Crystal DeFrate

I caught up. :)

Tom Krausse

So, is “Laundry Day” considered an offensive spell? Because I’m thinking paratroopers + Laundry Day would be a nice messy strategy

Andrew Bartlett

Hell yeah! I'd assumed Manson at first (More Jesus-y than Jim Jones) so it took me a second but that's a very cool little detail. Would have been even better if Carl didn't see him interacting with anyone else so that the reader could wonder if it even happened.

I love the warhammer reference! Even if it doesn’t fit the “dungeon crawler” theme it made me smile exactly like everything else in this series! Keep up the excellent work dude!

william brown

I have read the series multiple times and just now started to think, why had Carl not used the size up potion on Samantha? They have been curious since before they started getting the potions and it just feels like something they should do. Also why had Rosetta not said anything about the tattoo kit since she thought Carl was an idiot for not figuring it out?

Matt D

Yeah, if I went back and reloaded chapters every time I made a change, I'd spend all day doing that. It'll eventually show up when I post a pdf or epub. In this particular case, I added a few more back and forths with the Cult Leader totem guy along with more invisible monkeywrenchers, which Carl beats to death with his fists, which eventually fills his patch.

Ilya Taytslin

When you say "repaired", you mean in the book's eventual form? The chapter posted here does not look any different.

Matt D

Ilya is correct. This was a pretty egregious error on my part, and I've had to go back and fix it. The error has since been repaired.

Ilya Taytslin

From "Eye of the Bedlam Bride": "For every creature you kill with a melee attack, the Scavenger’s Daughter patch is charged with the essence of the fallen. Once fully charged, you may transfer this energy to a single melee attack, which will completely drain all the essence. This attack will have varying effects depending on the nature of the essence stored." Tripper is not a melee attack

Douglas Erdman

He used his Tripper skill to set off all the explosive traps that were being strapped to automatons by the other team, causing them to go off & kill a bunch of them.

Daniel Wasserott

Whenever he gets credit for a kill.

Daniel Wasserott

So good. Listened to and read all 6 books multiple times and just finished reading all available book 7 chapters and love it.

Ilya Taytslin

How did Scavenger’s Daughter manage to get full? I don’t think Carl was doing any hand to hand fighting

Corey Pittman

True. They were allowed one war chest of supplies to bring in and it may have had to be in there before the Princess Posse was a problem. Also, like the orc said before, they think of themselves as “real person(s)” and not crawlers so they are less likely to kill themselves for a game.

Dirty Dibbler

Tina needs a donut sized saddle. A cat shooting laser beams from her eyes riding the back of a blood thirsty, tutu/boa wearing dinosaur smashing and chomping mech warriors is a Walmart graphic Tee in the making

Grigorius of Tomsk, Devourer of Pop-Tarts, Victor of Many Battles

Yeah, we'll definitely see some heartbreaking bits about conscripted crawlers being forced to fight Carl's army. :( Not just Lucia Mar but also the poor bastards who started the level near one of the alien armies, or just didn't get the memo about Carl's big recruitment drive. There's gotta be at least a hundred if not more of those poor bastards.

Grigorius of Tomsk, Devourer of Pop-Tarts, Victor of Many Battles

Hmmm, I doubt that. As Carl pointed out in book 6, the AI is still a sadistic homicidal asshole. Likewise, the AI wouldn't protect the aliens if Carl ever decided to use his Doomsday Scenario bomb against them.

Corey Pittman

It is probably an AI thing, like the limit to armor that saved them in the long run. The AI thinks they are “Jumping the Shark” and is trying to nerf them a bit.

FossilWreckers

There's an author I read on RR that I can tell dictates her story from her typos.

Mark McIntosh

I always read the previous Patreon post again as a refresher before reading the new post. I'll have read the whole book at least twice before it's even published

Emmett Stokes

My wife puts on Bridgerton last night, and all I can think is what would Donut think of this blantant Gossip Girl?

J Holmes

70's Death Cult Jesus offering Carl the kool-aid was subtle but hilarious.

Marshmallow

Could they move the saferoom door so it is laying horizontal on the floor and facing towards the ceiling? So if the enemy tries to enter again they have to deal with gravity shifting and also having to climb up and out.

jrue

Has anyone noticed on some updates Matt spells out “book seven” and on others he writes, “book 7” ? I think there is meaning here. No way is that just some random thing. There is a deeper meaning here, I can feel it.

Corey Pittman

As soon as he said Tripper, I started giggling like his attorney talking about “Everybody loves carnage!”

Michael Alpert-Appell

Amen brother.

Michael Alpert-Appell

Every time I get incredibly excited at discovering a new set of chapters released, and read them... They're fucking amazing. Sometimes I laugh hysterically, startling the shit out of my wife. Sometimes I gasp in absolute horror, hands clasped over my mouth. Sometimes I'm sitting here, in my chair, tears forming in my eyes, sad or happy, feeling _something_. Amazing, every time. Edit: Wonder how much experience Carl got for his Tripper-induced nuke. That had to kill dozens of mooks, if not hundreds.

FossilWreckers

I don't know if this is obvious, but I think Lucia Mar is getting Conscripted. I'm betting it's the Orcs!

Mark McIntosh

Whenever new chapters are released I re-read the previous chapters to refresh. I'll have read the whole book twice before it's even published.

Sandboy OC

Did I just read correctly that Carl now has an invisibility cloak?

Sandboy OC

Oh no, how sad for you ^_^

Grigorius of Tomsk, Devourer of Pop-Tarts, Victor of Many Battles

Question: if the bad guys can still do small-size incursions into the castle (which requires a permanent guard duty now), what's to stop them from just rolling in a nuke (or just a giant bomb) with a 0.1-second fuse? Is there some gentlemanly agreement that they want to take Carl and Donut alive for their torture theater, or is there an actual limit in place?

Christine Brown

That surprised me how sad it made me feel that anyone would leave. This book is going to wreck me when they start dying...

Greg Willickers

The thought of my sweet little cat having to become a bloodthirsty warlord to survive makes me so sad. Seeing Donut step into her power and authority is cool, but seeing her need to is terrible.

Cash67

I love this! The action, the suspense, and the insight to how Carl thinks is just amazing. I just can’t wait to see what’s in the 1914 box.

Dylan

Have fun with the reread

Dylan

Not too bad of a cliff hanger, I would have been pissed if it had been right after donut’s call to arms. I would love if we got a few lines on carl trying to find mage. We hear how important it is but don’t get much of carl actually looking Loved the back and forth snipping. Your really making stalled out trench warfare seem cool lol

Katyna Smith

That sentence, "there was something comforting about that specific kind of pain" was a kick in the ass. Wow. Your writing hits me like Rick and Morty. All of a sudden I'm feeling shit in the middle of violence and comedy.

Tyler Vickers

Could Donut cast her hole spell in mid air, like in the shape of a long thin tube that defeats the anti-granade/tech shield/smoke curtain. And then Carl could fire a hoblobber line drive right into the enemy?

BJ

Welp, Carl just vaporized all the brain worms and put a new crater in the middle of their base.

ListenTo100PercentEat

That Cookbook passage from Priestly is incredible and really does a great job of setting the tone for Carl and his mental state. I both can't wait and am dreading when we reach his turn in the former Cookbook author profiles/updates/whatever they should be referred to as that have served as chapter intros. On that subject, given Carl's mantra about remaining unbroken, his place as the leader/face of this movement, both publicly and in secret, and the direction things are going in that will only push Carl even further toward the breaking point, seeing things from the point of view of his brothers and sisters who have received the Cookbook is a phenomenal way to not only show how special Carl is, but also how normal and vulnerable he is. For all that Carl has accomplished, he still has not made it as deep into the dungeon as the majority of the other Cookbook authors that we know the fate of. Those that have returned to fight alongside Carl recognized in him the same spirit and fight that they had, and continue to have, but also something more. The possibility that it could all fail and be for nothing in the grand scheme of things is horrifying. It really speaks to the pressure on Carl to live up to the ideal he has created and others have bought into. Matt, the fact that you can balance all the emotional, large scale, story defining things such as this with everything else that is happening is unreal. From my perspective, you don't ever need to worry about "keeping it compelling." If people are unable to appreciate the importance of Carl's struggle and everything that comes with it, they need to adjust their expectations and mindset. Thanks for continuing to provide such incredible writing.

William Axford

Tina needs massive guns on her back!!!!

David Cline

Dude, There's going to be cliffhangers damn near every chapter. It's the 9th FLOOR!

Matt Gomez

It’s a call back. In book 6 he complained about the AI rambling in the turkey boss description so it threw a tantrum and gave him basically zero info on Sharp Elbows

Matt Gomez

They skip floor 7 at the end of book 5. Book 6 is floor 8

Joseph Harris

Look at Donut out here growing into her Warlord title. Good for her.

Joseph Harris

I knew Tina was going to wreck shop. Lol

Lewke

Loving the chapter pacing! You call these last two updates cliffhangers but that’s only true for us, when the book comes out these chapters are going to flow wonderfully and people won’t be able to put it down. As for Carl, his struggles with war are definitely coming across.

Stephen Greenwood

It would be awesome if you added a "ghost ship" trap, like and in Hobgoblin Riot. Even better if you had an alarm trap that played mudvayne's "not falling" when the Ghost ship trap went off.

BJ

Knowing, intellectually, that it doesn't cost him any time is one thing, experiencing it is another. He is in the middle of a fight and his mind is screaming MOVE, but he's frozen in place, paralyzed, for what feels like seconds is torture.

Grigorius of Tomsk, Devourer of Pop-Tarts, Victor of Many Battles

Amazing update. :) I absolutely loved the AI breaking character and actually *apologizing* for the completely world-breaking Warhammer fusion lol. And huh, this is the first mention of what the crawlers might see on the 10th or 11th floor... Aside from all the gods, of course. Makes me wonder which of Carl's friends will take the 10-floor deal right after this level ends. O_o

Grigorius of Tomsk, Devourer of Pop-Tarts, Victor of Many Battles

True, but even if time stops, those super-long descriptions are still pretty annoying for crawlers, I guess. You're essentially frozen, unable to do anything but think (yay), and it's not like you can mute or fast-forward the AI. :P

Deacon Stoneley

Ahhh gotchu I thought I was making a mistake, looks like ima have to reread from book 1 again 🤦‍♂️

FossilWreckers

They finished 6 and skipped 7 to get to 8.

Deacon Stoneley

Pretty sure this will get ironed out in later "Several of the soldiers around us swept their 8th-floor cards out into air..." pretty sure its 7th floor right? cause of the 8th floor skip???

Patrick Haugen

10/10 Just amazing descriptions of the action as always 🔥

Josh Offsie

I’m very happy with how well these drafts manage to keep clarity in the chaos. It’s hard to write how much is going on at once while letting the reader follow along. too chaotic and we can’t tell what’s happening, too structured and it feels like a sequential DnD turn. bravo.

Suruten

So excited for the new chapters. Great work as always. If it's okay to make a suggestion... (feel free to ignore it as well) in the first paragraph after the cookbook entry, 4th sentence you wrote: "The shields had no time limit, but once cast, they could be hurt with damage, though they were effective against tech-based weapons." would it be okay to suggest writing it as either of the following? "Although the shields had no time limit once cast and were effective against tech-based weapons, their durability could be fully drained after sustaining enough damage." or "Although the shields had no time limit once cast and were effective against tech-based weapons, they could be broken after sustaining enough damage."

Vickie Rashvand

Absolutely loved those chapters! Thank you! I do appreciate the mix of intensity and somber. Can’t wait for the main show!

Ed

"I shook my head, and I stopped myself from uttering a complaint about the extra-long description." --- I disagree here. As was established in the last book, when the AI gives someone an extra-long description, it also bends time so that the person gets extra time to process it. Thus, in this moment of chaos, Carl should be thankful for a long description, since that gives him a minute to think about other stuff.

Brett Campbell

Woooo

Bradley Carrico

My turgidity stat levels up every time I see new chapter notifications. NEW ACHIEVEMENT! ROCK STEADY!!!
