no time. Then you escape again. And cycle repeats.
