Ok who is cutting onions over here?!

BurnNote

Ok, I'm very glad I didn't read this when it was coming out, because that is a terrible spot to end the book on, but it's also an absolutly fantastic climax. This and the next two chapters are soo good. But the good really ought to end two or three chapters from now, because it feels so friggin cheap otherwise, and it would be a genuine shame to tarnish that absolutly fantastic highpoint.

meowmeow

Tbh people are really correct here. This is not a good ending for a novel, even in part of a series. It's fine as a chapter, don't get me wrong, but as others have said the edited and published book should not end this way.

_mori

Lightning is being misspelt a lot as lighting, missing the first n. In this chapter and others.

_mori

“sin-cut”?

JKlarinet

I’m not an expert, but the ending does feel like a trick. Deborah Chester (an actual expert and successful author) explained the problem of this kind of ending this way: “If its true that a book’s ending encourages the reader to buy your next story, how many times can you trick [i.e. leave a conflict unresolved] that reader before she turns to a different author or finds other entertainment[.]” I’ve got an example. When Robert Lynn Asprin started the successful pulp humor-fantasy MYTH Adventures series, it seemed like he might be headed toward becoming an American Terry Pratchett. But, the books began to end with “cliff hangers” - unresolved conflicts. When “M.Y.T.H. Inc. in Action” (Book 9) didn’t even resolve the major question presented at the book’s beginning, I was pretty much done. I’d been tricked too many times. I tolerate this in progression fantasy pretty well (because is *all* serialized), but commenters have a valid point that authors should beware that they can wear out their welcome when dividing books up this way.

Vincenzo

Perfect. Their eyes meet and change the rules of history.

Tristan A

I agree with this. 53 seems like the best of the chapters already published to end the book. But honestly I could see this ending working if Warby plans on doing a timeskip start to the next book.

Gardor

Thats not what the end of a book is about tho, it's not a manipulation tactic to get you to read the NEXT book. The ending should be a resolution to what's happened throughout the book you've already read. You've confused webserial "they'll have to read the next chapter for answers" methodology with like, actual literary structure. Books shouldn't end with "tune in next week!". Ending the book two or three chapters ago would be better, maybe with a "we need to go save the base" alert, if we really need some anxiety at the end.

Leaf

Nope, perfect place to end a book. Can’t imagine reading to this point and then not going on to the next book. Also I’m rooting for fu hard but I have a sinking suspicion that we won’t see much of him next book.

Gardor

It can't really be a single epilogue, cuz that'd mean either glossing over or wrapping up this giant battle/ascension in one chapter. Adding one more chapter wouldn't really FIX any of the problems that come with ending a book here, in other words. If the book ends here, that means the next book starts with the resolution to all this, which is...dumb. This is truly a very bad place to end a book.

Achis74

Weird place to end a book

CentaureHeart

Yeah the ending of the book needs to be when they are all outraged about Tian's sexual encounter with a revered skeleton. That's funny and ends the book on a light note. And then you start off the next book strong with this. Thanks for the chapter!

Gerald Ransom Jr

It’s the ultimate cliffhanger.

Joey T.

It's been a fun ride. Nice work. I do agree that it needs at least an epilogue if you intend to publish Vol 2 with this as the last chapter. Even an epilogue from another POV might do. And maybe clarify / expand upon the last bit leading up to the tribulation. Seems abrupt.

Lawrence Yan

Disillusioned by the path of destruction, violence, death, and ultimately obliteration Brother Fu saw as his end in early life He found enlightenment when he realized that the purpose of strength is not in its ability to destroy but to protect and defend

C

Agreed that would be a much better place to end the book. That or finish up the battle.

C

Have to agree with everyone else. This is a really awkward place to end the book.

Steve Wright

Of the chapters we've seen, I feel like 53 would make a better EoB chapter than this one. 54, 55, and whatever comes right after them would make a helluva kick start for the third volume. Back when we had to buy books in stores, this abrupt an ending before waiting a year for the next one to come out would have made me hella salty. :D

JKlarinet

Who is crying? Not me. I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s just very rainy here. Inside my house. 😭

Nimps

Great chapter but I agree with the others, this is not a chapter you end a book on. It should end after the battle

LUXRUS

Great chapter but if you end a published book with that cliff, your reader will be pissed

Malcolm Haynes

If Brother Fu ascends and it’s because his love for Tian drove his enlightenment, that should destroy Tian’s heart demon I think.

Tessellae

Yeah, no editor worth their salt would let him do this.

Charles

After going to digest this a bit, I feel like this might be what really sets up our boy to go after the Mad God. Currently we have that kind of vague reason that Grampa wants to do it and he's never seemed to quite buy into it just yet, but this would make it personal.

whistler

Amazing end of the chapter, though honestly I had a really hard time following what was happening at the beginning of this and the end of the previous chapter.

M M

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Noah

Please don’t end the book here. End it after he leaves the cavern and we hear a hint about the battle coming to the main camp. This is way too big of an unresolved cliffhanger to leave at the end of a book. Otherwise just finish the Brother Fu tribulation and then end.

João Vene

Warby you can't do this to me man, don't end the book there

LordAlton

Also, I am going to agree with the folks saying that this is not an effective way to end a published book.

LordAlton

Can Tian make soup out of lightning?

Yogesh Thangam

I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!! (Also I hate that I have to wait ten days for the next one) :(

Gavin Olsen

This is why I've stayed subscribed for years lol can't leave with these cliffs

Matthew Dauber

I'm not crying you're crying

Matt

Great chapter, but ending a volume with that sort of cliff is heretical

glare31337

I just want to echo everyone else's sentiment that this doesn't really work for the end of a published book. You need another chapter or at least an epilogue to give a modicum of catharsis for that cliff.

Kain

Not sure if this qualifies as a flag more like a giant flashing neon sign with an arrow pointing at Fu.

Duncan Lester

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 death flags mounting

Sonivitus

It is amazing that you can craft moments of insight/resolve like these

ByZoke

Amazing chapter as always , But i hate the cliff 😢

pierre boucheron

Hard chapter, but damn you gripped me by the neck and kept me in the full of it up to the very end.

LordAlton

...fuck.

Grant Prater

That's beautiful that the moment of seeing Tian triggered his insight

jack

Son of Bitch

Grant Prater

Yeah it's a tribulation going along with ascending to heavenly person realm

Tom C

Killed a heavenly realm person - a person a realm above himself. I think he’s achieved some enlightenment too which is pushing his ascendancy but idk..

fujaks

Okay now the foreshadowing makes sense

Tom C

Ok I’m hoping Fu will survive the heavenly tribulation. Only cried a little bit at that ending. 😅 Gah what a cliff. TFTC!

fujaks

Not pissed enough not to buy the next book 😂

Gardor

"Brother Fu had defied the Heavens and made an achievement unequalled even in the days of old." What did he achieve that no one else has ever done? Also, im not sure about this, but you may wanna have thoughts he's not saying to Grandpa without the quotes. Still in italics, but without the quotes.

Justin Mott

Confused why Fu is being punished. Didn't Tian finish off a heavenly person? Or is he just finally making it into the heavenly person realm

LostinLimbo

This seems like a bad place to end a book, no? I know if I was reading from Amazon or something I'd be pissed at waiting for resolution. I think a better end point was a few chapters ago. Regardless, looking forward to the next one. Have a good week off!

Diarmuid McGinnity

Gorgeous chapter. Is there another before book 3?

CommodoreCaptain

Amazing chapter, I may die of anticipation from this cliffhanger though.
