“A new dervish form?” he said in shock when she told her how she’d managed her temporary increase in power. Her=him or “A new dervish form?” he said in shock when told how she’d managed her temporary increase in power.

Michael Vonica

I don't think that's that's the case. But I do think dervishes can probably get crazy strong. If a Dervish can run two sets of forms at the same time, what happens if they run blooming iron with another form? Does the other form become stronger?

Griffus

Rostal could be the original ancient persaman hero and have reached inmortality via a different way tha her fathers

Another thing I misunderstood was tri bonded sequences. They aren't just some buzz word for magic that can do anything. There are some actual rules to them, starting with the fact that there are at least two different types. The tri bonds that Mirian first discovers in chapter 100 use only glyphs, and she finds the second type of them, that use both glyphs and runes, in chapter 104. How exactly glyph only tri bonds work isn't really clear. But for the other type, the main point seems to be that they can combine arcane and soul energies into a single spell. Like when Mirian coats her attack spells in soul energy to help them pierce soul resistance, but far more refined. You can't do something like that without tri bonds. The other feature of tri bonds is that they allow spells to use functions normally exclusive to glyphs or runes. Like a light spell that can turn on or off if it senses human souls. Or a light to electricity transformation spell that turns on or off, depending on how much light energy it detects. What I'm still unclear on is if glyph and rune tri bonds can run off of only arcane energy, or if they need soul energy too. I'm leaning towards the former.

Michael Vonica

I'm going to try making these observations and theories into multiple comments, to make them take less space. Complain if it is bad. On the 8/3 weekly roundup, I made a comment on the idea of using tri bonded sequences to switch from fossil power to soul power. And maybe even creating things like autonomous scribing machines. But now that I understand things better, I'm wondering how much of that is even necessary. To begin with, tri bonds aren't needed. I think that converting soul energy into arcane energy is something that can be done purely with runic spells. That energy can then either be passed into a sequence of glyphs, or sucked in by one. I suspect that this is how Gaius' undead can function without mages to recharge their glyph enchantments. And even if runes can't turn soul into arcane, like Mirian, they can just turn mundane energies into arcane, and do as I said above. I misunderstood that before. This is what would really help get off fossilized myrvite. You can turn the force of water and wind, or the heat of geothermal sources, into arcane energy. Maybe even light, too. It would still take soul energy to power the runic transformation spells, but you could likely make it far more efficient than something like black shield, by limiting it to a single energy conversion. And it might be far better for the enviornment, and could be used to power more delicate equipment, like an autonomous glyph scribing machine. Light might be harder to deal with, with how dispersed it is. Too bad no one has a clue about fusion, yet. The only real problem is that it needs soul energy to function. And while it would be useful for fighting against the ban on soul magic, it would slow down the rollout of the machinery. Maybe Mirian will one day find a spell that makes soul energy from arcane energy? Then the runic spells that transform energy could power themselves off of mundane energy, as well. That would make it somewhat difficult to even realize the machines use soul magic.

With all the incredibly powerful artefacts Mirian is making, it’s kind of a shame the she seems highly likely to become a Lich after the loop and hoard them - imagine how fun it would be for someone else to discover and use them

Love this story. Can’t wait to see what cool thing she binds and what crazy shit she can do with the needle. Also just randomly been thinking about this but I think it’d be cool if she goes back after the loop ends and adds her own note in that book she found the note from the past prophet

Michael Vonica

Mirian has discovered that, including the three specific alloys of metal she already knew, there are other materials that can bind to and store soul energy. So far, other than metal, all she knows of is the organic (and crystal, I suppose) material that makes up labyrinth creatures. But this material does not behave like the metals she knows. It exhibits a weak attractive force to soul energy, meaning that soul energy can be added and subtracted from it with much greater ease. You are right about the centiscerator and enervator. For the latter, it seems that its crystal attracts soul energy with such force (by, seemingly, the same principle that all other labyrinth creatures do), that it registers as a void of soul energy. But its capacity is limited, and so if you fully saturate the material with soul energy, its ability to suck in more is reduced. For the question of if the creatures have souls, it seems to be that they always have had them. People just couldn't tell, because the way the creatures bind them to their own bodies makes the soul energy undetectable by traditional methods. Just like soul metals. As for the question of where the energy comes from, I have a few theories. To begin, consider chapter 103. Mirian removes a creature from the labyrinth, and it immediately dies. My theory is that the labyrinth detected it leaving, and yanked out the soul energy from it, thus killing it. Should that be true, it would not be a stretch to think that the labyrinth is just as capable of infusing soul energy into the creatures as retracting it. Where does the labyrinth get the soul energy? Two theories. It either sucks it out of regular animals and myrvites in econodes and on the surface, or it produces it from arcane energy, in the opposite way to how Mirian produces arcane energy from soul energy. To me, the idea of the labyrinth infusing creatures with soul energy is very similar to how spirits can infuse runes with energy. Perhaps the labyrinth itself is alive, or at least has something resembling its own soul? (On another note, there are certain magichemical reactions that only work in the labyrinth. Chapter 102. The produced substance also becomes inert upon leaving the labyrinth. The labyrinth is likely using soul energy to make the reactions work, and taking back the soul energy whenever the substance leaves the labyrinth. On another nother note, I think it would be hilarious if Platus is attempting to perform Triarchy era soul alchemy, but is blowing himself up because he doesn't know what he is doing.) Ideas Mirian can test: Work on becoming undetectable to labyrinth creatures, in every possible way. Examine their regular behaviors. Injure them, and examine how they react. Learn how the labyrinth pulls soul energy from them when they leave the labyrinth, and use that to injure them, and then see if the labyrinth will heal that soul wound for the creature. Maybe even learn to infuse them with soul energy herself, and take them out of the labyrinth, to better study them. In addition, identify the materials inside the creatures that can bond with soul energy, as well as other such materials from outside of the labyrinth. Work on a more general magichemical theory for how soul energy can bond to substances. Perhaps this explains why the magichemicals for arcane and soul foci can not be synthesized? In the end, Mirian might just need to make her leyline regulators out of organic materials that can bond to soul energy. They might even need to be alive. It's going to be kind of hard to find chemists who can use soul energy to help her study this. Train people in Tlaxhuaco? Recruit the priests who make soul metals?

FuriousDee

I wonder how many more of the energy sink artifacts she needs to get a full set? Also was the stabiliser she planned to include them in the one that should double as armour or the ones meant to be permanent? If she built the heat absorption device and the energy transfer defences, from her father, into the armour then she would be incredibly hard to hurt while wearing it.

Zurko

So maybe im understanding this wrong but the centiscerator is infusing its carapace with soul energy to make it very spell resistant? And the other monster is doing the same thing to its crystal? But labyrinth monsters don't have souls so what soul energy are they infusing?

Shane T.

That’s about the size of it so far

Michael Vonica

Just to make sure I have this right, but for multiple miles around, Mirian only found a single entrance to the 6th layer, and it connects to no other rooms than those two vaults?

FuriousDee

Her armour is planned to be next I think

Amadhe

Yo…. That’s an amazing idea.

Mountainking

Recarlium the cthonic needle perhaps to bring it with you. And then stab it into someone and then maybe their soul will come with you. Of course soul bound items cause friction to other souls, so you would need to fix that too

chumponimys

Too bad her mother's gone or we could've explored tri-bonded family moments :p

Arnon Parenti

Nice loot

DrSubterfuge

Conductor and Eyeball are probably going to be first on that list. Unclear how capable her follow loopers will get with glyphs. Maybe the researcher will get there eventually. Maybe a yet unmet looper is already at the point Mirian is though

orinatic

Thank you for the chapter! I wonder what she'll use the relicarium on?

Ataready

I've had this thought earlier, but I wonder: at what point is Mirian going to start speaking in runes? They're basically pure meaning, so at least with the other prophets, they'd be better for discussing all the new magic she's exploring.

Metal(Liz)ard🏳️‍⚧️

Im sure that part of her future plans will involve eliminating all other loopers and using a cthonic needle on herself

Leila

I love the cute father daughter bonding moments
