✸ Feb. Secret Sketches 1 + Favorite Things! ✸

This isn't a hefty batch of sketches, but that mostly because I can't show you too much of the ARDEN HIGH: King Cheer cast list yet...not until the designs have been approved and finalized. For now, two screenshots of peoples' abdomen and legs will have to suffice. I wanted to give you any peeks that I could!
I've been busy with life organization stuff the last couple weeks; various appointments, meetings, preparing to vacation next week, doing my taxes 😵 (Dad if you are reading this....thank you again), and setting up to begin King Cheer. So it's been considerably less creation-centric work, thus not much visuals to show. But I think what I do have this go-around packs a punch!

Since I'm often asked, I thought I would reiterate here that all of my sketching on procreate is done with the trust built-in 6b pencil. That's what I also used for all the linework of ARDEN HIGH: Twelfth Grade Night, and will continue to use for book two, King Cheer.

I guess this is a semi-newsletter/blog post because I also wanted to sneak in my list of lovely things I have been enjoying over the course of a month:
-dusty lavender colored clothes ( I just got a hoodie in this color and I swear I haven't taken it off)
-Yuireu유이르 on youtube, she does quiet low-key vlog lifestyle videos in Kyoto
-sourdough bread in the toaster (topped with nut butter and fruit, or avocado and an egg!)
-comfortable and unique chairs. just well designed chairs that also are functional
-turmeric/golden lattes
-having lots of pillows on my bed. This is new for me. Literally I changed my bedding situation and it shook my world. here is a picture.
-using tumblr again! holy shit! This was a game changer. I made a completely new one after not being on for years, and it's such a calm and comfortable place now. I feel like my tumblr has become my little happy place.
-Having a morning routine. I used to be all over the place with this, but I finally found something I like and look forward to every day.
-Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. I'm starting the next book in the series, Authority, but haven't gotten very far yet! I rewatched the movie recently now that I have read the book, and it's so interesting to see how they changed things. (Have you read this series?)
-Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. I listened to the audiobook which was also read by her. </3 So so so good.
-Valentine's aesthetics!!! that shit is just yum yum delicious!!

Hi Jamie! Nice to see you're doing well, it's always nice to read your posts 😊 As of lately, I've really started drawing traditionally again, and have been experimenting with painting and just creating what feels good to me, especially in drawing tattoo flashes and customs. Sometimes it's hard to not get wrapped up in expectations from an online audience, but letting that go feels real good from time to time! And I've also read the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer, they're my favourite! Authority can be a little tough to get through in some parts, but it's really worth it. I think Acceptance is my favourite of the three, but it's hard to pick one honestly, because the story ties together so well. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the books once you've finished them all! Oh, and if you like this trilogy, you should also give "Borne" (also by Vandermeer) a go! It's such a beautiful story 🖤 Have a great week 🦐✨

Hey Jamie! I’m glad that even tho it’s not been as creative as a time for you right now that you’ve had time to really do some things for yourself! So excited to be apart of the journey of the second Arden High book! I wish I were as productive as you! I’m a creative mind stuck in a 10-6 warehouse job where if I’m caught drawing/doodling on the clock it’s a no no. My favorite song right now is Silk Chiffon by Muna feat. Phoebe Bridgers and it honestly gets me through the week! I’ve been playing loads of Pokémon Legends Arceus and that’s also been saving me. Can’t wait to hear from you/post again. So lovely and good!! And YES for the return of Tumblr, back to the good ol' days! 🌻 I have been learning to play the guitar!!!!! Looking forward to play a whole song by summer (let's hope so)!! 🤞 Can and will highly suggest reading Stargazing by Jen Wang, playing Everdell (fave boardgame!!), and teaching my chonky cat to be held in my arms! (it's ok Tabata, it's a process, you foolish cat scared of heights)- and tomorrow is my bday!!!!!! So yeah, a truly wonderful start of February!!! ✨ Much heart shaped energy to all of youssss 💓

Hanna I wish you knew how I fondly use your washi and your stationary and think of you every single time like "wow im so happy I'm friends with this person so far across the globe". It's genuinely every *single* time I use them (and it never gets old). That is so awesome that you get to re-imagine your studio once again--I hate the moving part, but love the organizing and setting up/starting fresh part. :~D

Oh boy you bet my heart skipped a beat when I saw some little Hannakin mush butts and washi pals make an appearance on your Hobonichi planner page (waaah! <3). This planner/diary/sketchbook with cute stuff stuck in and occasional sketchies and notes is such a vibe, honestly! As for me, I've been enjoying setting up a super sweet new studio space (moving house twice in one year; do not recommend! However the the new space is even better than the last, and I'm really relishing making my work/art space so cosy and precious, it's a delight!)

P.S. Have you ever heard of the Spice House? They make a Tuscan Bread Dip seasoning that is absolutely glorious with sourdough. 50/10 would recommend forever. When I don't have time to make the actual bread dip, I just spread some butter on sourdough toast and sprinkle the seasoning on top. PERFECT late-night snack.

I got a new computer and screen (my first good ones) and I'm kind of obsessed with it??? it's tiny like a playstation but it packs a punch, idk how I used to live without an ssd. I started doing artistic rollerskating again this month (after being "on a break" since 2020) and I'm so happy that I don't seem to have lost many abilities, and the kids that used to be in my class are huge and grown up now! went to a peruvian-chinese restaurant this week that was amazing and gorgeous, and I'll be watching the new Guillermo del Toro movie this week,which I'm excited about. love catching up with your sketches as always 💜

I’m currently obsessed with learning about neuro divergence + autism / spectrum + connecting with the ND community online. ++ I’m super die hard in love with sourdough bread :’) there’s a local person that makes the dreamiiest SD bread, I weep. Watching folks on twitch streams is so calm and neat sweet awesome sauce inspiring to work along with during my days… maybe I’ll start one eventually? Ouhhhh 🥺🙏🏼❤️🩹 love to you JG! <3

Always lovely to see your secret sketches! I especially love the vibe of your Hobonichi planner. And these character screenshots are really exciting to see. Some of my favorite things recently have been matcha lattes, thrifted sweaters, and my favorite color has been seafoam green. i haven't read anything recently, but i have Mushroom Rain pre-ordered, so im very much looking forward to checking it out once in comes in the mail :)
