You have perfectly described Gerad with that last sentence. 😂 One thing about pulling low-source cards from the Mind Home, though: source cost only matters when you block from your hand. If you take the hit (as this contest demands) and it strips cards from your Mind Home, then it's 1 card for 1 damage regardless of the cost. That's why it's advantageous to block with your hand when dueling.

I'm not even sure that Gerad needed to cheat on this one, he could've just removed all the lowest-source cards from his mind home while he was taking them out and he'd already have way better odds than Hull. But hey, when you're the Prince who is always right why not take some satisfaction of a punk-ass who insulted you?

You're right that I played a little fast and loose on the archer, good catch! The idea was that the friend (Losum) swapped out the arrows when shooting at Hull to up the damage. A bit of a cheat from a strict card perspective, I admit! As for 2-3 damage being lethal outside a duel... it could be under the right circumstances, sure, but I'm blanking on whether I ever established that conclusively. If you've got an example from earlier in the book that comes to mind easily, please let me know! I'd like to maintain consistency in the rules even if I occasionally fudge them a little for narrative purposes. 😉 And I'm glad to hear about it when chapters don't hit right for folks, so don't be shy letting me know. I value everyone's feedback and hope to keep making the book better. You're awesome just for being here with me on Patreon.

And Then There Was None

I'm afraid this is the first chapter that I didn't like, because it broke the established rules. Two to three damage is established as incredibly lethal: A direct hit from an Elven Archer is only one damage. There's no way the serving boy could survive this. The same goes for this duel. We see a Human Archer back in chapter 3 and its not capable of doing 2 damage, let alone different amounts of damage in two attacks. The dual would be easily fixable: Use cards that explicitly can do variable damage. Maybe human archers upgraded to uncommon can focus for one damage or devote for two? Even better if we'd seen the card before so it could be text visible. I'm less sure what to do with the serving boy.
