I thinking the Calamity interlude showed the mindset well. Immortals deciding that the best way to give their people a better chance this time around is to make it as hard as possible for everyone else to rebuild.

SwitchBlaze

Good Chappie. Thank you.

Lijwent

Nah probably way more, like there was mention of a city who just poofed in another dimension to wait out the immortal war, ans while some place will have been utterly destroyed, the places with powerful immortals or without any immortals will be fine

Selkie

I tell my wife there's a chapter of my favorite story out

Selkie

Writing the from the mentor's POV is wild. Like, for surveyor this would be a whole-ass epic, and to Elaine, it's just... 'been here, done this, good luck!'

Shoto

Exactly, we even have the zombie apocalypse happening in Nimer.

Cormac

From Elaine's flight, it seems like there are maybe 100,000 people left. Have I interpreted things correctly?

TroubleFait

So instead of a World War, Pallos had a nuclear apocalypse.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks!

I think this current war must be one of the worst Pallos has faced. A normal immortal war would be when Arachne summoned Elaine to cure the plague that attacked the vampires. And she said she would retaliate by sending some legions. This would be a normal immortal war, so to speak, armies being sent to the battlefield, some high-level elites appearing and facing each other. Many would die, cities would be destroyed, but it would be a gradual process. Due to that elf destroying 8 cities and then that other elf destroying dozens more, the world fell into chaos very quickly, those who survived chose to launch their own city-destroying attacks, and in the end, almost no city was left standing, and few survived.

Robert Nolan

Damn it, you need to stop doing this too me first thing Monday morning. My wife is starting to worry why I come done to breakfast all teary eyed.

Also, people know about the about the pattern and so prepare for both it, and the ones after it, which just makes it worse. It's the Prisoner's Dilemna writ large: everyone knows that the end result is worse for everyone if they prepare for war, but it's the only logical option.

Following the WW1 analogy, the attack by the former slave with portal magic and a relativistic projectile was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. While there might have been opportunities to de-escalate, they were all missed or not in enough interests than the ensuing reactionary violence of vengeance that would occur in rapid cycles until there is too little fuel to burn, and then the survivors have to pick all the pieces back up.

At this point, I think it's fairly safe to say evidence strongly suggests that it's because the original gods really want this to happen every so often and did what they could to ensure it would. Consider that: - The world is pretty meat-grinder-like as a whole when civilization isn't in great shape, and still not all that great from a safety standpoint even when civilization is at a relative high point. - There are tons of powers that can very easily serve as flashpoints, including some that could occur accidentally (e.g. void mages just existing, or someone with a power set like Galdir experimenting without sufficient caution). - Many of the immortal curses introduce such vulnerabilities that they're difficult to survive without defaulting to extremely aggressive offense when threatened. - Mass-murder at genocidal to omnicidal scales (of almost exclusively far weaker beings) is *rewarded* with divine ascension (if you're high-enough level first), with no evidence of any real attempt by the gods to discourage such behavior. - The guardians are effective enough to let the worldwide situation build to an extremely unstable state, but ineffective at stopping escalation when things really kick off. (In fact, given they seem to be purely reactive, that we know their detection methods are possible to get around even when they aren't busy, and have little evidence they're particularly strong for their levels, they really seem very focused on filtering out the least dangerous/competent of the mass murderers.) - We do see a little bit of divine intervention that's beneficial to a select few chosen favorite individuals (and even then, continued life of the mortal in question is explicitly not a particularly high priority in and of itself), but everything else seems to be pretty heavily aligned with transactional or self-serving motivations. Overall, I'd say the evidence strongly suggests that the primary gods setup the world (and ensured subsequent management) with clear intent to prioritize producing the occasional new strong (and usually ruthless) god while minimizing the incidence of relatively weak gods. They really don't care about the vast majority of mortals beyond that they collectively serve their role as fodder for that process.

Ardenn Eriksen

I think it's to create more gods. We've seen through Night that the Big Five like Papillon were derivative and lazy at Creation. So I can easily see them deciding after the first Immortal War ended with a dozen new gods ascending that this is ultimately a good thing for them. A couple thousand years to build up potential then light it up when ready— Boom! New gods!

Olly

The world just contains too many immortals capable of snapping their fingers and destroying a country, that eventually enough of them have a reason to do so. Each individual or group has their own reasons for violence. It starts like World War I, with a single arbitrary incident leading to a series of escalations, helped along by enough elvenoids who either see their personal war as a good/just thing or simply don't care. Once enough skills start flying, everyone begins reacting with their own offensive or defensive measures. So the level of violence rises and the whole world burns.

Benjamin Smith

I guess the plague cleanup just went exactly as Elaine explained it would, and therefore wouldn't be all that entertaining to read. I bet it's extremely interesting to Surveyor, but for Elaine (and the readers) healing a person of deadly poison is just a "for me it was Tuesday" situation.

Specter

I think we're leaning towards time skips a little bit. Cleanup is/was important but how much is the examination of mechanics we've seen lots of times before to the narrative at this point for a background character worth?

Daniel B

I think that little time skips are going to be happening for the next while, probably until civilization starts reconnecting.

Kennyevilmonkey

I guess its being handled.

Drendude

Did we skip a chapter? Or was the plague cleanup that uneventful?

Clinton Walsh

She was the masseuse who was pretending to be Sentinel Dawn for her clients. Elaine ran into her on her way back from the school outside the walls. Elaine made Sunrise cry accidentally and then received an apology massage that was bliss.

Ronny Cook

Sunrise was a prostitute in Remus who used the name to capitalise off Dawn's name and fame. She shows up in Beyond the Wall.

Dalth

Sunrise was a person in Chapter 149, right before the Fomorian War, a prostitute who dressed like a sentinel, legionnaire, or Ranger, to work the streets and make more money by parodying the one woman Sentinel. Elaine got a supposedly wonderful massage from her. Elaine also scared the pants off her by introducing herself as Sentinel Dawn.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Andrew

Thank you!

CringeWorthyStudios

Ah, right, that was a while back. Gods that was a fun mini arc though. 🤣

Anonymous

She was the prostitute that dressed like sentinel dawn

Apollo Above

Like Elaine, I still don't understand the underpinnings of the senseless violence going on.

CringeWorthyStudios

Damn, that hits hard. Who was the ‘Sunrise’ person mentioned after Augustus though? I don’t recognise the name. Thanks for the chapter!

MoonlitShade

Thanky chappy
