My notes have the slithering swarm as a Labyrinth-only myrvite, which is distinct from the abominations inside the Labyrinth. You're right that they're definitely atypical. There still might be a continuity error though, so I'll add that to my notes to take a look at.

Bartis Edmond Hawley-Wall

Continuity error? > Soul sight wouldn’t pick up anything because labyrinthine creatures didn’t have souls. But just a few paragraphs back, when she first enters: > When a slithering swarm tried to ambush her, she ground it into dust and took its soul for mana. The first book introduced the slithering swarm as a myrvite, but its easy to confuse the two types without calling it out more clearly when its a myrvite inside the Labyrinth and not a labyrinthine creature. Especially with how slithering swarms were described as just bundles of wires in the Frostland's Gate Labyrinth, so they don't seem as "natural" as most myrvites.

Scebur is most likely a different person each time in my opinion likely only contiguous in that they're some emissary of another elder god driven partially mad/soul overwritten. Potentially even capable of overwriting individual loopers for singular loops, ie I think liuan and jherica have been overwritten in the past. An alternative take I had in theast 20 or so chapters I can't remember the reason for was also suspecting it might be the second prophet but I forget what line made me connect dots in a way to suspect that and it's infuriating.

Fixed, thanks.

Now that Mirian has left Tlaxhuaco, I'm going to try and work through some of what we learned there. I might end up writing a lot again. So, I'll start with a misunderstanding about spirits that I had, and that I think other people have been having, too. Nagual do not harvest the souls of their spirits. Before the time loop, they probably wouldn't have had any good way to do it, even if they wanted to. To harvest and store souls, you need to use the nine bindings. Nagual didn't know any of them before Xecatl found the first eight in the Mausoleum. While it is clear that nagual have methods for storing some soul energy (to power their enchanted wooden equipment, and to cast their runic spells), multiple factors indicate that nagual do not, or at least very rarely, harvest the entire soul of living organisms. Nagual see souls as infrastructure, not fuel. They can use spirits to provide all the soul energy they need, and far less invasevely. And the average Tlaxhuacan is religiously opposed to harvesting spirits as a necromancer would, as demonstrated by Xipuatl in chapter 228. All this is to say, the harvesting and application of spirits using necromancy is likely to be extremely under studied. I think there is a huge amount of potential in this line of research. Even just being able to partially replicate spirit abilities using harvested spirits would be amazing. You would no longer need to rely on a stationary garden. If any of this is possible, I imagine that entire spirits put in a repository wouls be far more active then any random collection of regular souls. Imagine attaching a spirit to a spell, and having it resist siphoning attempts. Or a symbiotic spirit a mage can attach to themselves, that aids the mage, or even automatically neutralizes any foreign curses. Or even more diabolical, a parasitic spirit that latches onto an enemy's soul, and works to destroy it, while being extremely hard to remove. I'm curious to see where spirits go from here. One old question that this arc didn't answer is why Xipuatl wanted Mirian's blood when he first started training her. I must assume that he had, or at least knew of, a spirit that could use the blood for something? Or maybe he was just bluffing. Xipuatl is also very interesting. What exactly did he want his unified theory to look like? He doesn't think of souls as energy, like a necromancer. Like a nagual, he thinks of them as tools that, through soul interactions, produce unique phenomena. Did he want to learn of a way to measure souls and the interactions between them, and to connect those measurements to the arcane system, so that he could calculate exactly what a spirit is doing, and how it does it? That would be very useful. You could begin to categorize different souls, and devise a system to predict the outcome of soul on soul interactions. Kind of like predicting the results of chemical reactions. A standardized framework for classification and measurement would help in creating new spirits using new souls. I wonder if Mirian will go down this route now?

Choronach

I have a wild thought. Maybe the solution isn't to save Enteria? Maybe the solution is to evacuate by using the (probably) starships that can house self Sustaining ecosystems by repairing them and either come down to rebuild civilization or find another planet?

Edit Mirian remembered her first *decent* into the Labyrinth. Descent

Mundane

Our mysterious cloaked dude with the super edgy style is of course a stand in for the internet reader who is always complaining about the pace of stories and skipping all of the talking bits to get to the fight scenes.

RainbowCatTopHat

The suffocation spell is powerful but kills slow enough that it leaves her opponent time to react (As we saw with Mirian herself). Hiding in the 4th dimension is the real game changer in battle, she'd be basically invulnerable and invisible. Assuming staying in the 4th dimension is possible.

Robert Mullins

If it wasn't implied she's on a time limit I'd like to see a nostalgia loop, where she goes through events as if she didn't know what she did about the loops and tries to just be a student again.

Mr NerfGun

First soul Ascension, Endelice mountains, her auric senses are sharpened. She can now absorb environmental mana. Her eyes went from grey to silver. Second soul Ascension, First City, she can now incorporate soul energy bits, memories left behind. Her eyes now glow silver. Third soul Ascension, her mother's tomb, she has reinforced her soul and her memories. Her soul is stronger and more stable. Her eyes glow more. Fourth soul Ascension, Ceiba Yan, she can now absorb the auric mana of myrvites and has a better ability to absorb mana in general, can better comprehend spirits. Nothing said about the change to the eyes. The person whose eyes glow golden is Xecatl. Likely because she had brown eyes.

Nathan

When did her third soul ascension happen and what powers did it enable ? If i remember correctly as a result of the second her eyes turned golden, and here it says her latest ascension is the fourth; I must've missed the third

lenkite

Well - she wanted to go into space right ? So making a [Environmental Suit] spell is a must anyways. Then she can laugh at this monster and study it while it tries its best to suffocate her.

DrSubterfuge

Spirits are naturally occurring, but they can also be cultivated to have a magical function that in some cases can do the same thing as a spell engine

Eyo

Thanks for the chapter. I’m confused about how spirits work. Isn’t that just a term for a bunch of souls interacting with each other and their environments, creating unique ecosystems (e.g., describing how this specific tree, these bugs, this bacteria, etc., connect)? How can Viridian replace his detectors with spirit constructs that he communes with? What does that actually look like?

Ace

I was also wondering why Mirian isn't interacting and using her father more. But for the labyrinth she probably just wants to train and grow stronger on her own, or even just get used to her new powers. The best way to get stronger is to put your life at risk and since she is in a timeloop it doesn't matter.

Anonymous

Is there some reason I missed why she doesn’t take her father with her as she explores the Labyrinth?

CherMi

A very nice first expedition. I hope Mirian will take time both to refine her existing spells and to make new spells that imitate effective monsters. Overpowered lighting is well and good, but when it will be time to fight other people, they'll have some defenses against it, unlike against a 4th dimension suffocation spell.

zoarian

Damn, Mirian is such a badass - a one woman army. I'm kinda hoping for a prophet council expedition to the labyrinth, if only for the banter.

Robert Mullins

Combining arcane and celestial glyphs to make enchanted items that interact with both the soul and mana.

Mr NerfGun

Cyberpunk herald? Or.... A Tech-priest? Ominian = Omnissiah?

Gustav

Can someone remind me what tri-bonded glyphs are?

Anotherb Account

Slight typo: “decent” instead of “descent”. Awesome chap! Excited to be labyrinth delving again, especially now that Mirian is freaking scary powerful

chumponimys

Missed op to name this chapter "Back to the Lab Again"

Enthernal

exploration time! Starting off nicely with a new challenging monster and a mystery encounter. Now to see what she can get out of it.
