1940s-Frank Sinatra 1950s-Elvis Presley 1960s-The Beatles 1970s-Bee Gees 1980s-Michael Jackson These icons weren’t just popular. They didn’t just sell millions of records. They changed the culture. Buddy Holly was more talented than Elvis. So was Chuck Berry. They influenced more musicians and songwriters. They didn’t change the culture. Bill Haley did “Rock Around The Clock” which predates Elvis. Haley was really good, but he looked like an uncle. He was balding and in his 30s. Rock and roll needed a young, sexy, wild thing. Enter Elvis. Pre-Army, he was gregarious and had the sneer. He had the looks and there was an element of danger there that many girls and women found very attractive. Yet he also was a southern gentleman who said “ma’am” and “sir”. He was far from perfect, but he’s still the King of Rock and Roll. My Dad idolized Elvis the same way I idolized The Beatles growing up. As a kid I remember hearing those Elvis records. To this day, I love that slap back echo from the 1950s. And I actually like his later stuff, too, including this one.

Yes! Probably my favorite Elvis song! the little toots or blows (had to look this up for myself) of the horn section are called "stabs". To me, this was the era when Elvis was less rock n roll and definitely had that country vibe and you never knew when he would go full-on gospel with his vocals. Also his stage presence keeps the performance laid back and intimate even among the massive audience. Just a master at the height of of his powers: confident, controlled and calm (even if little bit sweaty)
