Not to mention Elaine still doesn’t know Flora is Kallisto’s kid

Could do with a bit more meat on the bone. All that build up to be dusted off with a brief summary at the end is very dissatisfying.

I think the feeling is amplified because it's creating a large dissonance between the reader and Elaine's experiences. In a large amount of time where Elaine is settling down, becoming familiar with, and spending decades integrating into her job and society and marriage and everything, the readers experience is to spend very short amounts of time jumping from place to place in time and space, feeling less familiar with the surroundings and events that are making up Elaine's life. I guess I'm missing experiencing the details and progression of the story vs suddenly jumping ahead and being given a snippet of what happened but not really an understanding of what got us there before taking off again. The closest analogy I can think of to how its making me feel is like Sitting down to play an MMO that you haven't played through before and immediately buying a character boost to max level. sure you're reaching the end "goal" that way , but you're missing out on all the nuance and details of actually getting to play the game and progress through the story. You're missing out on earning the end result. To me the point of playing the game isn't to end up with a max level character, its to enjoy the experience of playing and making progress over time

TLDR: The frequent time skips and very short story arcs / summarizations are making me feel more and more disconnected from the world as opposed to drawing me into it. I love the overall story of BTDEM, but lately it's pacing has been feeling rushed and not very deep. The combination of frequent large time skips and story arcs that last just a chapter or two is making it feel more like a summary of a story than the story itself. Don't get me wrong, BTDEM is still at the top of my reading list, it's just felt very scattered and sparse on details lately, like we're being told what's happened in very brief glimpses, instead of being shown what's happening overall. It's like driving by two dozen theme parks at top speed and catching glimpses of what's going on inside as you barrel towards some unknown destination hoping that it's worth all the missed opportunity that you zoomed past. but not knowing where you're going, you can only hope and look longingly out the window. I can only assume that we're rushing ahead in time to try to get to a specific year for an event to happen, and I'm hoping once we get there it will go back to more developing story in the moment and less time skipping brief summaries.

Hmm..... Yeah. I guess not taking the time to go through security or the normal entryways, and then commandeering a supposedly-neutral teacher through the use of political allegiance is a bad look, especially because it threatens the School's neutrality right b as things are ramping up for an immortal war. Fiona, the Witch in White, had to do *something* to make it clear this wasn't allowed, even if it was just firing teachers from the nation responsible. She does NOT want her school becoming part of the battleground once the war kicks off. And neutrality is a very fragile protection because it relies on other people's perceptions and willingness to obey the rules. There's plenty of real power at the School, of course. But that doesn't help much if the war is inside the walls.

Thanks for the chapter 😁

Elaine finally getting bit for dropping medicine and biomancy is nifty. Lotsa folks griping about the way the wrap up is presented as a summary, but I am kind of liking the break followed by what is starting to feel like journal entries or field reports. Each of these chapters could certainly be padded out to be fairly satisfying mini arcs but I am liking how this hopping forward in the timeline with vignettes is being laid out.

Damnit Selkie, you could have at least told us whether replacing the clone's conjured matter with living matter got her system access in the end. Don't just gloss over all the interesting details. A clone surviving the original and then becoming the original would have interesting implications. Also, did she get a completely new system or the one of the original? And Flora is the worst goddaughter ever. Elaine finally got her revenge on Vitus by getting his ass fired, too bad she also cost Marcelle her job. Although I can imagine the latter isn't even mad after getting the levels of several decades in one evening, as well as a fantastic achievement. Maybe Exterreri could offer her a job augmenting soldiers with biomancy. Perhaps the new recruits, their Vitality should be low enough for someone like Marcelle to overpower.

Thank you!

heh

Why do we measure time based on the events at the Phoenix Peaks? It wasn’t really THAT eventful iirc
