I watched a few interviews with Jon Bernthal who plays Shane and he said they tried out a few different endings to this episode one of which was at the stand off Rick throws his gun away and says I'm unarmed Shane pointing his gun at Rick then after Rick stabs Shane he reanimates and Rick grabs Shane's gun to shoot zombie Shane but finds Shane's gun didn't have bullets in. Meaning that Shane never intended to kill Rick, he was pushing Rick to kill him to make him step up and change in order to be able to protect Lori and Carl in the new world.
