Amber There is another ending, where once Roy goes into the spaceship, they show him inside and he looks up at the interior and becomes very emotional. I have it on a DVD, I wish they would show THAT version on line somewhere! It's an amazing moment and don't understand WHY that wasn't the ending they used.

Them's fight'n words! 😁 He has a number of amazing movies to pick from: E.T., Jaws, The Goonies, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, and Schindler's List come to mind. I'd also add "Band of Brothers" miniseries to that list as he was an executive producer along side Tom Hanks.

She and I bonded over love of aliens, Bigfoot, El chupacabra. 😆 I still have a mug that she brought me when she took a little trip to Vegas and drove with her friends up to Area 51! I just gifted her a month membership because you watched this. I hope can convince you to watch Mars Attacks so she will get a chance to watch that as well! 👽🛸🖖

Great reaction.🥹👌You can see the profound influence on film in this genre like "Independence Day" (1996) with Will Smith that included multiple "easter eggs" in homage to this film like the creeping shadow of the alien ship moving across the surface of the moon and earth or the "welcome wagon" helicopter using the same sequential lights to communicate to the aliens before being blasted.🤦♂️🤣Thank you Amber and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.🙏

This was such a great, classic movie and a great re-watch! I know I saw it back then, but not sure I saw it in the theater. Towards the end, where they seemed to be playing a musical game, it reminded me of the electronic game Simon from the late 70s (that it seems they still sell on Amazon!). It had 4 colored quadrants, and it would flash a sequence of colors and you had to match the sequence to move on. The sequences got longer and more complex as you went on. For a funny take on alien invasions, you might like 'Mars Attacks!' (1996). Also, for shorter (not movie length) laughs you should check out the 'Close Encounter' skits from SNL with Kate McKinnon (and guest host Ryan Gossling).

You have to imagine seeing the mothership rise up above the mountain for the first time on a theater screen. It. was. awesome.

First I'll say that when this movie came out everybody knew those 5 musical notes and we heard them all over the place. Second, I think you have the wrong Idea about the returnees. They weren't abducted. The pilots of flight 19 were lost at sea in the bermuda triangle with no trace, so the idea is they were rescued somehow by these aliens while not aging. Barry the boy was taken but he was returned unharmed and was never scared. Roy gets chosen to go with them because he had the close encounter and was curious about them.

Another space epic from this era that I think you'll enjoy but doesn't get a lot of attention is "Starman" with Jeff "The Dude" Bridges. A star studded cast, and FULL of heart and mystery.

Saw this in the theater. Love this for so many reasons.... Using the "Thomas guide " maps, I had to learn them as a hot air balloon pilot and crew chief. The nagging feeling trying to recognize something in your subconscious and no idea what it is, this movie helped me work through identifying the ability to know things about people and passed away people when I had no reference... That sounds weird but this movie helped.

if you remember watching Jaws way back when in the early days of your reactions, richard dreyfuss (roy) was the oceanography expert Hooper that helped hunt the shark During the making of Jaws, dreyfuss found out Spielberg was writing close encounters and wanted to star in it the mother of Barry (the little boy who was abducted) played the mother from A Christmas Story (and you've seen that if you remember) Fun fact: the young boy who played Barry is from my home state of Georgia! the french guy is a man named francois truffaut, who was a New Wave director in this period of time (the mid-late 70s); this was his only acting role john williams was nominated for original score for this movie; the funny thing is he was nominated for star wars the same year (1977); he's so great he beat himself in the process

"Apollo Creed" of Rocky movie fame in his first cinematic appearance. Such an influential sci fi film.
