I thought he was just as Irish as some of those who participated in the 1798 rebellion, he just took the opposite view to them and considered himself British rather than Irish? He was born and raised in Ireland after all, although seemed to be protestant ascendancy like many others involved in the rebellion? Let me know your thoughts
