🕑 Added 2019-08-21 22:28:12 +0000 UTCHey everyone! I’ve been hard at work for those last few weeks, fixing bugs, finishing up scenes, and generally running out of time. The alpha is out, finally, although I still had to cut it somewhat, and there are going to be at least two more weekly releases with all the cut content.
But one thing that keeps haunting me is that I spend an inordinate amount of time on dialogue renders. I think most of you are familiar with the way dialogues are usually done in VNs: you have your blurry background, and then there are character sprites appearing over it, with a couple of predefined emotions and/or states. Those of you who played my game may have noticed that I generally shy away from this approach.
Now, I still think that making unique renders for almost all major dialogues allows me to present characters much better than just reusing the same sprites over and over again. But it is a huge time sink. But I think it’s sorta worth it. But I don’t really know.
To illustrate, I took are a couple of scenes from the latest version (on the left) and made a quick mockup of how those same scenes would look in the sprite mode (on the right). Right click and open image in a new tab to see it in full res.
So this is a question to you, my patrons and followers (yes,this poll is going to be totally open, but I can still separate patron and non-patron votes in the end). Would you prefer background+sprite approach if it means more content in general, as in, more writing and more events, or do you think that unique renders are worth it?

The main issue about unique renders is the game size. It can make the game go from some a few hundred megas to a few gigabytes. So I'm in for unique scenes for the lewd parts and for some key plot events that will help explain the story and/or define the characters personalities. All the other parts a simple VN style is enough.

You're right, poor camera angle for the fourth pic's background. And the sprites need to be adjusted, even those that I already use are somewhat inconsistent, will get to it when I have some free time.

I definitely prefer the unique renders. The sprite method isn't that noticeable for scenes one and three, but it's very obvious for two (clearly), and scene four Rae looks about four feet tall in the sprite version – she's petite, but not *that* short. And look at her on the left, who could say no to that face?
