No I am primarily using SDL & C, writing my games from scratch. Using Unity for 2D projects is like using Visual Studio for programming, absolute monstrous overkill. These past 2 years I have been swamped with work, I have barely had any time or energy for any coding ;__; I work in the cross section of network engineering, data technicians and industrial automation. If you are finding Godot daunting, then give Game Maker a shot, it's within the same niche and use-case but proprietary. But I'm familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the different engines, that is why you read the specifics that I type. PS. Making a 2D game in Unity is still better than making a non-visual novel in Ren'Py!

Do you have experience with the goldot engine and how it compares to for example unity? I'm mainly interested in making 2D games and I was under the impression gofot is quite suitable for that. I still can't fully see how to handle huge projects with that concept though.

The reason it has given you a challenge, is because you have used a engine not suited to make games, for well, making games. When you acclimatize your productivity and your ability to make consistent gameplay loops will rise :D

YES! to a bot arcade manager. I like tinkering with my bots and creating new ones and would love to see them exist out in the wild in something that includes management and meeting customer demands. That empty droid hostel on Iltari needs to be re-opened at some point...
