Pill Pod 135 - Political Mythologies of the Left and Right ft. Diego Ruzzarin
🕑 Added 2023-08-15 12:00:07 +0000 UTCHey all, we got Diego Ruzzarin back to discuss the political mythologies of the Left and Right as analyzed by Roland Barthes in his 1957 book (https://amzn.to/47i5kpd). If you end up acquiring a copy, you'll find what we talk about here in the last chapter: "Myth Today."

I don’t like how Diego episodes tend to devolve into jargon-babble. Reminds me of class sessions with the most pretentious people in my PhD program

136 is next :D

funny no one ever mentions Trotsky. Sadly overlooked. Guess Stalin did a good job silencing his position of perpetual revolution.

Is there a pipeline of advertising to philosophy? Lol - coming from a disaffected advertiser at their desk

I'd suggest that the privileged left could generate myths along fault lines in rightwing solidarity, but during brexit the neoliberal side just went full fascist to reconnect to the nationalist side. They have that capital flexibility. If climate change became a significant divide, maybe they would adopt greener policies? Could go the other way though, but then they already are.

"The idea of race is a petty bourgeois’s way of trying to become an aristocrat. At a stroke he acquires a set of ancestors and has something to look back – and down – upon"

I wish you’d said that sooner. I spent all morning cleaning my room.

Shit, that bit on politics being when we shape the world in an act of doing really gels nicely with Baudrillard’s death of the political/transpolitical, cause politics today largely is dead and people just operate as data points in a series of cybernetic systems. Also dig Diego’s pointing out the myth of equality on the left, as even Marx never argued for equality as a goal of communism.

The whole naming thing reminded me a lot of how in Christian/occult theology, knowing and speaking the name of demons gives you power over them.

I am adamant in my stance that some form of DaDaist Zen is the only way beyond myth.

How about Camus for rule one: "There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide." And after that one is solved, wring every drop of fascination out of the rest of what the world decides it's going to do today (even Barbie🙃)

Ok, so if it’s all just myth or hyperreality or whatever. What’s the point of any of this? Again I ask, are we really better for having read (or listened to you explain) Mythologies or Fatal Strategies then we would have been having spent the time watching Barbie or The Avengers? Fuck it! This too chaotic, I just need some simple rules that will give me a sense of meaning. Not to many though, just like a dozen… Maybe two. 🤔

Always excited about Diego 🤗
