My sincere apologies, Mia. I suppose this is a case where what I thought happened and what actually happened was skewed. This is my fault and I have no excuse. I also wanted to do an OSL effect on this piece. I try to practice a new technique every model in an attempt to master it. I don't look back on a model and fondly remember how good it looked or how much people liked it, only what new techniques I learned or used. It's probably the only real joy I get from painting, but it makes every model take much longer and be mentally taxing, which is why I paint so rarely, now. The pumpkin golem was my first use of a wet pallete and wet-blending on a model. The dancer was my first attempt at trying to make a more 3d effect using colors and shading for skin tones as well as non-metallic metal--even though I only used it on the small gold bangles. I was going to try my hand at doing a sky-earth non-metallic metal effect on the cyber angel, but that was in the prime of my printer going haywire and fell through. This time I really wanted to practice OSL, as I have never done it to any significant degree: only little things like glowing eyes or chests, and only in a single color. To really practice it, I decided I would need a large base with several light sources. I spent several days looking for an appropriate free base and mushrooms, but couldn't find anything that I liked. Google found those. They were perfect, so I bought them.

As somewhat hypocritical as it may seem, I actually agree with you, Richard. I would prefer the painting contest to just be of the minis in question with either no base or the decorated base provided. However, past experiences showed me that if I wanted to win, I would probably have to use a base, and a damned good one. I only ever wanted to win one time, and I really need it to be this time for reasons I will not go over. That's it. I might paint more stuff in other contests for funsies, but I'm not going to enter them, just show them off... and maybe go over how I did them. I have nothing against how Mia wants to run the contest: it's her contest after all. I think it's a valid way to run a contest. She's totally right that it can create some really beautiful works. It just isn't my preference.

This has been asked before, and I permit it as long as it complements the main model. Painting contest entries may be a diorama with files from any creators. It allows for some really incredible and creative entries. Entry #8 also has really beautiful scenery. :)

The submission by Zaxus Lanterus is certainly well done and I'm not trying to say that anything about this submission is unethical, but I wonder if the rules should state that contest submissions should include only content from M3DM. Although it is painted beautifully and the colour choices are wonderful, using a base designed by Printable Scenery might give an unfair advantage... I believe we should have the freedom to create our own bases but they should be home-made and not include stl files from other creators.

Hi, there! #22 is mine. So, first off, that base is from Printable Scenery, but it isn't free and had to be purchased, although It comes with 7 different bases of various sizes. It is also supportless, and was only 9.95 usd, which isn't bad at all. They have a lot of cool stuff, and it's pretty much all supportless. Also, that item was especially nice because I could split it and grab a ton of scatter terrain off of it, like shroom clusters and rocks I just made an Imgur album here that goes over the process! http://imgur.com/a/ra4ebCD
