Updated aerogel link

Amazing video! Loved watching every minute of it. I may have an idea as to the yellow coloring in the hexagonal piece of aerogel. If you pause the video exactly at 33:35, you'll notice that the teflon tape towards the end of the thread is a lot darker than the tape closer to the glass. I bet the color from that tape leached into the liquid CO2 during your second run with the hexagonal piece.

Sodium Silicate is non soluble in alcohol. But I'm told it forms a gel, when mixed with Ethanol. Apparently you can make good boiling chips this way.

Perhaps just dissolve Sodium Silicate in Anhydrous Ethanol / Methanol, and allow the Silica to form as the Supercritical CO2 replaces the solvent? It might remove at least one step?

If Sodium Silicate forms Silicon Dioxide on contact with CO2. Is there a way to expose Sodium Silicate to supercritical CO2 in a direct fashion?

if you ever try making it again, you can try to mold it the way gummy candy is made. They have a bed of starch and press shapes into it, then pour in the candy. The removal from the mould should be very easy

There are two types of science videos I'm personally interested in: big (costly) journeys where someone like your tries to reach a goal. The other ones are videos that give me useful(!) knowledge and teach me methods I absolutely could do myself. Of course my Interest is sparked by the fact that I COULD do it myself even when I know that I won't do it myself. Price, toxiticy and availability (in Europe where I live) are key: "make your own plastic only by shooting pure gold out of an AK47 into Cyanide" does not tingle my DIY spirits... I would watch it though. :)
