The double standard is because of the legal definition of a brothel I think. I could be wrong but the tradition still stands now. A house full of women engaging in private time with men like that was considered a brothel so they didn't even let them have "houses" for sorors on some campuses and only allowed women groups to meet in campus meeting rooms.

The desperation in Jess's voice while screaming for Barb and Phil's voice is devestating. Jess can't get the front door open because it's one of the old doors that requires a key to unlock, even from inside. The briefly show her locking it from outside while checking the doors and windows.
