When we found out about Lily in season 6 they told us she was sick, Giuseppe sent her away, she faked her death and came back for them one night after she turned to take them away but she was a ripper and was scared to hurt them. That's even why Stefan is a ripper, he got that from her.

This season is so underrated and doesn't get as much love from the fans as it should since a lot people stopped watching after Nina left, but it has a really good storyline.
