I would recommend to do everything in this way, but just add new layers of brighter color. For example, there where I finished with the layer of Neutral Grey add one more layer of Blue Grey Pale, and there where I finished on Black or Dark Grey add one more, brighter layer with Neutral Grey :)

Don't use white spirits, it leaves the surface greasy. I think that you could use nail cleaner (be very careful with that and don't mix it up with nail polish remover)

I'm having trouble finding in the US the brush cleaner that you use. Is it white spirits/turpentine? Edit- not available in the US due to trade agreements.
