Remind me again why Jeff can't just buy a B rank Core to merge his Skills?

WickedlyDesigned

I'm starting to get strong suspicions on how paragons can affect growth. We are being told that unmerged skills top out at C. We are also told that each rank advancement for a skill includes some kind of law. As such I believe that skill merges are based on law compatibility and law accumulation, at least usually. You take separate skills and add their potential for laws together. More skills, more potential, higher cap. The basics. Now we get paragons added. They are being hidden from the public, but they are generally available. I have quite a few problems with them being hidden, but I'll disregard those for now as unrelevant and instead focus on them in their aspect of external sources of law. I believe that they are a way to artificially raise the caps of relevant skills: most people don't merge their uniques, because there's no verified combination that is known to work, due to their unique nature. Meaning that the very skills that make an individual stand apart and give them their signature abilities are among the very first to lag behind the rest of their builds. Adding in paragon cores to overcome this fits too well and is just too neat to ignore. And as for paths? I believe that by nature of them being paths and thus limited in direction, they require either more specialised laws or just more laws in volume, so they need the paragons to advance as well. Narratively, this is going to allow the other characters to stay relevant despite not being on a path. Folds together nice and neat. The problem is that this setup is being spoonfed to the party. I mean, 2 paragon portals, 2 paragons to the 2 most ambitious members? Where are the fire paragons, or the arcane ones that have cores that would fit with all the standard meta abilities that most anyone could have? Why isn't the knowledge of paragons protected in practice? Why aren't others actively hunting them? Why are distractions coming one by one, and shelved so that their complications can come well regulated, instead of all at once? I mean, the guilds are being so very patient right now... Kade didn't get a single unsolicited offer yet... And an A rank team didn't happen to wander into a portal to kidnap him while faking his death. Or anything. No, the current goal is paragon core acquisition, and the current complication is the GC sniffing around Jessie. Everything else is shelved. In timeout. Disregarded.

Tftc. This whole paragon plot is throwing me off to be honest, I was really enjoying the story but it’s starting to be unrealistic to me at least. As other comments mentioned two paragons portals in a short amount of time doesn’t make sense. Shouldn’t the guilds be monopolizing these portals and giving their people the paragon cores. And if paths come from the paragons shouldn’t more than Kade have a path ? Maybe these will be answered later so I will try to be patient but it feels like the story is being pushed in a certain direction rather than it unfolding.

Thanks for the chapter! :-)

Paragons are abnormally stronger, and the information is suppressed by the government. Somehow. Honestly, the complete information block out is probably the most unrealistic thing so far.

I could’ve missed the rationale somewhere, but why aren’t paragons and elemental cores common knowledge? A metallic portal + elemental boss-like monster that drops a core should be something humans picked up on. Or was this a new phenomenon? I must’ve skipped something.
