Chapter 500 - 7th Floor
🕑 Added 2024-11-28 09:36:38 +0000 UTCI blink, and the Champion is gone. Instead, she stands near us, the remains of our defenses crumbling. She looks at the sky, the dust once again filling it, the light of the sun blocked.
The vyssari looks at Tess for a moment and smiles. "Good luck to you and your party, Tess."
With those simple words, she disappears again, moving at speeds that we can't follow, only a lightning trail remaining in the air behind her.
Just a few seconds later, lightning streaks across the blood-red sky, visible even from this distance, signaling the fight's renewal. Hundreds—thousands—of bolts crash down in rapid succession, and only after several seconds do we hear the first thunderclap, a stark reminder of how far away the battle truly is.
Then we begin to feel the tremors too—a constant barrage of vibrations from the shockwaves of the distant fight.
The air becomes noticeably colder, and in the opposite direction of the lightning and storm, a blizzard appears on the horizon, stretching nearly through its entirety.
"Did that eye free the remaining prisoners? The lightning vyssari and whatever it was in the north behind permafrost?" Min-Jae asks, unable to take his eyes off the clash far in the distance.
"It seems like it. Nat, Sophie, we might need to hurry, like really really hurry. I don't think we are far enough to survive as they increase the output and that last prisoner might be worse than the two of them combined," Tess says, taking her eyes off the blizzard.
"I should be done," I answer and start putting the pieces of the array on the ground. "You two, help."
Dennis and Aaron quickly join me, just as we practiced, their skills activating momentarily and connecting the parts. Sophie, meanwhile stands here with her eyes closed and brow furrowed, and I can imagine the amount of work she is currently doing in her mind. Tess realizes it as well and leaves her alone.
Izzy's flames surround us, blue and warm, fighting against the increasing cold that is already creating ice all around and causing snowflakes to start falling gently. Izzy´s blue flame even touches us, but there is no damage at all; it just burns gently.
Noodle expands his size, becoming as thick as a tree trunk and making a circle around our ground, his mouth open as he devours all the mana radiation gradually reaching us.
The others join as well, doing their best to set up defenses while the fight in the distance becomes worse. The sky becomes a darker shade of red until it feels like you can touch it. High in the sky, fleshy veins grow within it, resembling both vegetation and inscriptions.
Just the fact that we can see them from so far away tells about their size. Just how big might they be? Miles and miles tall and wide.
They form into shapes of inscriptions, generating fields, attacks, and defenses that crash against that small figure that flew there to fight the one who freed her.
Within the blood-red sky, red and white lightning crackles relentlessly, unleashing attacks that obliterate the eye's creations. These strikes form colossal lightning weapons, each as massive as a mountain. Explosions ripple through the air, scattering the dust and tearing through the red domain of the sky, allowing shafts of light to break through.
And there, from the other side, a blizzard coming closer, within it an unknown presence. The closer it moves, the more sluggish my mana feels, as if the cold is slowly freezing it.
Done with setting up the array, I move to help Sophie. The twins connect our efforts, and we push to make it all work. All while the moon, the Astral prison around us, starts breaking apart. A little part of me watches it all happen.
The anger that has been simmering within me resurfaces. The realization that there is nothing I can do currently. There may be "just" a 200-level difference between me and the Champions, but the gap is still immense. I don't try to push this anger away; instead, I let myself feel it. I let it fuel through my body and make sure to remember all the feelings I feel now. My weakness and powerlessness.
Then Sophie activates the array finally, pushing through with her all before collapsing, and together with the twins, all of them being caught by others before hitting the ground.
I feel the same as the entirety of my mana is channeled through my body, all of it sucked away by the array, but I endure. It's something I can do.
One by one, everyone in group four passes through the array. I take a step forward but pause, turning to look back, engraving the scene behind me deep into my memory.
Only then do I cross through, and as the view shifts, notifications appear.

I force strength into my legs and stand upright.
There are dozens of people passing by us: lynthari, humans, thylarin, demons, all sorts of races. Everyone is wearing full armor even as we are in something akin to an outpost—temporary buildings made of stone, wood, some inside the trees that seem to have grown naturally, or buildings made of crystals.
A constant barrage of words can be heard.
"... heard they need more on the 5th front, the pay is nice..."
"I won't fight alongside any demon, those guys are..."
"There is said to be a spy in the main camp, they offer an arcane item if you bring information to reveal them..."
"... no, only Champion Safie and Feroy are taking disciples, not everyone. Especially Feroy is... picky. Did you hear..."
"... so maybe? It's said a Champion-grade monster appeared on the 2nd front so you bet I will fucking skip that place."
"... attacked smithies. Weapons became more expensive again."
"Nobody can get through that array in that cursed forest—not even Champion Owain. There’s a rumor he’s planning to ask his master for help, but yeah, good luck with that. The Absolute is the only thing keeping us alive, so I’d say he’s got his hands full."
And many more.
We are mostly ignored and passed by without notice. Even the levels of all these people are not that dissimilar from our own, some rarely breaking through level 300. There are some with levels just over 100, but I don't think I can see anyone lower. Most of them hovering close to 200 or over.
We grab the still unconscious twins and Sophie and pull them to the side, walking in between the massive buildings until we find a quiet spot far away, just below a simple wall. It's made entirely out of wood. There are no joints, no gaps in the wall at all; it all seems like one single piece.
Catching our breath, we sit quietly, all of us likely reminiscing about what happened while Lily heals everyone who needs healing.
I want to warn her to hide the candidate title like me and Tess, but she is already doing so, likely Tess told her when I was busy.
"At least the rewards for the floor quest are nice, right? I got a passive skill combination token," Maya is the first to open the conversation. "And I can communicate and send some stuff to my disc..."
Her eyes move to the unconscious Aaron, likely remembering his disciple who died, and then she buries her face in her palms with a loud groan. "Fuck, I forgot."
"Be careful, please, he is still sometimes sad because of that," Izzy warns her and gently taps the boy's head.
"Yeah, I will," confirming it, Maya reads the invisible message from the air. "So the floor quest is..."
"We will need to talk about it and decide what to do," Tess confirms. "This one is unusual."
The same as them, I open my notifications and reread them.

I think it's reasonable to say the longer we stay, the better the reward will be or the better we do. The question is how long should we stay? At what point does it become more worth it to head to the next floor rather than trying to maximize our rewards here?
Or at what point does it become too dangerous—because I'm sure that's something that will happen. Especially hearing all these people talking about Champions, frontlines, mercenaries, and such.

Wandering around the outpost, we collect a bit of information and let our bodies heal and mana regenerate. My crown is already over my head, ready to store all the mana that won't fit into my body or reservoir.
The planet we are on this time is nicely warm but not hot, a feeling of the last warm days of summer with a nice breeze present. In the sky, there are a few floating islands far in the distance, and I can sense something akin to the Veil surrounding us. It's not as powerful as on the 5th floor, rather it is much more basic. There are a lot of triggers, so I don't connect to it or examine it too deeply.
Tess is able to use some of the materials we have to pay for rent for a small house near the edge of the outpost, near the wooden wall. The house is just big enough for all of us, making us share a room with at least one other person.
We spend a few days without trying anything. Just taking our time, training and healing, and collecting information, the Beyond expedition coming close in just a few days. Me, Tess, Sophie, and Lily all should be able to go. That would leave Maya, the twins, Izzy, Noodle, Biscuit, and Min-Jae behind.
So we do all our best to make a somewhat safe base for the ones staying behind.
During one of these days, a message appears in the Beyond community.

"What’s the classification?"
"Still Easy-tier difficulty, sir. Estimates suggest all current groups will remain in this category. However, based on information shared by returnees, we predict Normal-tier difficulty to emerge within the year."
"Did you review yesterday’s report and recommendations?"
"Yes, sir."
"Thoughts? Be honest."
"Permission to speak freely, sir?"
"Granted."
"Honestly, sir, I don’t like it. But I understand the logic behind the recommendation."
"Good. You’ll be joining that unit as my intermediary."

"I agree that involving the families of suspected returnees is a logical next step. However, I’m concerned, sir. If individuals from Hell-tier difficulty finish their tutorial at Grade 5 on our scale, even only speaking to their families about them could provoke a dangerous reaction.”
“Let me ask you this instead: what happens if we’re left with no information or means to negotiate with one?"
The room falls into a heavy silence.
"No response? Then carry out the orders."

I’m not really sure what that would spit out. What would the higher tier of mana crown and mana domain be? Feels like they can’t be combined unless they are also combined with several other mana skills, such as mana manipulation, ring, mantle, maybe several more as well to get one super [Mana] skill. Not sure if there are combination tokens that take more than one skill, though.

Rick is right. Ruby has all but been confirmed as the Ruler of Greed, which means the original Lyss is either dead or severely weakened/wounded from the destruction of the real Eladore. My headcannon is that either her body remains with an inscription of her mind or shes still alive but just barely. I think thats why cockroachsandra wants to go back to her planet so bad, so she can absorb/meld with her old body (knowledge base) and get a super powerup.

What an absolute banger of a chapter, holy shit. That scene with Nat looking at the Champions, focusing on his feelings of powerlessness was chef's kiss. Lowkey one of my favourite moments of the series. 7th floor seems made for Nat. Constant battles to sharpen himself against and plenty of opportunities to observe others, their skills and how they fight. Now that each of Group 4 have settled on an identity, I'm hoping to see them develop team moves and work on small scale tactics. And of course, Liss is back. There will come a day where Nat graduates from Court Lady's pet to Young Irritating Child, and it will be glorious. Super stoked to have her more involved - their mentor/disciple relationship is excellent. Btw, if an earth government goes after Nat's mum, they'll be double fucked lol. Good luck going against Nat and Vic both.

They can, but they can only tell the mark is from someone old and powerful, but not who. Also all it tells them is he is a champ candidate(remember he hasnt been declared an absolute candidate yet, hes going to shoot for that in the next Lyssandra training arc) imo they can only tell he is a champ candidate and whomever left the mark is both old and strong, but not how strong, or who it is Edit: i re-read the last ch and im wrong, they can tell that liss is/was an absolute, so they can get a rough measure of her str.

The only reference they have right now is easy difficulty. Perhaps to maintain their sanity, perhaps because they simply can't fathom it, they are lowballing the threat level of higher difficuties. Furthermore, they have absolutely no other options to leverage control over tutorial attendees, relying on goodwill isn't gonna cut it. To them, doing nothing means accepting that their sovereignty is going to be compromised.

I think I understand what’s implied, but don’t truly get the full picture. What they are planning on doing is extremely dangerous as pointed out, and the risk to reward ratio is so extreme that makes little sense in taking such action.

Wait a sec. We know that champions and absolutes can see the mark on nat. Does that mean him being there would cause a confusion with the battling sides? due to an unknown absolute disciple in the fray. So he’s a walking variable that they’ll have to do something about. Unless the system hides it. I like what’s happening on earth. We also have to remember that the system is unlocking for the earth as more and more attendee return. So the military and the like will have access to the system but not the shop. That is to say, any skills they learn it’ll have to be from their on effort or taught by someone, hence the master discipline ritual.

Her only weakness on Floor 5 against the Champion was the inability to produce her own mana but I am pretty sure she fixed that problem either by taking something from that Champion or whatever she did when she got to the dead Absolute.

I disagree. She tried and failed to become a ruler in her first real life. Meaning she was top top tier Absolute. Presumably the power differential there between standard Champions and almost ruler means any “weakness” she has currently is essentially not enough of a weakness to matter in the tutorial

All her skills will be lv70+ and as a Player now she can start gaining levels again. Getting to lv250 on the 5th floor would not have been much of a challenge for her and Absolutes don't play by the same ruleset as Champions. Levels don't matter because there is just a qualitative difference between Champions and Absolutes regardless of level.

Lissandra is starting from scratch with weakened stats. She was weaker than Nat, but her experience won out. I don't think she can win against full powered champs going haywire, as we have only seen her beat a weakened logical champ.

I have a lot of stories going on at once in my head so I couldn't remember if she died or not. If they do use Nat's mother though I could genuinely see Nat killing them all. It fits with his Pride and there is no way he is going to let people tell him what to do so Tess is going to have her hands full if she has to keep the peace.

My head canon is that she arrived just as they all left and when she saw 3 champions duking it out she slapped some discipline into the unruly lot to clear the floor. That said if everyone left Floor 6 before Lissandra got their she might get a fresh Floor 6 or it will continue immediately as Group 4 left it because each Floor closes behind them when they leave.

Having the floor change exactly on the 500th chapter is ✨Very Nice✨. The 6th floor moon prison was great. It was a really interesting environment with many interesting side quests and interesting new NPCs. I like how the whole floor was an elaborate puzzle. It was like a Zelda game. That message from mama Liss is pretty terrifying. If Nat doesn't endure enough waves to satisfy Lissandra as her disciple, he will probably be punished. If I remember correctly, Liss only intended to fix her own situation after she helped Myrra. Seeing as Liss is already using the tutorial message system, This implies Myrra is officially part of the tutorial as well. That makes me happy.

Presumably, they know who disappeared around the time the tutorials were starting. They don't know what difficulty of tutorial they went to, but if they talked to the families of all of the disappeared people, that will of course include the families of the hell difficulty tutorial attendees.

Lmao. I wonder how their scale is working. Id assume that the people getting out either stayed the full 5 years, meaning they've seen at least 2 tournaments, at which point, the hell difficulty players they've seen were probably half(or less) strong than they could be by the end. Whereas if theres a tournament right before the 5 years are up then they'll likely be somewhat accurate in their strength... As far as an easy difficulty player could even comprehend... OR the people getting out were 'like' that serial killer, and just speedran the floors, meaning that the easy difficulty people who stayed longer will be even stronger than the ones they see now. Id bet that even outside of beyond difficulty, hell difficulty will be, on average, as strong or stronger than their scale predicts

YES! Finally on the next floor and it could be really cool with the different fronts, some with champions, some without. I guess we will see a real war that will escalate further and further. And I love seeing snippets of earth. Would love to see a little bit more of it.

Yeah seems very shortsighted if they go for the stick method to threaten Hell Difficulty returnees. Also I don't think Nat has anyone they can use except his sister who is also a Hell difficulty. If memory serves his mother died and his sister already killed their father.

And, if they fuck with some hell difficultys family, they are so going to regret that. Because no matter what they do, they can't do anything to them. The easy difficulty ones are already causing problems, they are, as far as we know, unable to contain them. Hell difficulty is just on another level, and provoking them right after they escaped something that was constantly trying to kill them, is a really bad idea

Well if she made it to Floor 6 the clear requirements will be a joke to Lissandra. Seriously she will just kill all the Champions for fun and then leave to see if her Little Pup has been keeping up his training. Floor 7 will be really interesting with an Absolute helping them the Waves probably can't get hard enough to challenge them unless the floors Absolute and Lissandra start to clash because of Lissandra's pride.
