Perfect Blue, like most Satoshi Kon films, is back from the 90's when everyone HEARD of anime trending, but--since it was all on tape/disk, and only the core fans knew what to watch--nobody could see any except for the foreign-films playing arthouse theaters, which tended to be a little...artsier than the standard TV everyone can now see on disk and streaming. And thus considered themselves "experts" on anime, despite seeing only a weird side fringe from art directors who wanted to prove they didn't work for TV. If any fan nags you see Kon's "Paprika", run for your life.
