The Harbinger was a beautiful ship. Scout watched as Master Skywalker lingered under the viewportsâa rare, unguarded expression gracing his face as he trailed his gloved fingers along each and every shiny and flat surface of his flagshipâs bridge. The surfaces Scout had slaved away every night since her assignment to memorise and learn, until she could draw their internal circuitry on the back of her hand.
After all, her master was going to be the Anakin Skywalker. How could she have not heard of his seemingly defining characteristic?
Whenever and wherever military types crossed pathsâin battle, in briefings, in small talk with a drink in whatever mess hall, or even the occasional civilian bar. Even the Jedi who fought on the front lines talked about him, too. Everyone who relied on the massive Republic warships knew that their odds of survival had increased because Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker liked to muck about with machinesâwhen he wasnât busy being the scourge of the Separatists.
So Scout learned to keep up. The long-range scanning station, comms, helm, tactical, atmospherics, and everything else that kept Harbinger lumbering along and fighting. And yet, no matter how much she tried, she knew she would never understand Master Skywalkerâs love for his machines. She doubted anybody would.
Oblivious to his audience, to the urgency of their mission, the Jedi Knight communed in leisurely silence with the newly commissioned cruiser. As though they shared a telepathic conversationâ as if the ship were whispering secrets in his ear.
Anakin Skywalker loves machines as if they were living, breathing creatures.
She knew this. She knew this because each and every component was pristine and spotless; no blaster burns, no scorch marks from shorted wiring, no war wounds at all. And Anakin Skywalker could only ever regard all of it with this subdued, rueful smile. One nearly wishful.
Because Anakin Skywalker had a pristine, spotless cruiser before. His very first. The very first command he ever received following his ascension to Jedi Knight.
Resolute.
And on Resoluteâs very first major engagement, she was shot and torn apart. The very moment Anakin Skywalker departed his first flagship to battle on the crystal grounds of Christophsis, the Separatists struck like a viper and made him pay dearly.
Firsts⊠were important. Scout knew this. Resolute mustâve felt like tangible proof that he was truly a Jedi Knightâa Jedi Generalâmore so than any ceremonious Knighting or removal of Padawan braid. And he failed that responsibility.
Scout knew this because she knew that feeling all too well. After all, Master Skywalker was tangible proof that she truly was a Jedi Padawanâmore so than any dumb tournament. She felt a tiny prickle of fright. No, no, no. Don't think about that, donât think like that. Iâve prepared for this, fought for this.
Besides, once assigned to this man she had made her own private and personal vow quite apart from the public oaths sheâd sworn in the Jedi Temple.
I will not be the Padawan who gets the Chosen One killed.
Even more so after everything heâs done for me.
âUnpleasant thoughts, Commander?â
If it wasnât for the shiver that ran through her body beforehand, Scout mightâve just leapt out of her skin at Admiral Yularenâs sudden comment. Her precognition was the only Force ability she had any pride in, but the Admiral somehow had a way of sneaking up on her every time. No, not just her; the man was not unlike a cat, slinking around, which she supposed kept the crew on their toes in every waking hour.
He took her startled silence as its own answer, âA word of advice, Commander. If even I can infer your thoughts from mere conjecture, then your mind is most certainly laid bare to the General.â
Scout stared at Master Skywalker. If the Jedi Knight did indeed, then he never showed it.
â...Is there anything I must relay to the General, Admiral sir?â she asked.
âWhat do you suppose it will be?â Admiral Yularen looked down at her, an eyebrow raised.
Scout observed the quiet hustle of the datapits, then at the fleet of Horgo Shive just a scant few million klicks away. The Siege of Vorzyd V was in a deadlock, with the Separatist Havoc Squadron stubbornly refusing to sally out from the range of Vorzydâs ground-to-orbit batteries.
After a brief scuffle on Nam Chorios, their battle group was ordered to pin down Havoc Squadron while High General Rancisis led the assault on Columex. Scout had heard that it was much the same for other elements of the Open Circle, with General Kenobiâs half besieging Sy Myrth in order to hold the entire Triellus Trade Route hostage. The strategy was simple; deprive the Separatists of their numerical superiority by pinning down as many of their fleet assets as possible by positioning their inferior numbers in strategically critical locations.
It worked, as last she heard, the joint Sector Fleets outnumbered the Separatistsâa true statistical anomaly. On the other hand, Scout couldnât help but notice that it was the Open Circle Fleet that had been sidelined to this menialâalbeit crucialâtask. If she had to hazard a guess, Scout would say Republic High Command depended on Columex as a badly needed victory, and couldnât risk the Jedi Command taking credit.
Regardless, after their objective had been completed, Governor-General Renau soon gave the order to assault the Vorzyd System directly. But to Scoutâs buried, traitorous relief, it appeared that Horgo Shive had learned his lesson from his defeat at Vjun. Now, the Muun commander refused to leave the umbrella of Vorzydâs orbital defences, and after the terrifying reminder of what GTO artillery could accomplish at Salvara, Admiral Yularen wasnât willing to risk approaching either. To make matters worse, Havoc Squadron and the Vorzyd System Defence Fleet had taken to forming a battle lattice that hugged the hemisphere of the planet. Whenever Admiral Yularen tried to manoeuvre around and prod for a weakpoint, the battle lattice would shadow them.
It was a stalemate.
Scout hoped a Republic victory at Columex would soon arrive, prompting Horgo Shive and Vorzyd to surrender. The battle must be over by now.
And now, Admiral Yularen had news for the General. Scout could only think of two reasons why, and a quick quiver from the Force told her she was correct.
âEither we assault Vorzyd immediately,â she started, âOr we are to withdraw.â
Admiral Yularen crossed his arms, âA Jediâs funny feeling?â
âNo sirââ Scout started, before thinking better of it, âWell⊠maybe a little.â
The Admiral regarded her with leonine eyes, âThat may be beyond me, but try not to undersell yourself, Commander. Know your strengths, youâll find yourself walking far. Come, letâs take this to the General.â
It was obvious Master Skywalker was expectant, from the tight smile he flicked at them. Anakin Skywalker was notoriously impatient, even more so when it was self-inflicted. As the commanding Jedi General of the battle group, even Admiral Yularen had to defer to himâand thus there was nothing stopping him from ordering an all out assault on the enemy positions.
Nothing, other than the fact that they were facing a Separatist battle lattice. The same tactic Anakin Skywalker had suffered greatly at the hands of, twice now. Obviously, Horgo Shive knew that too. Internally, a small part of Scout hoped his hesitation was also a symptom of their personal exchange only a scant few weeks ago.
âWe have an incoming transmission from Horgo Shiveâs flagship,â the Admiral informed bluntly.
Her stomach leapt. Incoming transmission? Does that mean heâs surrendering?
Master Skywalker shot her a brief glare, and Scout crushed her internal monologue just as swiftly.
âLetâs hear it,â the Jedi Knight replied calmly,
âPut it through, Lieutenant!â Yularen called.
Lieutenant Avrey, their resident chief comms officer, hastily saluted and fiddled with her console, prompting a holographic bust of a Muun commander to burst out of the forward dashboard. Horgo Shive sported an impossibly smug, self-satisfied smile that immediately tossed her hopes into doubt.
âGood day, General Skywalker,â The Muun commander spoke in a tone that suggested he was a victor speaking to the vanquished, âYou must have received the news by now. The Republic Senate had just extended an offer of ceasefire to the Confederacy. All fighting in the Near Perlemian is to end, effective immediately. I suggest we bring this affair to an end, and that you comply with your governmentâs wishes by lifting your blockade.â
With an effort Scout smoothed her expression into uncaring blandness, mirroring her Masterâs similarly emotionless expression. It was at this point that Scout wished she possessed Ahsokaâs empathic talents, so that she could peer into Master Skywalkerâs impenetrable poise for even a moment.
General Anakin Skywalker turned to face Admiral Yularen, and for a brief moment Scout felt like an intruder upon the silent conversation the two men shared.
Master Skywalker released an imperceptibly small breath, and turned back to their enemy, âWe will begin withdrawing our forces. No in-system shipping will be molested from my men from this point onwards, you have my word.â
â...Let me ask you this, Master Jedi,â Horgo Shive leaned forward, holding his chin with spindly fingers, âDo you believe your Senateâs vision of peace is attainable?â
âNo,â Master Skywalkerâs answer was swift and blunt, âNot against you Separatists.â
âEnlightening as always, you mystics,â Shive chuckled, before haphazardly cutting the connection.
Master Skywalkerâs shoulders lifted, and plunged down in an explosive sigh, âSo we lost.â
âThe lack of communications is concerning, and suggests great disarray,â Admiral Yularen noted, âBut our scoutships have been reporting signs of emergency jumps into nearby systems from the direction of Columex. I am afraid you may be correct, General.â
We lost. The greatestâlargestâfleet in the history of the Republic lost against the Separatists.
âStill, peace?â her Master muttered, âI must speak to the Council on this.â
âI will send a request for orders,â Admiral Yularen whirled around and marched back towards the Battle Room, with Master Skywalker close on his tail.
âTallisibeth,â said her Master, not even looking over his shoulderâas if in an afterthought, âHow many times do I have to tell you? Our thoughts create our reality. Cut it out.â
Her cheeks burned in shame, hating how her Master always seemed to be able to sense her true feelings. Was it the same for Ahsoka? Scout was doubtfulâMaster Kenobi probably wasnât as⊠inclement as Master Skywalker. A confused sense of envy rose in her. Would she prefer Obi-Wan Kenobi as her master?
In an unusual outburst of defiance, Scout unwisely decides to test her Masterâ âSpeaking from experience, Master?â
Anakin Skywalker froze, and she immediately knew she ought to be on her knees begging for forgiveness. But she didnât, and as the Chosen One slowly. creakily, turned around, Scout decided she would endure any punishment if she was able to get an answer out of him.
His glance down at her was severe, "The things I know that you don't, Padawan, would fill a Corellian spice freighter. Twice."
O-oh, okay.
â...Yes, Master.â
The Battle Room was inhabited by the holographic Jedi Council, including Master Kcaj and Master Kolarâwho had replaced Master Mundi and Master Koth respectivelyâalong with a dozen more front line Jedi, for an ad hoc strategy conference.
Impatient and insubordinate as always, Anakin Skywalker declaredâ âHow is it that I found out about this peace effort from a Separatist commanderâ?â the moment he stepped into the sensor range of the holoproj table.
âAnakin⊠must you?â Master Kenobi was audibly exasperated as Scout meekly followed in her Masterâs shadow. The moment her skin prickled from the holoproj scanning and inserting her form, Ahsoka noticed and gave a subtle wave.
Scout grinned, and waved back.
âWhat?â Anakin Skywalker asked, âWe lost. So just how badly did we lose? HQ must be regretting not having the Open Circle participate in the battle.â
âThatâs enough out of you, Skywalker,â Master Windu was grim and humourless, âMaster Rancisis has fallen.â
A sombre blanket fell over the meeting, and even Master Skywalker sobered upâ âHow?â
How did Oppo Rancisis fall? How did three Councilmembers lose their lives in the first year of the war?
âFrom what the survivors tell us,â Master Plo Koon said, âIt appears the Separatists unveiled a new superweapon, destroying both of Kuatâs dreadnoughts and much of the combined fleet.â
âAnd peace is the Senateâs answer?â Master Even Piell scowled, âDo they not realise that we are winning? Loss or no loss, we have still captured half of the Foundry, and our northern fleets had just liberated Dantooine and Ord Trasi. Not to mention our southern fronts are proceeding smoothly, with Knight Alrix on route to Vondarc as we speak.â
The diminutive Jedi Master gestured towards a tall, flinty woman dressed head to toe in stark white plastoid armour, not unlike a cloned troopersâ. Even an entire galaxy away, Scout still heard tales of the Jedi Knight from chit-chatting officers in the mess. It was said that the Coburn Plan was originally meant to be nothing more than a limited offensive entirely contained in the Colonies and Inner Rim, until the Emerald Banner Command leveraged its influence to expand the effort to encompass the entire Rimma Trade Route.
Most were pessimistic about the strategy. Even with both the Emerald Banner Fleet and embattled Night Hammer Fleet, the combined Separatist forces on the Rimma outnumbered Republic fleets three-to-one. That was, until Jedi Knight Rees Alrix took command and scored victory after victory every step of the way down the Rimma Trade Route, crushing numerically superior enemy fleets as it was only natural.
âItâs a matter of perspective, Master Piell,â Master Kenobi reasoned, âTo the citizens, we have just suffered the single largest defeat and loss of life since the New Sith Wars. Both the Senate and public are outraged, and demanding answers.â
Master Piell wasnât done; âThis could have been avoided if weââ
âTrust us, the Republic does not,â Master Yoda cut in mournfully, âNot after our failure at Christophsis, hm?â
âThey had Master Rancisis take command of the combined fleet,â Master Fisto pointed out.
Master Gallia, one of the few Councilmembers still present on Coruscant, shook her head, âThe Senate is demanding answers from High Command, and High Command is demanding answers from the Jedi Temple. They are blaming the defeat on Master Rancisisâ failure of command.â
Anakin Skywalker slammed his fists on the table, âThose chickenshit bastardsâ!â
âAnakin!â Master Kenobi snapped in a rare display of ire, âControl yourself! Remind yourself that you are no longer a Padawan.â
Scout looked away as her Master silently fumed.
âIncreasingly isolated, the Temple is,â Master Yoda lamented, âReturn to Coruscant, Master Ti, Master Kenobi, and Master Windu will.â
âMaster Windu as well?â Master Skywalker questioned, âWhat about the Bothans?â
âI was too late,â Master Windu shook his head, âThe Bothans have betrayed the Republic. Confidence says there had been a Separatist-backed coup on Bothawui. Regardless, they now side with the Separatists, allowing Dooku to circumvent Hutt Space.â
Bothawui. Home to the Bothans, whose intelligence-gathering skills were legendary. Information was their greatest currency, and already their assistance had made a difference against the Separatists. The loss of the Bothans made their defeat at Columex look trivial, even if it was not exactly mass media worthy..
Without the Bothan Spynet, Republic Intelligence would be hamstrung. While Scout had overheard that some clone intelligence units show promise, at this point there were still only a handful of them.
âI am afraid Lannik has been conquered, Master Piell,â Master Windu finished.
If Master Even Piell was at all moved by the news of his homeworldâs downfall, the stoic Jedi did not show it.
âBe that as it may, Master Yoda, I am unsure as to why my presence on Coruscant is necessary,â Master Kenobi admitted, âMy dislike for politics is no secret, and there is still a war to fight here.â
âStrategic Command has ordered all fleet elements to withdraw to the Mid-Outer Rim border in order to shorten the front,â Master Gallia informed, âAnd all taken worlds are to be evacuated immediately. Knight Skywalker, you are required to retreat to Lucazec and await further orders. Our instructions are to begin entrenching our gains in case the Separatists think light on the Senateâs proposal.â
âMaster Kenobi, you will not remain on Coruscant for long,â she continued, âI will naturally be overseeing the Templeâs role in the peace affairs, and I have chosen you to represent the Jedi during the peace summit, which has been decided to be on Onderon. Dealing with the Senate will be left to me.â
The Tholothian Jedi ended her statement with a small smile. Master Kenobi breathed out with a sheepish smile, as if thinking himself foolish for even suggesting anybody but Master Adi Gallia would be handling the fickle nature of Coruscanti politics. It was said Master Gallia presided over an impossibly vast personal intelligence network, and that she even had ties with pirate factions in the Outer Rimâthough Scout could not differentiate between truth and hearsay. This made her the go-to person for dealing with the political spheres the Jedi found themselves increasingly embroiled with.
Scout supposed it was only natural Master Yoda would choose Master Gallia to supervise the Jedi Orderâs duties during the peace summit.
âMay I know my objective?â Master Kenobi asked.
âFirst, represent the Jedi Order,â Master Gallia ordered, âLet me put this bluntly; our name has been dragged through bantha dung, and with each day that goes by, the respect the word âJediâ affords plummets through another level of Coruscant. Soon we will be approaching the Nine Hells themselves."
Even Master Skywalker winced as a ripple of disquiet shook the attending Jedi. Did she forget to mention that Master Gallia was an infamously sharp-tongued cynic? Scout knew for a fact that her lessons brought a not insignificant number of younglings to the edge of tears more than once.
âSecond,â she continued, âYou will be there to protect the Senatorial delegation. There has been no indication that either Count Dooku or General Tann will be attending, and there are fears this may be a foreshadowing to a Separatist trap.â
âDooku will not be so obvious.â
âNo,â Master Gallia agreed, âBut I have selected you because of your shared history with the lead delegate and sponsor of the peace initiative; Senator PadmĂ© Amidala. We do not need any more undue tension between the Temple and the Senate, wonât you say?â
âThe sponsor isâ is Senator Amidala?â Anakin Skywalker all but blurted out, almost⊠askance.
âWhy yes,â Master Gallia confirmed, âIt was quite a fiery speech. Iâd imagine thereâs now not a single soul in the galaxy who does not know her name; she had, after all, demanded peace and ridiculed the entire Senate in the same breath.â
âThat must have been quite the sight,â Master Kenobi brushed his beard, âThe young Senator has come far indeed.â
Master Gallia hummed noncommittally, âIs there a problem, Knight Skywalker?â
âNoââ Master Skywalker answered quickly; a bit too quickly, âNo problem at all, Master.â
Scout narrowed her eyes. There is something up with Master⊠but what is it? She was taken back to her days in the Jedi Temple as she observed the normally unflappable Jedi Knight shifting awkwardly as the discussion continued, as if dipping in and out of focus. Wanting to confirm something, Scout nervously peeled her lips open.
She discreetly nudged her Master, âWhoâs Senator Amidala, Master?â
âNobody important,â Anakin Skywalker looked mildly pained even as he said those words, âSheâs just the Senator from Naboo.â
The glimpse she caught of his expression as he turned back to the conference was like a sucker punch to her gut. Thatâs where Iâve felt this sensation! Scout was reminded of the times in her old clan hall when her fellow initiates would tease and badger each other on whatever hot topic had seized their attention that weekâusually when someone or the otherâs crush was exposed. Oh, their hall wardens always insisted on maintaining some level of standard, but the only thing that taught younglings was how to keep a secret.
Too bad Scout earned her nickname for a reason, and she was always on top of the latest gossipâmore often than not, she had already long known before some blabbermouth spilled the beans to everybody else.
Nevertheless, she had long learned that the go-to way of preserving your dignity when confronted was to either vehemently deny everything or feign ignorance, before looking away and pretending nothing happened. Every. Single. Time.
Except⊠this was the Chosen One sheâs accusing of having a childish crush⊠nah, no way. Youâre being absolutely ridiculous, Tallisibeth. Stop getting carried away. Didnât Master Gallia just mention that Senator Amidala knew Master Kenobi from beforehand? Anakin Skywalker was once Master Kenobiâs Padawan! Of course theyâd know each other! Master Skywalker must simply be pleasantly surprised by the familiar name.
âŠI think. Scout cannot recall an instance in which had ever been wrong before, but decided that the real world was much more complicated than the childish adventures her clan had in the safety of the Temple.
ââJoin Master Kenobi on Onderon,â she heard Master Plo Koon say as she tuned back into the conversation.
âDo you believe that is wise, Plo?â Master Saesee Tiin furrowed his leathery brows.
âI am unable to elaborate without complete confidence,â the Kel Dor stressed.
Master Kenobi shared a meaningful look with Master Tiin, before clearing his throat, âI concur with Master Plo. If his suspicions are true, then there is merit in him attending the summit.â
âAnd these suspicions cannot be disclosed here?â Master Windu crossed his arms.
âNot when it can potentially decide the outcome of the summit,â Master Tiin refused gruffly.
Hearing the taciturn Master Tiin backing his fellow Jedi Masters with such a severe statement visibly piqued the interests of more than a handful, as did Scoutâs burning curiosity. Considering how some nearby clone officers were perhaps involuntarily leaning closer to the conversation, however, Scout could understand why Master Plo was unwilling to speak. They werenât in the confines of the Temple; over half of the attending Jedi wereâlike her and Master Skywalkerâin the middle of prying ears and eyes. Whether it be in the Battle Rooms of warships or planetary command posts.
âIn that case,â Master Gallia mused, âYou can bring me up to speed later. Privately.â
Master Skywalker edged forward, as if in anticipation to speak, but reined himself in a split second later. Maybe heâs a little self-conscious? There were more than a handful of Jedi Knights at the tableâbut only Master Skywalker ever butted into a conversation between Masters. Not even Rees Alrix dared to draw attention to herself, despite her endless victories in the southern front.
On the other hand, that wasnât like Master Skywalker at all.
âIf that is allâŠâ Master Windu started.
âWaitâ!â that spurred Master Skywalker into action, âWith your permission, I would request that my Padawan and myself join Obi-Wan on Onderon.â
Scout snapped her head around in surprise. Okay, I wasnât expecting that.
âA reason, you have?â Master Yoda folded his hands atop the pommel of his cane.
âWellâŠâ her Master drew out, âLetâs just say that with the Perlemian cooling down, I wonât be of much⊠use, anymore.â
âWe can transfer you to another front if you wish, Skywalker,â Master Piell suggested, âPerhaps the south?â
Knight Alrixâs lips thinned, âWith all due respect, I do not need Skywalker of all people challenging my command. Rather than him, Iâd prefer a hundred more warships.â
Gratefulness and indignation tussled for control over Anakin Skywalkerâs expression as coughed, âAs⊠as Obi-Wan kindly reminded me, I have a Padawan now, and a responsibility for her education. Being on Onderonâaway from the warâwill do both Tallisibeth and Ahsoka some time away from the war. Jedi were supposed to be diplomats and peacekeepers, right? The summit will give them a chance to pivot away from soldiery and command.â
âI must say, that is well put, Anakin,â Master Kenobi drawled, a small smirk gracing his lips, âIf only all of your ideas could be this sound.â
âHey! I have my moments,â he protested, âBesides, if anything my presence will only reinforce the peace effort, right?â
The Hero With No Fear, supporting the peace negotiations? The HoloNet will have a field day with that information.
âSkywalker has a point,â Master Kit Fisto pointed out, âTwo Jedi Masters and Anakin Skywalker? That might just be enough to pull the Order back into relevance.â
âIâm inclined to agree,â Master Gallia said, âI believe this is enough for today⊠Skywalker, stay behind. I would speak to you.â
As the attending Jedi departed, the Battle Room dimmed once more as the blue glow dozens of holograms winked out of existence. Master Kenobi spared her a half-apologetic, half-reassuring look, as if saying âthanks for putting up with himâ before disappearing with an excitable Ahsoka in tow, who was clearly looking forward to their reunification. Scout would be lying if she said she wasnât eager to talk with someone her age again too. Well, the clones were her age⊠but that was like saying Kel Dorians counted their years the same way Twiâleks do.
âSkywalker,â Master Gallia began once the rest were gone, âMaster Yoda would have allowed it, but I am not so easily convinced. I will only sanction this on two conditions.â
Master Skywalker straightened, âIâm listening, Master.â
âFirst, obey Master Kenobi and Master Plo,â she ordered in such a severe tone Scout could only wince, âThe galaxyâs eyes will be on Onderon, and I donât want your add ill repute of troublemaking to the list of things that can go wrong. Secondâand this goes for you too, Padawanâkeep a close eye on both our friends and enemies. Do not allow anybody, even those who would claim to be our allies, to disrupt the proceedings. If you must get rid of them, do so, discreetly.â
âLoud and clear, Master Gallia,â Master Skywalker grinned, âYou can count on us. If you would allow me to askâŠâ
âWell?â the Jedi Master raised an eyebrow.
He wetted his lips, âWill this peace initiative actually succeed?â
Master Adi Gallia scoffed derisively, âOf course not. Were you listening at all, Skywalker? Watch for both friends and enemies. There is no shortage of both who are trying really hard to be funny.â
Scout really wanted to see her Masterâs expression then, but in the darkness of the Battle Room she could no longer pierce through the shade crossing his face. Not for the first timeâand definitely not the lastâshe once again envied Ahsokaâs empathic abilities.
âI see,â Master Skywalker said softly, âThank you, Master.â
He moved to cut the connection, fingers hovering over toggleâwhen Master Gallia stopped him with a smile that didnât quite reach her eyes.
âOne more thing, Skywalker.â
Both master and Padawan froze, slowly deciphering the odd tone as they met the Jedi Masterâs stare. It was then, when Scout, at a single glance, realised the great ravine that lay between normal Jedi and a member of the High Council. She felt the weight of Master Galliaâs stare, and grazed an agelessness and unfathomable depth of knowledge behind her cobalt eyes.
Oh, there was no shortage of discourse and speculation about the Councilmembers in the Jedi Temple. After all, they were famous, renowned Masters of great stature the likes of Master Yoda, Master Windu, and Master Plo. Yet, Scout realised with a clarity that there was never much mention about the unassuming Councilmembers; for every word of admiration for Obi-Wan Kenobi, there was no mention of Adi Gallia or Even Piell. It was as if they were ghostsânothing more than beings who occupied a chair.
What was the difference between them and any other Jedi Master?
And Scout finally understood that symptom of anonymity, when she wracked her brain to Nine Hells and back and still came up short on who Jedi Master Adi Gallia was. Because for all the Tholothian looked the age of Master Aayla Secura or even Anakin Skywalker himself, Scout knew in her gut that she was anything but. Tholothians were ageless.
In Master Yodaâs eyes, you saw the weight of uncountable aeons, of history then came and went from living memory, left only in dusty scrolls and hidden archives. That was his knowledge and wisdom; that of centuries of experience, observing the galaxy change around him while he remained timeless.
Master Galliaâs was different. Herâs was a piercing gaze that saw right through you, that could dig out your darkest secrets. Herâs was the knowledge thatâd bades you to ask not âhow much does she know?â but âhow did she find out?â Maybe, just maybe, the rumours that Master Gallia was the kingpin of a galaxy-spanning intelligence network was more true than any self-respecting Jedi would like to admit. Maybe the Bothans weren't so great a loss, after all...
Councilmembers were Councilmembers for a reason, Scout reminded herself coldly. There was an even greater rift between Councilmember and Jedi Master than Jedi Master and Jedi Knight.
âYes, Master?â
Scout knew she was not the only one, because she swore a hint of trepidation crossed the Chosen Oneâs voice.
âLook out for our dear Senators, will you?â Master Gallia asked sweetly, âOnderon is an infamously dangerous planet after all. Keep close to them⊠ah, but not too close, hm? I am afraid Master Kenobi is far more tactful than I am.â
Though Master Adi Gallia continued to smile kindly, her eyes spoke a most un-Jedi-like language of warning, and a promise of merciless redress in case of failure. Anakin Skywalker stiffened up like a boy who had his hand caught in the cookie jar, as if divine retribution to smote him right then and there.
âI⊠I understand, Master,â the Chosen One bowed his head, âI will keep them safe. Master Kenobi and Master Plo will be present as well, so I believe there will be no threats at all.â
Master Gallia narrowed her eyes, hair tendrils swaying menacingly, âThat is exactly what I fear, Skywalker. Master Kenobi and Master Plo are far too lenient and forgiving. Stay on your toes, because I am not.â
And just like that, the Jedi Master came and left like a thunderous whirlwind, leaving the two Jedi alone in the middle of dozens of officers respectfully pretending they didnât just hear the Chosen One get his dignity carved out with a spoon.
â...Tallisibeth.â
Scout flinched, âYes, Master!â
Master Skywalker pivoted on a heel and marched out, âIâm keeping your secret, so how about you keep mine?â
âWhat secret?â
âJust what I like to hear,â Anakin Skywalker chirped, though Scout could not tell if it was forced.
Well, she was only half-lying in any case. I hope.

I believe it has been suggested several times that he has an actively unremarkable face and presence.

I hope so, we'll see how this skilled author takes it, personally I'm hoping they grow enough 'brain' cells that they do survive. We'll see.
Straven
I'd say he'd try to avoid that end result, after all if that end comes about his group will also fall and the sith empire will rise instead. As one that heavily gutted its attempts to whittle and weaken both sides I don't doubt he'd be singled out for death.

His role in the peace conference was probably mentioned but it sounds like Scout and Anakin zoned out.
tibbish
He let Tann grab all the glory so she'd have a better shot at the big seat in the Senate (politics...) but anyone paying attention knows that win was the result of his leadership. As you say I don't think he really wants the limelight anyways so this is how he prefers it too. He'll definitely be on some powerful people's radar now if he wasn't before though. Notice how a lot of those business people who build the ships were coming to him first before voting a certain way? He is already de facto recognized as either a mover and shaker in his own right OR someone who has pull with those people.

Great chapter! I am really curious if the story will follow canon that Anakin will turn Darth Vader or will Rain try to prevent the Jedi downfall and rise of the Empire.
William M.
Ah, right! She pushed (successfully) to alter the campaign so there wouldn't be an invasion of her homeworld. She still cares about her parents you see.

In legends Gallia is well known as one of the Jediâs strongest negotiators and diplomats. She plays such a role in the stark hyperspace war and the other skirmishes leading up to the clone wars
Andrew
I donât recall the exact details, but has something to do with researching her family. The reason for the change is how the battle of Christophsis played out differently. Originally Ashoka would have met Anakin and Obiwan during the battle, but Rains interference caused a butterfly effect which resulted in Obiwan choosing her at the temple.

I liked that they are keeping their theories about Rain a secret from the rest of the council. It's really smart and gives the Jedi some hope of surviving.

It's rather curious how things are all being set up for the Peace Conference on Onderon. Considering how he was he ultimate architect of the Confederate victory at Columex it's somewhat surprising that Rain still isn't even mentioned or known about as a key commander for the Confederacy. Then again, Rain probably prefers it that way as with others like Tann and Trench taking the credit for things, Rain is able to continue operating in relative obscurity, known only to a select few. After all, if Count Dooku and Darth Sidious are only aware that you're a competent commander with some political connections, and a whole lot of luck and backing from more well known figures like Tann, then you're less likely to get assassinated in the dark of the night. Still, I think Rain will have an interesting time on Onderon when he eventually meets with Plo Koon again, and runs into Anakin and Padme, as Anakin will be especially annoyed at Rain for having cost him so many times. But that's something to look forward to as Rain likely will have a conundrum to deal with, as Rain's foreknowledge is at least enough to know about Anakin's connection to Padme. Seeing the Jedi playing politics like this is certainly a novel sight. It's not often that they're portrayed being so politically savvy, caring about their PR and also knowing how to maneuver in order to get what they want politically. Then again, seeing how you're going with a mix of Legends and Disney canon, what with the mention of the New Sith Wars, I suppose it only makes sense as the Jedi have institutional knowledge of how to play politics with the Senate and now that they have been thrust into partly political roles it only makes sense that some of them are beginning to play the game in a way like this. Now that they're entering into politics, though, as their own sort of distinct side, I'm curious as to what their political end game is. So far it seems as if the Jedi are merely trying to tread water politically, keeping their heads above water but not having any concrete goals aside from keeping their images clean. They still seem to be in favor of the war, after all, or at least realize that the peace initiative will inevitably fail, which makes me wonder when they're going to realize that there are other options available to them politically. I think once the prisoner exchange occurs with Barriss that things will be stirred up in the Jedi Temple, as Barriss will offer a more unorthodox voice to the mix. Not traitorous or treacherous, but just counter to the prevailing mood at the moment, and with solid evidence to back herself up. With how Master Plo Koon and Master Saesee Tiin seem to be ready to reveal the big secret Rain told them, there's probably going to be a shakeup soon in the Order. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Bontieri is going to have a fit at being so close to what seems like a black hole of trouble magnets. Time to load up on lucky talismans, triple-check and idiot-proof all systems, throw every idiot out of space-lock and most certainly step out of the bed with the right foot forward. And if anyone manages to see a black cat walk across your spaceship lane, just call everything off and nuke the whole planet from orbit.

Ooh, nice

The conversation's a secret, else the future arcs will be no fun ;)

I guess we won't be seeing the conversation between Rain, Bariss and Tann. Or will we, in the next chapters?

I really like the build up to the peace summit meeting where all our favorite characters will finally meet.

Is that so? It's honestly been so long I can't remember. I'll do a quick check and rectify the issue if that's the case. Thanks.

Great chapter! Iâm definitely liking the perspectives from the republicâs side. Though my one question is â wasnât two council members wiped out on Christophsis? (Koth & Mundi)

I don't think her personality was ever elaborated on in legends. In a rare turn of events, most info on her comes from Disney Canon material. Apparently she believes information is worth more than a lightsaber in almost every conceivable scenario, so she became the unofficial spymaster and political liaison of the Jedi Order.
Mad Max
Oh, by canon, I mean Legends as well. Wookiepedia seems to have her as the spymaster you depicted her as. Solid chapter nontheless

ooo, things are building up quite well. I can't wait for Skywalk and Rain meet.

Adi Gallia didn't do shit in Canon. The moment she appeared in TCW she got merked by Savage.
Mad Max
Was Adi Gallia always so... pragmatic in canon?
