I actually think something terrible is going to happen to Esmi at some point. Probably not during Hull's upcoming visit to the Demon Rift, but I get the feeling she's marked for death.

Kris Boxall

Okay people need to calm down about win loss ratios and look at this from a character perspective, Esmi is the most experienced then Basil then Hull it’s not surprising Hull has the most losses and Esmi the least, also she did lose against the Prince once

Sharrif

Esmi earned her wins. The quality of the deck matters, but so do one’s dueling skills. Calling her a Mary Sue is like calling Basil a Marty Stu because when has he ever lost either? Not to mention, saying Hull doesn’t have a big goal is unfair and dishonest. He has clearly said he wants to improve the Lows and make life better for ALL the people. He even wants to take out Hestorus so there’d be someone better in place - which arguably would be him, narratively speaking (both as the son, and as an evolution from being the Big Man). In contrast, Basil’s goals are… much more narrowsighted.

Great chapter!

She's actually beat him like 3 to 5 times if you account for her being the first to complete the Generals real combat tests (she was literally first in every test in the camp). She has beat him twice in direct combat. Once in the arena and Once during training camp before the twin duels when it was one v one.

Agreed she has surpassed a Mary sue in my book. At this piont she is just the authors dex ex machina for this series to fix all the other plot hole problems that are popping up. Also I'm surprised people haven't realized at this piont that this story really isn't a 2 main character story. Without a doubt Basil is the main character. Hull is just there for backstory and world building and is in no way the main character. He is for sure Basil’s side kick. I mean come on man, we are in book 2 and hull still doesn't have a big goal. Basil wants to become king but what's hulls goal. Fix the Lows? What then? Help Basil right, just like a side kick. It's pretty disappointing since hull is by far my favorite but to anyone who's following his story it's definitely a side story not the main.

I disagree. It feels on brand for Hull, in a fit of pique when Badgou is questioning his decisions, to let it slip. As to the point of them always winning, yeah I guess when you count the wins and losses it turns out that way, but to me personally with all the discussion and fretting it doesn’t feel that way. Also, when did Esmi defeat Gerald twice? I don’t think those two on one dues should count

The blindside in this chapter was set up so well. I was really concerned for Basil. I really dislike the dwarves now 😡

Liam Andrews

Dou you understand that? Dou —> Do

Myrdin

Yes, but at this point Esmi is becoming a Mary Sue who never loses or makes any mistakes. She even won twice against Gerad who has a superior deck. And Basil has never lost anything as well (other than against Esmi), has had 0 drawbacks, was given tons of free staff. And Hull who is actually struggling the most and giving the most effort, is always the sacrificial lamb who fucks things up. It is getting annoying as hell

RainbowPhaze

It's an honest mistake and it all turned out well in the end, barely. Also, I'm gratified to see Coal To Diamonds' effect. :P

In all fairness, Esmi is pretty much the only one who could have won that fight. Hull would absolutely have been spanked.

Hull: Ahh all the potential problems have solved... Wait a second.

Travis Smith

Its not something he would of known to avoid.

Myrdin

I hate that Hull was made into a moron just for the sake of this storyline that feels forced af. When it comes to things like keeping his mouth shut he should be street smart about it. But no, for some reason it is him that has to do something so moronic rather than a naive noble like Basil. And Esmi and Basil continue their undefeated streak of a pair that can do no wrong.

Sharrif

Dammit, Hull.
