Totally agree. It makes no sense for them to just fold like that. And now, in front of everyone, there are acts of a tyrant of going and threatening anyone against them. Liv being called out in the end like that. I hope they actually have a plan behind the scenes to justify why they gave up like that.

Honestly disappointed with the lack of pushback. Honestly the king being able to change the charter at will basically means they have to do what he says with no guarantees of any rights. He could tomorrow decide to conscript all of them with this precedent and the fact that so many people who are all taught politics, many of whom are nobles, either didn’t understand this or didn’t care seems ludicrous to me. It isn’t like the king could force them to accept it either even absolute monarchs rule through consent and again many of them are nobles and together they provide an essential service to the country.

It’s weird for so many people to give up power like that to a new untested king without even trying to resist him.

I just realized. Liv spent a while learning Guild History and Law (testing into Advanced for it even!) Why is it not coming up here? For instance, Genevieve may be Guild Mistress, but that role is completely new. For example, the bylaws could have something about Journeymen must be first and foremost responsive to their chosen Professor. So clearly Jurian or someone could just say, "Actually I need Brodbeck for a task," and negate the whole thing. It would feel weird that a Guild that has existed and deals with so many nobles doesn't accumulate any such legal detritus (the whole reason the King claimed he is instituting his changes). Just because Genevieve has a new title now, doesn't mean it is enshrined in Guild law what it can do or who must answer to it in what way.

For me the biggest element is that we don't see any moves on the part of Jurian or Loredan to counteract this. They have had a day to plan, and there response is to allow it to be put to a vote by the freshly bribed, no counter proposal, no legal wrangling, just allow members to be bribed, threatened, then vote, with a hostile and aggressive party watching. Obviously several members of the guild, especially those in line for the succession should have pressed for something, whether it was inheritance rights, more words, more lands something, instead the king gains the ability to appoint a guild head, and gives up... NOTHING, the word was already the guild's and was supplied by Jurian. Either there are machinations we can not see happening off screen, that are unmentioned, unhinted, et cetera, or else it feels VERY poorly done. Further, if the guild charter is being so changed, then the guild members must and should have the option to resign, on the simple basis that the terms are not what they were. Somehow Benedict manages to massively tax the merchants with tariffs, sets up an army loyal only to himself, which weakens the nobles, and takes over the mages guild... with no push back visible. That would be a feat from a king long in power, at the height of his abilities, but for Benedict, newly come to the throne, it seems all but madness.

Hmm. I'm surprised there's so little Caspian can do here. I thought a man of his age and standing would be better connected, even if his opponent is the king. Unsurprising that Liv spoke out; somebody had to do it. But damn if she isn't blunt. I would love to see a courtier or a charismatic individual able to play politics and wordplay expertly. It's something we've been missing from the mages guild.

What's that saying? "Three may keep a secret if two are dead." Liz is telling too many people about Luc...

ya well...its the norm. even 60 chapters ago, anything that has been established for a life or centuries is easily destroyed in days and "weeks". all to move the plot along.

Deathly_God

I don't know... For such a customs-oriented culture that's being written, 2 days seems awfully quick for anyone to sway. And wouldn't the vote have to be to amend the charter? Currently, any abstained votes is going to the reformist group, not the Nays. Seems like a pretty big gap to me.

Dreamysyu

Honestly, at this point I want Ractia to take over their country. Make them all slaves if they want it so much.

Tarrim

Yeah staying puts her too much under the king's authority. Get out and head north get ready for what is coming. She will almost certainly have to head into the foundry rift depths to shut this down.

John Koor

Oof.

Well, time to dodge some questions, learn a new word and leave.
