No slave owner has ever deserved mercy, I'm late to this poll and catching up in the story but I look forward to heads on pikes.

Catherine

I think they be better off ransoming them back to their masters in exchange for favours and political capital. That would benefit them more in the long run although how much they could get would depend on how important they are.

Catherine

I think it would be best to ransom them back to their masters after they have signed a confidentiality agreement. If they don’t sign they don’t get ransomed. They could also put them to work for a couple of years before ransoming them. Executing them will have consequences that the Silverseas probably won’t be ready for. At least I don’t think they should be ready for that. I don’t have the impression that they have enough political capital to execute whoever upsets them. I mean know that attempting to enslave the young lord isn’t minor but all the same. I dont think it makes sense to execute people just yet when if the people who sent them take offence I’m pretty sure the Silverseas aren’t capable of protecting themselves and the island against whoever comes. Kai is only 6 and Aleera is 11. The only real fighters are grandpa, the 2 teachers and the bishop and his knight who are loyal first to the church and may not get involved. I mean I could be wrong and they have the political capital and fighters to get away with executing whoever wrongs them, I just don’t think I’ve seen that in the story yet.

Crime slavery with a time limit seems like the best solution.

Carl Mason

More pertinently, what laws affect kidnapping and attempted enslavement of a noble lord (not an heir, but a sitting lord)? We are going to find out, I suspect.

Bettina

I agree - indenture is a beautiful example of the punishment fits the crime or an eye for an eye. And I also quite agree that indenture / debt slavery should have a time limit - e.g. 7 years as in the Old Testament. Having an octogenarian on forced labor simply sounds torturous. Death penality is out for me. I'm against the death penalty in principle, unless you need to remove an uncontrollable threat. The absolute ruler of a small island is very easily able to control all humans with a weaker cultivation level.

Caleb Reusser

Officers die. I would be leary about indenturing someone as that opens the door to something that can be in practice no different than slavery. So put them on a work gang imprisonment set term.

Norbert Fuksz

He can't be soft now or it will be taken as weakness by anybody who learns about it including the nobles to come... either that or use them as bait in the tunnels.

Norbert Fuksz

It's way past the pleasantries stage... these slavers need to die for more than one reason including showing the consequences of attacking their noble house...

Alnatura

Well what law is there for basically enslaving a noble heir?

Carl Mason

Obviously, Kai and his father call a family meeting when they get back to the isle.

Carl Mason

"Oh, Grandfather!" *points ominously* The entire group is disarmed and defeated before they get very far, the only ones able to get anywhere are the high level people, who all fight and die (but, hey, they got somewhere!) and the rest are indentured under usurous terms while the slaves get freed and placed as overseers on the crew. The classers are employed more meaningfully about town.

Dnulho

Some of them die, and the rest are put under some kind of indentured service contract. Kyfe's suggestion for the specifics of that contract sounds interesting.

Considering how the poll go, I say make them have the real serious potential for death, raising that they well and truly fucked up on top of walking themselves into it. Even if its indentured servitors in the end, they gadda feel that that was a really close call.
