This entire chapter is just Tian thinking to himself, yet it's some of the best action you've written in this story. The doubt spiral was incredibly paced and the descriptions poignant without being overwrought. Also was Tian about to rip his own heart out?

A crux here is expectation. Humans are horrible at it even optimally and if our models taught by socialization and experience dont align we get cognitive dissonance that may have us avoid updating our models to be closer to the true context of the matter. So we reach for many things that may not in truth get us what we desire. There is nothing special in not having a model flawed in a speicfic, way, such is a hallmark of how one has been taught to proccess life. The thing that encompasses anyone is simply how well they can acknowledge the temporality of what they "know". Because that comforting lie is easily reinforced. So seeking to be better while knowing one may ever be uncertain is a whole thing.

I wrote this on a post it, and hung it in my office. "There were things he didn’t know, things he couldn’t know, and that was fine. Not knowing wasn’t the same as being uncertain. He would learn what he didn’t know in time, or not. Either was fine."

"Failure was habit forming" is not quite accurate. "Accepting failure is habit forming" is more accurate, for true growth occurs when you fail refuse to accept it and do what you failed at a new way and succeed. Also what a great end to the chapter.
