GOOD TIMING

This is why I don’t take holidays.
(TLDR: first world problems/ third world problems with first world medical support)
I managed to scrape up some time and money to fly myself to Geneva to meet my friend’s new baby and help them with basic carpentry and babysitting skills to fit up their gorgeous old world chalets for Airbnb. Yeah, I have some fancy friends.
I landed, met the excellent baby (truly an excellent baby) and then went for a lovely walk up to the shops in the snow past a burbling alpine river and through some properly gorgeous snow draped mountain forest trails to buy groceries for the team, and then upon getting home promptly collapsed for 48 hours of delirious bed soaking fever and coughing like a flipping Louisa May Alcott consumptive.
I mean if you’re going to be insanely sick it might as well be in an archaic mountain chalet with winding staircases and lovely views.
Normally when I’m sick, I tend to fight viciously against good “stay in bed” advice, but this time, “getting out of bed” for things like “going to the toilet” was a genuinely difficult task. I think I was awake for about 5 hours of that time. So I guess I caught up on sleep? Which is a bonus.
Now I feel just normal-sick except my recovery day has involved losing all my fluids through every possible exit channel (BECAUSE WHO NEEDS FLUIDS ON THE INSIDE) and being completely useless for both home renovation and babysitting except waving and coughing weakly at the baby from the other side of the room and getting full of rage at people on Twitter.
I fly out tomorrow and should be better enough to go to rehearsal for Andy Zaltzman’s show which is starting at the Soho theatre Monday night, and in which I will be playing various bit parts.
I have been sharing pretty pictures of the nice mountains on Instagram etc, which just goes to prove that you can’t trust social media at all.

What’s the biggest disjunct you’ve had between your private life and social media life?

As someone who has suffered issues with depression throughout my adult life, the large disjunct about how I feel vs what social media says has always hit me. Often when I get long sustained period of depression, I lose a lot of weight. A picture might go up and then every one will comment "how great you look!" congratulating me on slimming down when what it cost me is to feel for months that I want to die inside. So now I avoid posting unless I'm going to say something real. And I don't post pictures of myself.
Glad to hear you will be joining Andy again but gutted that I can't be there because I will be on holiday overseas #firstworldproblems Hope you are feeling much better now!
