Tom

I think Tian will either be a wreckerball and crush everyone in his path, or somehow make friends with them all. But I think the sect that makes the ancient crane sect look like a meritocracy will be full of rock throwers, and rock throwers get crushed That is to say I think tian is perfect for this sort of mission, suppress the bratty “elites” and befriend the one worth befriending

Tom

I think his default is still watch and see, but I think Tian has moved past pure mimicry and has found some comfort in interacting with people. I do agree that it’ll be cool to see wrestle with his feral instincts.

whistler

That’s a pretty good comparison actually

Fayhem

The service they would provide is treachery, as in betraying the Orthodox Alliance. We saw what happened to the Gorge when one of their frontlines suddenly collapsed due to key forces pulling out unexpectedly (due to Eunuch Hei throwing his cataclysmic shitfit), and that was when it was happening to the winning side. What do you think would happen if something like that happened to the Orthodox Alliance, when they've been on the back foot most of this war to start with? Shit, the Courtyard wouldn't even have to actually switch sides to deal a potentially catastrophic blow - just making up some excuse to withdraw without warning could do it. As for coming out of nowhere... it's important to remember that we're inhabiting Tian's perspective, and he's a profoundly traumatized teenager who had negative faith in human society as a starting point and has gone on to only find more and more noxious rot under every rock he looks under since the war began. It would be much weirder if he *wasn't* reflexively paranoid, frankly.

Andre the Midget

This arc is getting interesting. We have to remember that Tian is essentially mimicking human behavior. Personality can change, but the fundamentals are set around the age of five. He was the ultimate survivor. He learned patience, observation and scepticisim because the alternative was death. Grandad honed his powers of observation and taught him formal deduction and analytical thinking, but even he admitted that he couldn't "socialize" him, that's the big reason why they joined the sect. Tian's internal monologues continuously show that he is perplexed by human behavior. His default is "this doesn't make sense, but people that I like and admire say it should be this way, so that's what I'll do." One of the things that I'm most looking forward to as this story progresses is watching how the tension between "feral" and "civilized" resolves. I strongly suspect that the beast may be caged, but it will never be tamed. And now, the ultimate pragmatist is dropping into the epicenter of bullshit (illusion as a way of life). What could go wrong?

Edmund C.

Is the last line saying they might have been payed by the Gorge? What service would they even provide? I feel like this kinda came out of nowhere a bit. Accusing an orthodox sect of heresy is a big leap.

Christopher Shaddock

Would love to see the first sentence of the next chapter be tian chanting and dispelling the illusions

Dash of Salt

All I could think of for some reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DHNDTdelRk&t=14s

True_Jolly_Roger

Also, Flute? Why Elder acts as anime fan girl trying to create perfect character!?

Gardor

"Did they really come into a windfall? Or did they receive an advance payment for services to come?" Wish he'd asked this question during his "ask your questions" training, so we had gotten some elder perspective on it. Instead its sorta relying on "MC energy" to have us form an opinion on whether its true or not. I dont know if im explaining that last part correctly. We think its true right now because we're familiar with story structure. If we think its untrue, its because we think the author is bluffing us, using our knowledge of other similar stories to bamboozle us. Whatever the truth of the matter is, our opinions are based exclusively on meta knowledge. I just wish there had been an elder Tian had asked, that said "maybe, heres why and why not, come to your own conclusion based on evidence".

True_Jolly_Roger

Bringing someone like Tian can be disaster or big-brain move or both, I guess.

Leonard Marchant

"it is better to be considered rude and strong, than* polite and weak." Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine

Eddie

Im not sure why I’ve gotten this thought stuck in my head, but I’m anticipating someone from the courtyard to literally throwing a rock at Tian. I want to see how completely he would break them of those rock thrower urges.

Steve Wright

Steelshimmer: Go on, show me your War Face. Tian: ... Steelshimmer: Okay, too much, go back.

Tom C

Ooooh Tian is questioning everything. Are the courtyard betrayers of orthodoxy? I hope the heavenly realm folks are strong enough to deal with it when Tian inadvertently (or even deliberately) blows the whole thing wide open! TFTC

Akkido

You know those moments in animation where one character's face goes dark and all you can see if their features is one glowing eye and long hair thrashing behind them? That's what I imagined when Tian showed off his "feral" look.

Alexander Dupree

“…and what is your name?” “Xi. Na. Ro. …”

Vainirion

Can’t be worse than that one kid screeching Pickle Rick

Tom

I’m looking forward to Tian throwing them off as he definitely won’t be like any cultivator they have met. I hope he infuriates them more than they are infuriating. A virtuous enigma all while being able to crush anyone below heavenly level

Alexander Dupree

Grandpa coming in with the “WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE HEAVY METAL POISONING? Oh…”

Steve Wright

To “lard up” something is to add extra stuff to make it more luxurious. Imagine a church lady who wants to impress at the potluck, throwing a little extra lard in the recipe to make a nicer mouthfeel and a little more flavor.

Macronomicon

I'm really looking forward to tian following her advice to the letter and punching the first person that asks him a clarifying question or bumps into him on the street. No build up, no talking, just punches to the face.

Alexander Dupree

Some lowly rank 10 challengers him to “share his dao” and he promptly consecrates the arena into a holy site that they have to abandon or lose all the juniors who step into it to the Temples.

Alexander Dupree

Do you think they were laughing and trying to hold it in or just completely shocked to see him break character

Noroh

Elder Shimmersteel: Are you sure- Elder Feng: I'm checking again just to be sure.

Abhi

Here is hoping the burning cinnabar is at least an illusion. Because otherwise these folks are nuttier than lead addled Romans.

Book Worm

Curious to see how Tian’s sectmates would react to seeing his jungle madman look/aura

Ben Nikel

I feel like I'm going to both love and hate the people of this place; "gather total knowledge of your opponent and use that to move them as you will" is both a fascinating philosophy and one that is ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING. Also, hell yeah. Image is everything... I think the Elders are the first people in a good, long time that have seen Feral Goblin Tian Zihao. Except he's got at least two more fingers.

Kain

It’s interesting that this is a joint envoy now but 7-stars doesn’t seem to have brought along any juniors to participate in the face slapping. I’m surprised Crane mountain is alright with that, in the case things go wrong and escalate 7-stars has a way out by not having brought any “savage juniors” while Crane Mountain could be on the hook for a new forever enemy, maybe 2 if 7 stars wants to paint the incident as also diminishing their face and joins the courtyard. Shows a lot of trust in 7 stars from the mountains higher ups….. unfortunate their track record on social games is….. is terrible a strong enough word?

bluwmonkey

At the Earthly Realm, they lard them up with extra tools to control basic arrays. Lard should load I think

CentaureHeart

Ah that last line. Really hope this will be pronounced out loud by an Elder soon. Also, do you have plans for a map at some point?

Tom

I’m excited to see Tian interact with an even less meritocratic sect than his own. So many rock throwers to suppress, so little time.

Tom

I just hope he doesn’t ask those questions to the wrong person

Noah

They want to throw the Five Element Courtyard off their stride? I literally can’t think of a better person to do that than Tian, he literally baffles Heavenly Person’s on the regular. I can’t wait to see what kind of chaos he gets into!

Thouit

She should know him well enough by now to understand that he would take "see him as a madman" literally

JTP

Tians ability to ask the right questions continues to impress.

TeDureShi

Tian is intense and very smart

Alexander Dupree

Oooh that’s a take I didn’t think of!

JackassofAllTrades

Lol at Steelshimmer being the one to blink first and command Tian to ask her questions

Rischirobi

Thx for the chapter

tp19orc

Heartbreaker Tian just got an upgrade. Tftc!

Steve Wright

Last line is *chef’s kiss* perfect. Tian asking the right questions. So looking forward to this arc!
