A deep dive into TIM BURTON!
🕑 Added 2018-04-16 23:52:38 +0000 UTC AHH!! Finally! After weeks and weeks of work, my first film analysis video is here, and ~*fashionably late*~!!! This version is for patrons only, so hold off on sharing for the moment. I wanted to give you all a chance to enjoy it first (and point out any embarrassing mistakes! typos; sound glitches; etc)PLEASE let me know what you think. I'm still figuring out the format of these videos, so any ideas or thoughts would be awesome. Or just tell me my opinions are wrong (please don't!) And I'm brainstorming a better title. We threw in a temp title just to get this out sooner. But that's definitely changing, so let me know if there's some brilliant title I'm not thinking of. If you can come up with an awesome title, you'll get an extra big thanks in the credits :-D
And definitely make sure I spelled your name right in the credits! Or if you want me to use an alias, just message me with what name you'd prefer. For this one's credits, we included EVERYONE who has donated over the last month, since I haven't been doing live streams or other stuff to thank you for your support. From here on, the Patron tiers for credits will be as they're listed on the main page.
I'll probably release this publicly in a few days, maybe next Monday. Depends on how many corrections/edits I end up needing to make. I'll let you know when we put out the "final" version, so you can share that!

Thank you!! As always you are so kind. Yeah, we are trying to figure out length, but just kind of let this one be long (originally it was FORTY MINUTES!!) And your note about having the definitions on screen makes sense. We'll see what we can move around and change to make it work better.

We went back and forth, trying to decide whether or not to include footage/audio from Trump. At one point we cut to Trump saying "it's just locker room talk!" after a Beetlejuice line. But we thought it'd be a cool experiment to let the audience realize "OH SHIT ALL THIS REFERS TO TRUMP NOW"

Top billing on the Thank You list! Score! Really enjoyed this video. I have always been someone who generally likes but doesn't love Tim Burton films, but this had me looking at them in a new way. I suppose I am a bit guilty of accepting a watered-down version of genuinely dark imagery (the only David Lynch movie I've seen is Eraserhead, which has scared me away from his other films). The Burton movie I watched most recently was the live action Alice in Wonderland, which was stupefyingly dull, and I was wondering how someone like Tim Burton could produce something that left me counting down to the end. I think the ideas you present here really gelled in my mind how he often entirely misses the points of his supposed inspiration in favor of his own subjective preference, which sometimes I'm okay with, but other times just completely loses me. The point about preferring to remember things how you want to rather than how they were also reminds me of things some people say about the Civil War. There was nowhere natural to insert this sentence in that paragraph, but also it's weird how much Burton wants Johnny Depp to bone his wife. Anyway, this was a smart, funny, fascinating video, and I'm happy to be a Patron. Looking forward to the next one!

I love the tie-ins with Ronald Reagan, also missed opportunity for a Trump joke when you were describing him as a hollywood cowboy. "We're still talking about the 80s riiiiiiiight?"

The only thing I might change would be how you're putting the definitions on screen. They were a bit distracting taking up half the page (my instinct was to try and close it because it felt like a pop up ad lol, I'm easily spooked!) The way I've seen it done in other videos is that the presenter will say something like, "The websters dictionary defines X as etc etc etc" without overlaying the text on screen.

I thought this was a lot of fun! Your comment about cartoon beetlejuice banging a child caught me off guard, I had to think about it and was like, "oh, oh no, you're right." The only thing I might suggest would be, what is the possibility of breaking it up into two segments? 26 minutes is pretty long for a single Youtube video, but I do realize that would require filming more (since you would need a start and end cap on each segment). Also if this is cut down from more footage it might allow you to bring more of that back in if it's spread out over a couple of videos that you can release on a longer time table.

I really liked it! I think the only thing is maybe a touch too many comedy elements? But comedy is subjective and maybe I'm soulless or something. I really liked the thought that went into all the points and how accessible it was for someone like me who never really got into Burton and hadn't watched a ton of his stuff.

If you're looking for video feedback I'd suggest reading the Burton quotes more flatly. Adding a dunce character voice to it felt very heavy-handed, especially on the first one about suburban houses. The words themselves are pretty damning on their own.

Ouch. I wasn't expecting Burton to get torn down so much. Maybe I'm an outlier but as a 9 year old Beetlejuice fan in the 80s, I always saw Beetle as the villain. I never picked up the pro establishment messages before, I'm going to need to do some rewatching...
