I would go one step further. By being annoyed at others being emotional and specifically by not treating this upcoming apocalypse as the only important event, she's making herself a huge hypocrite. Because of her own views about power and how it should be used. All of Gabriels examples and plans could be derailed by her stating that she'd just be a tyrant willing to do whatever necessary to move the resources needed. Her refusal to even acknowledge that this is an option makes me really hate her.

Fixed, thanks.

Right aha. I’ve been waiting for him to show his value, his skill has been demonstrated, but mostly used for annoying Miriam so far. Good stuff

If there's one thing Mirian should learn from Gabriel, it's definitely that humans are emotional animals. And she is one of those animals too. Fundamentally, the same impulses drive her as those that drive those powerful people who get in her way, and make the world a worse place. Everyone has their desires, and they all pursue them. Mirian believes that she is simply taking the most logical course of action. The crisis is the most important thing, and focusing on anything else is a waste. Harming and exploiting others is disgusting, wasteful, and just makes the world worse. People need to look past what they want and recognize reality. But while these ideas are logical, that isn't why Mirian believes in them. She believes in them because these are the ideas that resonate with her, and the ones she has carried with her since childhood. How Mirian pursues her desires is more complex than how someone like Aurum does. He wants the power and respect, and so he does what he needs to take it. Mirian, on the other hand, has an idea in her head, about what it means to live as a good person. Rules on what you should and should not do. What Mirian wants, on top of her simpler desires, is to live up to that image. When Mirian chooses to push herself through tedium and frustration in her pursuit of a solution to this crisis, instead of trying to find something she actually enjoys doing, it isn't just because that is the logical thing to do. It is also because, in her mind, if she doesn't put her all into solving this problem, how can she call herself a good person? And she wants to be able to do that, especially in the face of all those people who go around hurting others, and have hurt her in the past. She is one of a handful of people with the power to make the world a better place. And Mirian has pretty strong opinions on how someone with that power should use it. That's why she gets so angry at all the people who misuse their power. And so she dedicates herself to using her power responsibly, so that even if she has to suffer for it, she knows that she lived up to her own image. But in a way, all this just makes her more resentful of those who don't live as she does, because they now not only don't live up to the principles she thinks they should, they ignore their responsibilities while she puts so much effort into living up to them. But the truth of the matter is, this really is all just an idea in Mirian's head. These rules for how people should behave are nothing more than her feelings. And other people can have completely different sets of ideas for what it means to live as a good person. Think of Spectar and Voran. I think it's completely possible that both these people believe that everything they have done has all been for the greater good. But alongside Mirian, all three have completely incompatable ideas on what it means to live as a good person. So which one of them is right? The answer is none of them. It isn't some math question. Again, humans are emotional animals. Feelings are all relative, and logic can only bend them so much. In fact, it can be a lot trickier for smarter people. They can always come up with some convincing explanation for why doing what they always wanted to is actually the logical thing to do. It gets even more complicated when you add in inhuman perspectives. The intelligent myrvites and gods likely conceive of the world in ways completely alien to humans. Trees and titans have no sense of morality or human honor, but they live lives no less complex than humans. But do the ways they feel and the things they want somehow matter less? In terms of actual benifits that Mirian could get from thinking of things this way, I'm not so sure. It doesn't change much. It makes none of the actual, real problems go away. And it won't change how Mirian lives her life and pursues her goals. Maybe it could give her a bit more perspective? It could let her understand herself and the people she has so much friction with a little better. Maybe it could calm some of her anger, and make it easier to work with people and deal with the frustration?

I really enjoyed that Jei found a way to connect with Mirian the storm - I’ve been enjoying but also saddened by their interactions, this was nice. As always … loving it!

This story is really fun. I love how Mirian is presented with a variety of extremely difficult problems (of which only a small subsection are combat) and has to find and create solutions. I think sometimes magic is described as having infinite potential and then used in the story mostly to create larger fireballs or better shields that block fireballs. It's all through the lens of combat. But this story does a really good job of giving Mirian problems that don't have easy solutions which requires her to innovate and develop new spells to help. I'm excited for Mirain to use her Archmage level skills in magic to develop better communication, travel, etc. I'm even interested in seeing what problems magic can't solve and how she deals with those. Sorry if these seems like it comes out of nowhere and isn't really related to this chapter in specific. I was just thinking about why I like the magic system of this story so much.

lenkite

Huh, forgot that her being able to cast in dream meant she could cast without a manifested spellbook

Mr NerfGun

Gabriel is content with the status quo. Mirian is not and cannot accept it staying the way it is. Destroying the current order would also significantly reduce Gabriel's power. Their goals are not aligned.

Mr NerfGun

And he seems to appear whenever something Fourth dimensional happens. Though I don't know if trying to touch the soul with the aura can be considered fourth dimensional.

FuriousDee

So this is Gabriel showing how he can be worth more than three days

Thanks for the chapter! Excited to see more magic. The dream figure has been lurking for quite a while, so I’ll be happy to see Mirian’s oneiromancy efforts pay off. I often wonder if Gabriel’s speeches ever get through to Mirian. Again, she ends the conversation with more anger.

Momongama

The mysterious visitor is starting to give me the impression of someone trying to communicate from the future, or from the past

zoarian

Oh hell yeah! Love it when Mirian experiments with new magic. The dream magic will be juicy and it'll be so epic once she starts casting with a de-manifested soulbound focus.

Thanks for the chapter!
