I guess it's a mix of "testing her strength" and defending his people. He doesn't want them dead even if they are misguided.

New Prediction: He's testing Macey's fighting skills against his own. If she has trouble with him, or can't beat him at all by herself, then she and her team won't stand a chance against those in the ship. Hopefully he's only trying to make her realize she's being too overconfident.
