Pixelblade

Ascension is really fucking with how she views the world.

RedEyeLordofFire

Edit Suggestion: Replace the word periodic with sporadic. "Mirian established the Gates as she had the last cycle, then went through the Jiandzhi Gate and flew south to retrieve Zhuan. Their contact in the Ominian’s Dream was periodic, but enough for them to coordinate"

UraniumPhoenix

Good call, that does need to be edited for clarity.

Reed M

maybe reword “The small group around Liuan’s eyes grew wide” to be “The eyes of the small group around Liuan grew wide”- it was kind of awkward to read

FuriousDee

I don’t think their is one, which is why their is so much yapping after each chapter

zoarian

Is there a discord for this story? Feels like patreon has a huge appetite for yapping... Should I set one up if it's not already done?

FuriousDee

Did the fourth prophet build or find the holy pages? Either way if Mirian manages to communicate with him though the dream she could ask how to get more of them.

Parker Groseclose

She needs Liuan's help to stop the Akkana invasion of Trovol. Ibrahim gives them more fighting power which will be useful as Mirian is the best damage dealer among them but she is also one of best crafters. It's good to delegate

FuriousDee

That would be really interesting

Thorlol

Was there a reason why Mirian keeps the other people around? Especially Ibrahim and Liuan? It seems they have zero interest in solving the problem and are only interested in finding ways to win a war.

Michael Vonica

Another crazy idea: Could labyrinth econodes exist for the purpose of creating spirits, either to be harvested and turned into items (assuming the elder gods could even do this), or perhaps to serve some sort of function within the labyrinth itself?

SlickMongoose

You know what would be funny? If time travellers on some other continent the other side of the world didn't realise that moonfall was causing the apocalypse (being the other side of the earth they wouldn't be able to see it) and assumed it was a weapon causing it, and now have time in the longer loops to gather an army and invade.

Michael Vonica

I think I have a crazy explanation for how the Triarchy created the Divir moon. I think whatever ritual they performed broke the elevator function on the Elder Gate. The elevator could have just started pushing the whole moon up into the sky, until it couldn't push it any further. That's why it is maintaining a geostationary orbit. It is sitting at the top of a magical elevator shaft. Has there been any mention of the control room for the Mausoleum gate? Is it up on the moon, or is it still sitting on Enteria?

Arthur

I cannot tell you how much I love your story. Thanks for the chapter !

Michael Vonica

Yeah, no way is this the final design. She hasn't figured out what all the vault relics do, doesn't know how to make stable 4d structures, probably still has plenty of runes she doesn't know, and I personally believe there is an entire branch of soul based alchemistry she doesn't even know about.

kyle

Not if solving the crises locks in that timeline as some of the prophets believe. Then it becomes quite important to do things the best way for them before allowing anyone to stop the moon.

Kulshan

Ah yes, Zhuanist Standard Friian

Armo

Just one thought: If Mirian still has many years of looping left, she will likely shrink the final design serveral times more. That should make this enterprise much more feasible than it is currently. A ten kilometer circumference construction is smaller than the LHC. However, the LHC took ten years to build, and it was located far more centrally than where they’re planning to build the regulator. I am not sure how the complexity of the two projects compares, but it’s certainly a tall order. I will say this: it should certainly be possible, with infinite planning time, to build it. The other prophets likely don’t yet understand that Mirian has reliable ways to ship information across loops, and that’s at least a part of why they are sceptical.

SlickMongoose

Yep, it's entirely possible.

Mr NerfGun

She should wait after she made her armor to do that. It is too risky otherwise.

lenkite

That would be like waving a [Red Flag] to the Akanan delegation. Hello, here is the [Necromancer]. My advisor. *immediate chaos*

Nick M

I see some people theorizing that maybe Scebur isn’t real and is just an excuse for some of Liuan's hidden actions, but I have a different crackpot theory: What if Scebur is actually Celen? We have been told that he is blowing his brains out at the start of every loop, but Mirian only saw a head-exploded body, no soul to confirm a temporal anchor. What if Celen is grabbing the nearest lookalike, blowing their brains out in his house to make it look like a suicide, then going into hiding and taking action as Scebur at the start of every loop? It would make sense if he was as traumatized by Troyton as Mirian was, to develop a plan to escape his notice and build strength in the shadows by making it look like he was killing himself at the start of every loop. Not sure how feasible this is, but its just a possibility I was thinking of.

BlastYoBoots

Ibrahim's hopeless-sounding ending lines represent the perfect opportunity for Miriam to take him aside, publicly or privately, and tell him at the very least that he must master the ability to cast with tri-bonded glyphs (to do the complicated soul-bonding process, though she need not go into detail yet) if he wishes to save his wife. The certainty that she CAN be saved would be the ultimate proof to pierce through Ibrahim's cynicism that the forest of shadowed futures cannot be navigated. However, that would require courage from Miriam that she may not yet possess, and might not until it's too late.

Armo

I would like to say that while I appreciate that the political consequences of all this are important, Mirian has by far the most appropriate attitude to this crisis in my opinion. The catastrophe here is not slow and is absolute. Solving it by any means necessary has to be high priority at least. If the Akanans want to continue using spell engines, they need to figure out a counter-proposal. The prophets are representatives of nations by choice only. They can equally be a shadowy cabal that seizes control, or some other entity driving change. While their actions will have repercussions for nations, they must not forget that they have much, much more agency than any mere representative.

gotag

It may also be possible to catch Celen in the dream

SlickMongoose

Mirian really needs to go find a gate in Mercanton and try to get to Celen quickly to see what's going on there. I don't think Liuan is really trying.

FuriousDee

Suspicious of having done what? Recently he has seemed focused on making sure Mirian considers alternatives to Zhuan’s methods.

Evil Legend

I don’t think that’s entirely fair. Mirian’s point of view isn’t that one-dimensional — she does care about long-term consequences. Besides, it seems that the reason for their current crisis is that the previous prophet failed at considering the long-term outlook. It’s just that, given the information and experience available to her, she sees finding a way to prevent the world’s destruction as the top priority — something everyone should dedicate their full effort to. Because everything she knows suggests that the time loops are probably finite, so if they don’t succeed in at least this part of the task, there won’t be anything left at all. Only after they have a working way to stop the apocalypse can they start worrying about long-term political consequences. Especially since they’ll need to ensure that the magical engines stop being used industrially — or at least that their design is fundamentally changed, so that they don’t just postpone the apocalypse again. I think her priorities are actually perfectly reasonable.

Ben Sheahan

IMO, Mirian’s perspective on the loops needs to change. Her views on money, soul healing, politics and faith are representative of this. In her mind, the long term effects don’t seem to matter so long as the world is saved. I don’t imagine she would have been able to make it through the early loops to where she is without that mindset, but she needs to start living/thinking in the long term. She seems to acknowledge this, but still hasn’t taken any steps to change her mindset.

FuriousDee

I wonder why Mirian didn't bring her father to vouch for the feasibility of her design. Also she should host the next one of these on the moon.

FuriousDee

I don't see how it could end in 10-20 chapters without feeling anticlimactic and rushed and probably with Mirian's soul just breaking and them losing. This is them laying out the problems they will need to solve, the scale of what is required, the cooperation needed between people who clearly don't agree. It isn't solvable in 20 chapters without drastically changing the pacing of the story, even if nothing goes wrong, and if it did we wouldn't get resolutions to a bunch of subplots like Secbur and the second returned anchor.

Michael Vonica

Mirian thinks he's meditating on the nature of the universe or something, but he's just been trying to find the best location and pose to maximize his aura. Going to turn it into a Dervish stance.

Zurko

I think she's always dressed as a student but idk

antpocas

Mirian really ought to remove the marker from the aKKKanan Liuan

Evil Legend

Just expanding on that thought a bit, since it’s still stuck in my head — aside from Jherica, Gabriel is the only one who fully follows Mirian’s lead. He does whatever she asks of him, and apart from a few symbolic protests and his usual complaints, he doesn’t actually oppose her plans or ideas. Sometimes he even tries, in his own way, to point out her weak spots. Like, yeah, he doesn’t seem particularly effective while doing it, and sometimes it feels like he puts more effort into annoying her than actually helping. But still.

Matt H

Considering Mirian's current power and mindset I think the story is either going to end in the next 10-20 chapters or it's going to go for easily another 100-200+. Her current approach just doesn't feel sustainable for an extended period of time.

Matt H

That's an interesting question. I think her value exists so long as: the number of loops is "reasonably" finite, there's no way to preserve memories outside of a temporal anchor, and the duration of the loops is nearing the maximum possible length. If any of those are false I think removing someone like Liuan from the loop may be beneficial in the long run.

Evil Legend

Honestly, I’m still not even sure Scebur exists as a separate person. Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention or misremembered something from the earlier chapters, but I’m still not convinced we have enough facts to be sure Scebur isn’t just an excuse for Liuan to do some shady stuff on the side or something like that. Like, yeah, there are definitely setup elements for some kind of villain or mind-magic-based threat — because that’s a solid trope to use in a time-loop story. We also have that mysterious half-cybernetic figure from the dream-realm, which, while not necessarily related to the Scebur situation, still suggests there are some hidden players operating in the background.

Mr NerfGun

So, little question. What kinds of clothing does Mirian usually wear? And what is she wearing in this council meeting? I'm just wondering how she appears to the others.

Evil Legend

It cracks me up every time how dysfunctional their meetings look — they’re all just so different, with completely different values and worldviews. It’s especially funny because our main perspective is Mirian’s, where saving the world is obviously the top priority. So when you look at the more ideologically driven Prophets from that angle, they honestly come off like they’re almost sabotaging their own world’s salvation efforts. Also, I realized I actually really sympathize with Gabriel’s position. The level of burnout from how deeply he used to care (and it constantly shows through), combined with a context that always feels hopeless and meaningless, led him to conclude that if he couldn’t successfully achieve his goals and live up to his ideals, then he must be a bad person. And once he accepted that he was a bad person, it gave him permission — at least in his own mind — not to care, not to feel pain or guilt, and to just be okay. But then there’s Mirian, and partly a few others, who didn’t give up, who keep fighting and even seem to be making real visible progress. And now Gabriel’s running headfirst into the holes in his worldview — realizing that even though apathy feels natural to him now, there’s still that idealistic version of himself lingering somewhere inside. I mean, yeah, I’m obviously projecting hard here, but that’s how I see him right now — and why he’s so cynically detached and comedically provocative toward everyone else.

Michael Vonica

Liuan seems... even less capable than Gabriel normally does. Here's my wild bet: I still think that Scebur is capable of some kind of mind magic. I bet they have filled Liuan's or Jherica's entourage full of spies.

João Vene

Ibrahim decided he didn't have anything to add once he saw the schematics, and spent the rest of the meeting figuring out what to say in his exit to maximize aura farming.

YarrowFlowers

I feel like every prophet could be the one who breaks the entire council, fantastic chappie

Clara

The tensionsssssssssss

zoarian

Man, I love how much you can tell about the prophets by the way they arrived and where they stayed. It's a really organic way to express their viewpoints and bases of power.

Touch

Poor Mirian getting tired of people, wish she could get a break so she could get over this and improve her people skills

Touch

Gabriel is REALLY suspicious, with his skills as an infiltrator(some soul skills) and already having dream focus? Nahhh

SlickMongoose

Interesting dilemma. Liuan seems to care more about her nation coming out on top than solving the crisis, and relies more on the local authorities around her, but the situation is probably even worse if she's not in the loop.

KooZnack

Thanks for the chapter!
