Daddies, Part 1 -- PATRON UPLOAD

(SPOILERS INCLUDE: Captain America Civil War, Infinity War, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, plus minor spoilers for Thor Ragnarok, Last Jedi, Guardians of the Galaxy 2) This link is for Patrons only, so don't share just yet. We will probably release the public version on Monday or Tuesday (to celebrate upcoming Father's Day!!) after we make whatever tweaks are necessary, and add a thumbnail that's a bit more eye-catching.Let me know what you think! Weβve thought about doing video games but since Iβm not up on much of that lore, itβll be a ways off. Part 2 is more movies (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc) BUT assuming these videos do well, we would love to make it an ongoing series! And for video games, I could collaborate with some video game folks π

I loved it! I've been given a lot to think about, but one thing that kept coming up in my brain was daddies in games (immediately the Bioshock series comes to mind. They're not even subtle about it). Will there be that in part two or is this more daddies in a film kind of thing?

Awesome feedback (and thank you for the typo sighting!)... Yeah, it's not to say a loving parent can't also be abusive, or that an abusive parent can't be at all loving. A more complex, realistic portrayal of parent-child relationships would be great! And we'll get to some of those in pt 2. Plus you correctly guessed we'll touch on Black Panther :-D Glad you enjoyed it, and extra glad it gave you a different perspective!!

Another great video! Again you've forced me to view movies I love in a new way. I think it ought to be said that abusive parents probably often do love their children, but it needs to be equally said that this doesn't excuse or forgive the abuse. I was fortunate enough not to have abusive parents, but I have had deep conversations with quite a few people about their experiences going through it, and they will often say that the abuse was some combination of the parents projecting their mental illness onto their children, translating their own received abuse forward a generation (often with an insufficiently large step in the right direction), and misguidedly attempting to "toughen up" their children for the harsh world, none of which necessarily precludes some deep caring on the abusers' part. I don't think there's anything wrong with humanizing an abuser, as long as you don't portray the abuse as virtuous (hello J.K. Simmons in Whiplash), and also show the lasting damage it does to the victims. GotG 2 - as much as I love that movie - could have done a lot more to directly express the harm Yondu inflicted on Peter, but I think between that movie and some of Infinity War, Thanos was portrayed mostly as appropriately monstrous. Yes, he may have loved Gamora, and maybe even to some extent, she does owe her fighting prowess to his mistreatment of her, but everything she lost to gain those abilities - her childhood, innocence, mental health, trust, etc. - he stole from her, and the movies show consistently that she and Nebula resent him for it. But maybe I'm just a biased Marvel fanboy who fills in the creators' gaps for them (I definitely am). Anyway, as long as we're on Marvel, I hope you talk in the second part about how Black Panther portrays someone evolving away from his father's legacy and learning to acknowledge his father's flaws and become his own person. There is nothing I can say to defend Man of Steel or BvS. Kevin Kentner is the worst sympathetic father figure I've seen in any movie I can think of. Looking forward to Part 2! Save Martha! P.S. In the Chadwick Boseman interview with Stephen Colbert, the caption says "Brining Humanity"

That's a great point. We've kinda got stuff in pt 2 that speaks to that, but making that connection even stronger will be really effective!

Iβm wondering if it might not be a bad idea in part 2 for you to comment on your choice to use the word daddy here. That word definitely suggests a more infantile sort of relationship than dad or father, and you just seem to say daddy so much in the video that you are very much highlighting the word.

Great video. Thinking of all the dead daddy inciting plots, Braveheart, Gangs of New York, Black Panther, Backdraft, The Godfather part 1 and 2, off the top of my head. I defend Tony Stark, just because I love that they basically made a 7 movie ptsd arc, and him wanting to be a dad at the start of infinity is obviously a bad idea.
